The Fifth was one of the few units to land intact as a full battalion on Bloody Omaha and played a major role in establishing the Omaha Beachhead. Told from the viewpoint of Headquarters Company Commander John C. Raaen, Jr.-a US Army Captain at the time who eventually rose to the rank of Major General-the story begins a few hours before the invasion launched. It recounts Raaen's trip from the troopship to shore, the assault up the bluffs and off the beach, the battles inland through the hedgerows and villages of Vierville-sur-Mer and St. Pierre du Mont, the thrust to relieve the Ranger force at Pointe du Hoc, and finally the battle at Maisy Battery. An authentic nugget of American history, Intact draws heavily from several period documents written by Raaen during and shortly after the war and details precise locations of events wherever possible. Also included are appendices that contain the After Action reports of the Fifth Rangers and Motor Launch 304-the guideboat that led the Ranger forces assaulting Pointe du Hoc to the wrong objective-along with citations for the award of the Distinguish Service Cross to members of the Fifth Rangers.

About the Author
Major General John C. Raaen Jr., US Army (Ret.) was born at Fort Benning, GA, the son of an Army officer. Raised on army posts, he attended the Military Academy at West Point, and graduated in January 1943. His battalion, the Fifth Ranger Infantry Battalion, landed on Bloody Omaha early on D-Day. After the war, he served until his retirement in May 1979. He currently lives in Central Florida with his wife and family.

A Priceless First-Hand Account of D-Day Action

Intact, by John C. Raaen jr. (Reedy Press, 2012), is a firsthand account of the author's experiences during the D-Day landings of June 6th 1944. This book is a rare gift for any historian who's looking for eyewitness accounts of action during World War Two. I sincerely hope it is cherished by future generations who have the chance to read it.
There's an old dictum, which states that those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it. I believe in this notion. It is just one of many reasons why I try so hard to bring academic historians on to The Politics and Patriotism Show.
It's one thing to chat with a person who is so well read on past historical that they can speak to us about those happenings in great detail. It's another thing entirely to speak with somebody who actively participated in one of history's greatest undertakings.
Major General John C. Raaen jr. (U.S. Army, retired) was born in 1922. He graduated from West Point in 1943. He's a Captain in the 5th Ranger Battalion (Headquarters company) by the summer of 1944, just in time to go ashore during the famous D-Day landings of Operation Overlord.

Intact, A firsthand account of the D-Day invasion from a 5th Rangers Company Commander does more than give us Raaen's version of events. There's an extensive appendix which includes operational orders, orders of battle, unit citations, individual awards, and after action reports.
General Raaen indicated to me during our pre-interview conversation that "most historians aren't aware that many of these documents exist." That was quite the sobering observation. Here we are, so proud to be in the Digital Age, and yet; many important documents of this type are just too hard to find.
This author has done more than preserve his D-Day observations, which are valuable in and of themselves. He's done some badly needed homework for future generations that might not otherwise know about the accomplishments of so many good men.
John Raaen is himself a very accomplished man. He holds degrees in Engineering and Physics. His post war military career is spent helping the U.S. Army to develop many of the technologies we take for granted today.
In the pages of Intact, he goes out of his way to recount the exploits of brave men who never had the chance to tell their own stories in their own words. Raaen plays down his actions in the face of enemy fire. His Silver Star citation documentation appears almost innocuously in the back of this book, as if he were bashful about it.
We are fond of lauding the accomplishments of the World War Two generation. We don't stop to think about the fact that they're almost gone. We assume that somebody somewhere will document their deeds so that we can study them later, if we care to do so.
It was a pleasure to speak with somebody who'd actually been there. Most Americans now associate World War Two and D-Day with the movie Saving Private Ryan. I didn't ask the author what he thought about that movie because he had so much to say about his real-life experience. We could have easily talked for two hours.
Raaen himself is an easy-going man with an agile sense of humor. He writes like he talks. He was ninety years old at the time of our interview, and it was clear to me throughout that he was in full control of his faculties and quite willing to say what was on his mind. Just what you'd expect from somebody who'd seen and done so very much.
The General devotes one whole chapter near the end of his book to the matter of what he sees as historical inaccuracies relating to D-Day and the events that followed. Future historians will debate his opinions for centuries to come. It's hard to argue such fine points with somebody who was actually there.
I recommend Intact as both a good historical read, and as a time capsule that preserves rare first-hand observations and equally rare primary source documentation. Artifacts like this, from any period, are priceless.

The Real Story of Heroism

I've known Gen. Raaen since one of his daughters was a long-time roommate of mine (she is still my friend), and she told me about this book. I hadn't known, until then, that the General had been in D-Day, much less one of its officers. You'll find things in here about D-Day that "even the historians don't know," to paraphrase one of the final chapters. There are photos, maps, commentaries, and all sorts of things. If you want to know D-day from someone who was an integral part of it, this is YOUR book! It's also not too long (but long enough) and easy reading for the eyes. I hope as many people read this as possible, to know why "The Greatest Generation" WAS great. [Pardon my hyperbole, Gen. Raaen, but INTACT deserves it.]

Great Normandy Resource

Very good book on the participation of the 2nd and 5th Rangers on D-Day and the days following. Great geographic reference on locations of actions and landmarks. Very good time line on actions and events. More information on Maisy battery that any other book I have read. Short read but a must for Normandy/D-Day historians.
