Black and white
By Candy Matthews
This book has only black and white photos. For me, this was horrible. The information is very useful but if you don't have a histology/cytology background it will be very difficult to understand what you are looking at in the pictures. Color is very important to histology. Many older books have black and white photos. I suggest one with color. If you are really into pathology or histology I would get this just for the good reading material however.

By R. M. Duenas

Stepping effortlessly from myth to cutting-edge science, Mutants gives a brilliant narrative account of our genetic code and the captivating people whose bodies have revealed it—a French convent girl who found herself changing sex at puberty; children who, echoing Homer’s Cyclops, are born with a single eye in the middle of their foreheads; a village of long-lived Croatian dwarves; one family, whose bodies were entirely covered with hair, was kept at the Burmese royal court for four generations and gave Darwin one of his keenest insights into heredity. This elegant, humane, and engaging book “captures what we know of the development of what makes us human” (Nature).

From Publishers Weekly
In a book that's as disturbing as it is enlightening, as unsettling as it is compelling, Leroi examines all sorts of genetic variability in humans and explains how that variability helps scientists understand the processes associated with human growth and development. Leroi, recipient of a Scientist for the New Century medal from the Royal Institution of Great Britain, demonstrates, in both text and pictures, that an enormous amount can go wrong as humans develop from fertilized eggs and progress toward old age. The missteps can result from genetic or environmental causes, with the latter occasionally responsible for the former. Although the subjects Leroi presents conjoined twins, individuals with cyclopia (a single eye), deformed or missing limbs, abnormal height, supernumerary breasts, an overabundance of body hair, piebald coloring often appear grotesque, he approaches all of his topics and each of his human subjects with great respect. Leroi uses each example to demonstrate the developmental lessons they illustrate: e.g., the role of fibroblast growth factors in the formation of limbs, the pituitary's impact on body size. By explaining that each of us carries hundreds of mutations within us, he asserts that we are not all that different from those who, on first glance, appear very disparate. Similarly, he effectively dismisses the belief that human races are anything more than a convenient social construct, establishing that there is no biological basis for such categorization. While the graphic pictures might deter some, they add immeasurably to the text.

From The New England Journal of Medicine
This book is "about the making of the human body." Armand Leroi, a reader in evolutionary developmental biology at London's Imperial College, thus joins the multitude of writers who are attempting to gratify our narcissistic focus on "the body." His slant is genetic, and his approach is to employ the story of variation, hence the title and subtitle of his book. Leroi takes vignettes from famous historical cases of human "mutants" to provide interest and background for his discussions of the principles of developmental biology (what used to be called "embryology"). The nature of the subject leads him to emphasize genes and morphogenesis, certainly a fascinating area in recent years. Leroi starts his discussion with famous "monsters" in history -- some mythical, some well known, and some obscure, but all quite interesting. Famous examples include cases of conjoined twins, persons with hypertrichosis, and cyclops. The author is at his best in his lively writing regarding the historical context of these cases. He takes up examples of limb malformations, disorders of stature, and cases of intersex (more commonly known as hermaphroditism). The mysteries and medical theorizing of the past are presented in a sensitive voice and are followed by explanations of the current biologic thinking about the processes that appear to underlie these disorders. Leroi's accounts of the human lives touched by these variations are revealing of our historical biases. For example, he illuminates the curious association between ectrodactyly (the lobster-claw syndrome) and the cruel punishment of two religious dissenters in 1685 and shows how the connection reflects the pervasive belief that malformed children are born as retribution for parental transgression. These stories exhibit the wide range of human variation as well as the sometimes astonishing ways in which the affected human beings have managed to fit within their culture and society. In trying to craft scientific explanations that fit the tone and detail of the historical account, the author runs into a few problems. It is always difficult to convey complex ideas about, say, transcription factors and their role in sex determination to a readership that presumably does not have a detailed knowledge of the entire process of transcription. As the biologist Lewis Wolpert has noted, much of modern science is counterintuitive, so Leroi's task is especially daunting. He has attempted much, but it seems to me that his explanations are apt to be more mystifying than edifying to many readers. To the student of current biology, these passages will be a useful summary, but for the hypothetical "general, well-informed" reader, discussions of morphogens, cell receptors, and aromatase are likely to be underappreciated. Although Leroi simplifies and streamlines as best he can, there are some places where this approach can seem to be misleading -- for example, when he asserts early in the book that mutations are "deficiencies in particular genes." To be fair, toward the end of the book, he tries to reverse this rather flat-footed definition of mutation. Sometimes, too, the distinction between genetic causes and nongenetic developmental accidents (e.g., virus infections) is not made sufficiently clear. Read this book for the fascinating tales of human variation and the lives of those affected; the clinical genetics may also be of interest. William C. Summers, M.D., Ph.D.

From Booklist
"We are all mutants," the author writes in this study of the wonder and variety of human genetics. We are all mutants because there is no such thing as genetic perfection. Sure, the human genome has been sequenced and published, but large chunks of it are unreadable. The words don't make sense. The grammar is murky. To find out what this genetic book is all about, we must look at the people who differ from the norm: the mutants. The author explores some common genetic mutations, such as conjoined twins and dwarfism, and some rather more esoteric conditions, like cyclopia (a child is born with a single eye in the center of its head) and sirenomelia ("mermaid's syndrome," where the lower limbs are fused together). He explores the genetic causes for these conditions and relates our contemporary knowledge to history's abundant tales of "monsters" springing from the human womb. It's an enlightening book, but many of its photos, depicting extreme mutations, are deeply unsettling and may be downright scary for squeamish readers. David Pitt

alluding to things Classical is appreciated. Leroi's explanation of the science is well done. The pictures are tasteful (only one or two are actually disturbing). I can't recommend this enough to anyone. It's helped me place this seemingly unreasonable feature of life on this Earth in an appropriate context.

Surprisingly educational
By Alice
I ordered the book more out of curiosity than anything else, assuming it was a book about what cased genetic mutations. What I found was a book that taught me more about genetics than anything else I had read. The book is beautifully written and for such a tediously scientific subject, I enjoyed every page.

If you want a fascinating book on genetics, with information about basic human physiology, you really want to read this book (I learned things like, you can actually see on an xray how much more growing your child can do, because the growth tips get smaller and smaller til around 18 they close. Which hormones account for growth and how they can go wrong. Aging is a mutation, and what causes it).

It is ALMOST, but not quite, as easy to read as a novel. Unlike a novel, you will learn a lot...about science, genetics and humanity.

not just another book with pictures of 'freaks'
By Lizardhaven
my family (the family i raised, not my parents) is one that always got every book we could find on circus 'freaks' and human anomalies. why? i am not sure, but in recent years as i have tried to work out the genetics of giants and bigfoot, etc, i have constantly found perhaps the only information available about the population genetics of the rarer pockets of human variety.

while this book has the familiar cover with drawings of the skeletons of mutated humans, the author has done what the older books could never do-tell what mutation on the DNA has caused the problem. it is generally a mutation that occurs within the first cell divisions of a developing fetus.

his chapter on gender presents cases of children raised as female who at puberty suddenly become male. he relates the histories of a young french girl named Marie who lept over a style and had a penis fall out.

several tribes in the world have an abnormally high incidence of this occurring. when such a child is born, they raise it first as a girl, understanding that at puberty it will become a boy.

the author discusses the spotted hyena which made the defect into a functioning population with some rather gnarly nasty bits.

if you are a person who wants to know about this sort of thing, i do not think there is another book that offers what this one does.

An Interesting, but Hard Text
By A Customer
The Struggle for the American Curriculum is a historical exploration of the changes that occurred in American education. It deals with reforms and the philosophies with gave curriculum its shape. In this book, Herbert M. Kliebard seeks to present a fair and balanced recount of the people and events, who and which fashioned the course of education during first fifty or so years of the twentieth century. In many ways, it is Kliebard's "search for progressive education."
The Struggle for the American Curriculum is a historical overview of pretty much the first fifty years of curriculum formation and philosophy in the 1900s. There are two aspects worth highlighting about this book. One is its comprehensive historical account of the development of curriculum theory and the other is Kliebard's special attention to "progressive education."
The historical overview is very comprehensive as mentioned before. Every major "player" of curriculum and education theory is explored and discussed. For instance, John Dewey is significantly and appropriately studied. His curriculum and its impact is given its full due. Not only is Dewey examined, but also Eliot, the Committee of Ten, and so forth. This book also shows how different movements and reforms, such as social Meliorism and vocationalism, took shape, reached their peaks, and eventually took its place in the educational curricular mosaic.
Yet, most interesting is Kliebard's last chapter on "progressive education." This seems to be his own interpretation in the curriculum debate. The author cites Cremin in defining "progressive education." It is expanding schooling to health and occupational competence, the application of scientific research for teaching purposes, and customizing instruction for the different types of students. Yet, this is only a definition. Kliebard is interested in "cleaning up" what progressive education is. He is keenly aware of the struggle for each philosophy and theory to become the definition. It is the subject of his book and the struggle which continues today.
Overall, Kliebard's book is a very tedious work that is very hard to get into. The way he portrays the evolution of curricular thought is very detailed and hard to follow for a beginning student of curriculum design. Kliebard does not make good use of primary sources. One may wish that he provided more samples of the original work of figures such as Dewey. There are no tables, charts, or diagrams to help comprehend the various views and movements. In this way, the book is somewhat hard to follow. This is the overall weakness.
Yet, Kliebard does a fine job in presenting all the views, movements, and people who impacted curriculum design. His attention to detail is admirable and helps a beginner become acquainted with the humanists, child-study people, the social efficiency educators, and social meliorists. Indeed, this book is very helpful in this fashion.
Once can also appreciate Kliebard's fair treatment of all the views and influential figures of curriculum. In fact, it is not apparent which side he takes. He raises the strengths and weaknesses of each viewpoint in an equal manner. Therefore, he depicts the "struggle" for the American curriculum in a very succinct fashion. Kliebard does an admirable job in representing the facts in a straightforward and seemingly unbiased manner.

A Neutral, Thorough, Political History
By Eric Berglund
I chose Kleibard's book as my first to read on the topics of History of Education, and History of Curriculum Development, and I'm glad I did. He concentrates on a key period of American education history (1893-1958), and begins by describing several competing interest groups: 1) the "humanists", who believe that the traditional academic curriculum provides great value, 2) the "developmentalists", who believe elementary and high school curriculum should be driven by the interests of the students (as adults understand those interests through scientific study), 3) the "social efficiency" group, who believe that time in the classroom is precious and needs to be focused on what students will need in their adult lives, and 4) the "social ameliorists", who think that students should be taught to challenge the flaws of society in order to improve it. All but the humanists identified themselves as part of the "progressive education" movement. (In fact, even some of the humanists claimed the "progressive" mantle.) Each group is well aware of the importance of schooling, as high school enrollment skyrockets, and waves of immigration add to the diversity of the student population.

Kleibard then leads us through the period, showing how those four groups battled for influence, at times combining with each other and at other times clashing. Their efforts led to the introduction of industrial and vocational education in the schools, experiments that based schooling around projects, attempts to eliminate some subjects (most successfully with Latin and ancient history) and merge others (partially successfully with the creation of English, Social Studies, and Biology as combinations of different subspecialties), and later, the introduction of "life adjustment" classes ("Katie Goes on a Date") in the early 1950s.

I found the overall theme of the four contending groups to be an easy way to approach the material, and when I read more in the future, I look forward to seeing whether this theme holds up. Kleibard tries hard to be objective about the actual value of these philosophies--perhaps too much so. As one reviewer mentions, the book could perhaps have used tables that compare them more explicitly. I found myself wondering whether he avoided that analysis to keep the book to a reasonable length, to avoid favoritism, or even because the groups themselves weren't as coherent as his narrative needs them to be.

Since he's not picking favorites, his book becomes a story of the horse race between the various contenders. (Is it spoiling the ending to say that the humanists and social efficiency folks come out on top--at least at the end of this period?) For someone like me, looking for an overall narrative that can put future reading in context, Kleibard's book seems to lay a solid foundation.

(P.S. There's a running theme where John Dewey attempts to split the difference between the various groups, telling everyone they've got it slightly wrong, redefining terms almost to the point of confusion, and generally sitting above the fray, maintaining a towering reputation while not really effecting much change. Kleibard comes across as frustrated with Dewey, wishing that he'd have taken the leadership role that others seemed to want to give him.)

Good Overall Writing Book for Beginners
By Conny
Title: Report Writing: A Survival Guide
Authors: Joyce Kupsh and Rhonda Rhodes
Publisher: Xlibris
ISBN: 978-1-4500-6892-5

“Anyone can write a report. The key is to write a report that people want to read. Developing an effective writing style requires knowledge and practice,” Joyce Kupsh and Rhonda Rhodes write in their book, Report Writing: A Survival Guide.

This one hundred and thirty-four page paperback targets those interested in writing reports, proposals, documents, and other written works more professionally. After acknowledgments and an introduction, the book is divided into seven chapters, ending with checklists and an index.

This thin compilation gleans a plethora of information to make it easier when writing. Starting the first chapter on the purpose of the writing, over thirteen types of reports are briefly explained. The different format styles are offered as well as the parts of a standard report.

The second chapter contains six pages, explaining how to start the writing process through planning, researching, and outlining. The following section discusses referencing and citing sources while the fourth chapter includes writing with objectivity, conciseness, coherence, and tone.

The next two chapters are more detailed, offering tips on polishing and producing the report. Some topics include rules on abbreviations, capitalization, and punctuation along with traditional fonts and layouts to use. Although the examples are simple and to the point, the rules and nuances are generalizations compared to popular in-depth manuals on proper writing applications.

An important facet of the book that many writers ignore is the final chapter on finishing the written project by editing substance, style, and consistency. Some proofreading tips include reading out loud or reading each line backward to find errors.

The checklists at the back of the book may be helpful for novice writers as they offer chapter-by-chapter charts to consider when writing a report. Although some may find them tedious, they are good reminders to recheck, rewrite, or rethink when writing.

This guide is beneficial mostly to the beginner writer who needs a quick resource guide. Some experienced writers may collect ideas from its contents, but they may already be relying on other more comprehensive reference manuals.

This reviewer hopes she has written an adequate report according to the writers’ guidelines.

Professor Emerita Kupsh has published books and articles while also conducting workshops and seminars in several countries. Rhodes, a Professor of Technology, researches, publishes, and presents worldwide also.

Thanks to Bookpleasures for furnishing this complimentary book in exchange for a review based on the reader’s honest opinions.
