Fine book but there are better

Read this book in one sitting. Mr. Hirsch makes many excellent points about house design, especially the feel and flow of a house, symmetry and asymmetry, capturing light, repeating certain motifs, etc. etc. If this is the only book you read prior to designing or remodelling a house, you will be ahead of the game. However, I do think many of the same points are made more effectively, with more extensive illustrations, and in a better organized fashion in two other books: Patterns of Home (Jacobson et al.) and Home by Design (Sarah Susanka). To supplement learning about design principles, a great book to walk you through through nitty gritty details of functionality so that you avoid annoying mistakes like poor placement of light switches, inconvenient door locations, awkward placement of appliances and so forth, try Better House, Better Living, by Myron Ferguson.

Finally! A Decent Book About Home Design!

If you are just starting out in the home design process, you may find this book to be the single most valuable resource available. My wife and I read dozens of home design books and they were all worthless. Seriously! Even the books that get great reviews on Amazon were of no use to us since we are not building an ultra-contemporary eye-sore on the left coast.
Mr. Hirsch's book is a refreshing reminder of what home design is all about. You will read this book and learn something. With that, you'll be able to go to an architect and not sound like a clueless fool. This book will, in some ways, provide an education in design so you can convey a better sense of what you would like in your new home to your designer or architect. I can honestly say that we would be afraid to tell a local architect about any of the other books we have read during our design journey but this book is an exception. It is very well written.
This is a simple book to read but it's suggestions and comments are profound and inspiring. You can't go wrong with this one.

Excellent overview of the architectural process and the art of home design

In the past, I've always thought that hiring an architect to design a traditional residential house is akin to hiring Picasso to paint a family portrait of you, your spouse, and the kids--the odds are you won't like the results and Picasso will just be annoyed. At least that was my impression of the profession gleaned from perusing the pages of Architectural Digest and the like.
Refreshingly, the author warns you away from that sort of architect (unless you prefer Cubist family portraits, of course) and toward architects who are willing to design YOUR HOUSE in your style. To that end, it is vitally important that you are able to communicate as much of your wants, needs, desires and patterns of living as possible to the architect so that he or she can design the house of your dreams. This book does a great job of facilitating that discussion by explaining how architects design houses, starting with the art of how to 'people' a space, to proper massing and symmetry, through all the details involved in site selection, orientation, materials, and floor plan organization, and finally to the depressing realities of budgets and compromises. This is an excellent book to read through once or twice while thinking about the house YOU want to build, before you lock yourself in to a site, designer, floor plan or builder that you will later regret.
I live in a county of houses built primarily in the Contemporary Tract style. After reading this book, I'm far more aware of why I find much of it so repulsive. Everything from brick fireplaces extending from wooden decks, to "houses in holes" below the edge of a road, to single-story houses perched on crawl spaces two stories high (with decks so high and spindly looking I never see them occupied--their owners are probably too terrified to go out on them.) Those mistakes, and many more, are all explained in detail in this book.
Sadly, that is also possibly the greatest weakness of the book. Paying attention to the details costs money and requires craftsmanship, both of which seem to be in short supply these days. Most of the examples in this book focus on high-end, spacious homes obviously built by true custom builders (not the 'customize from our five available plans' so-called custom builders). There isn't much material discussing the issues of small houses, small lots, or finding talent with staying power in the boom/bust flip-me-now world that is the current U.S. real estate market. On a formatting note, it would be nice to see the author create end-of-chapter summaries highlighting the salient points of each chapter, as a quick checklist one could use later during more detailed design discussions. Finally, note that there is little technical depth in this book. You won't find much discussion about the merits of slabs vs. crawl spaces vs. basements, or framing vs. manufactured trusses. The text stays mostly at a higher level of art and functionality, and presumes those construction details will be sorted out by an architect and builder. Even owner-builders, though, should find the principles of art and architecture worth perusing. For that, this book is excellent.
