Great resource!

I am a huge fan of Angela Watson and the The Cornerstone: Classroom Management That Makes Teaching More Effective, Efficient, and Enjoyable. I think I stumbled upon her site, back when she was Ms. Powell, probably the year I started my first real field assignment for earning my teaching certification [2005]. I've been with her ever since.

When The Cornerstone was published, I jumped right in. I think that I am so drawn to Angela's work because she's been there. She's worked in the inner city and she knows exactly what my job is like every day. (Because sorry but if you HAVEN'T worked in the inner city, you really just don't get the realities -- it isn't 100% the same as working in the 'burbs.) Additionally, her work is written in a tone where you kind of feel like you're chatting with a friend. She isn't judgmental, she's realistic. She sets the standard that it is okay to not be perfect because no one is and then offers what has worked for her.

When I heard that she was publishing her second book, Awakened, I knew I had to have it. Once I read the book description and everything, I really knew I had to have it. Was it possible that one little book could be the answer to it all? Really? [Let's face it, no one single book, no matter how fab the author is will solve the answer to everything...but this one covers a lot and is well done!] I took my sweet time reading this book as well because I really wanted to absorb it and process everything I was reading. Very rarely do I take this long to read a book of this nature but I gave myself two full weeks to read it and I do feel like when I put it aside and let myself process what I'd read for a day or two before going back to the book, that I was able to get more out of it.

The book is relatively short at 208 pages, but this length makes sure the text is concise and to the point. There are three parts: Setting the Foundation for a Healthy Mind; Breaking Free of Destructive Habits and Cultivating a Positive Frame of Reference. Each part will be discussed in turn.

Part One: Setting the Foundation for a Healthy Mind

To start with, Angela offers insight into her own life and describes how she used to be that Negative Nellie. This honesty, from the get-go, provides the reader with the notion that this is not just a book written by anyone. Rather, it is written by someone who has been there, done that and wants to share this knowledge to help other educators. It is very nicely done since it immediately pulls you in (even moreso if you realize that you are the same kind of person that Angela used to be).

This section includes a lot of research to back up what Angela is describing. Again, clearly this is not just the ramblings of a random person who published a book. It is the thoughtful synthesis of information through one educator's eyes who really wants to share this knowledge and new found way of thinking with others.

The best part of this section, to me, is the strategy section. Angela talks about four key strategies to help you set the foundation for a healthy mind but also to set you up to prepare for what comes in the second section of the book. The strategies are DDSS: dismiss, distract, reject, replace. As she goes on to explore these strategies in detail for the reader, she provides many examples and scenarios where you can see how to apply the strategies in your teaching life.

Part Two: Breaking Free of Destructive Habits

In Part Two, Angela explores 10 Destructive Habits that teachers often put upon themselves. From thinking negatively to rehashing events over and over to being presumptuous, Angela carefully explores habits that many teachers probably don't even realize they have.

Each habit has its own chapter. Each chapter goes in-depth to explore the habit and provide examples and scenarios where these habits come into play. I saw myself in a lot of these scenarios and habits. In the past year or so, I have been on a quest to be more positive and only deal with what I can deal with, and for some of these sections, I can thankfully say I am no longer in the midst of that habit. However, there are also many areas that I am still working on. This section is one that will end up covered in sticky note flags as I review and reflect on how I want to improve myself.

Part Three: Cultivating a Positive Frame of Reference

The last section of the book really ties everything together. Each chapter in this section really shows you how to examine the habits of mind that you currently have. Beginning with looking at your own unrealistic expectations and ending with the fact that no one can do EVERYTHING right, this section really provides you with an inside glimpse at how our own negative self-talk puts us in the position to be...well, negative. I particularly enjoyed the sections about how to make yourself difficult to offend and practicing forgiveness even if you want to be upset.

I found this to be especially true and helpful because, in general, people tend to remain upset and offended by things that in the long run, really just don't matter. It shouldn't matter that yesterday someone did XYZ. What matters is, you take what you find useful from whatever the situation is and let go of the rest so you don't drive yourself insane.

Angela ends the book with a chapter dedicated to what the self-talk of an Awakened teacher might sound like. She definitely hit the mark on the little things that we let get us down in our day-to-day teaching.

Overall I would highly recommend this book because it's powerful. Realizing that yes, YOU, have control over how YOU feel and only how YOU feel, is pretty amazing. You can't control anyone else's thoughts or reactions, but you can control your own. And that is pretty awesome.

If you don't have this book....PLEASE do yourself a favor and go buy it. You won't be disappointed.

Consider it an Investment for a Healthier Mindset

This is one of the most useful and inspirational books I have ever read--for a teacher, by a teacher. In a profession where everything seems wrong, and nothing seems right, Angela Watson provides a valuable perspective on the damaging thought process behind our negativity. She breaks down common distortive thinking patterns, and provides excellent strategies for combatting those repitituous, yet unproductive thoughts we so often have.
Watson provides the mental tools and strategies needed to cultivate a positive mindset and attitude; a positive mindset that is undoubtedly healthier, more productive, and of greater benefit to you and your students.

Everything about this book is extremely motivating. It was so empowering to be reminded that I am in control of the mindset I approach this profession with, and that I can actually choose to enjoy my experience everyday, no matter what challenges surface! (Who knew?) I'm looking forward to starting a new school year and to creating a new and positive experience for myself using the strategies from this book.
What I loved the most about this book is that Watson provided specific examples of negative thought patterns and positive strategies using the events and situations we as teachers encounter every year. This makes the strategies in her book easier to analyze and apply.

I plan on recommending this book to family, friends, and colleagues. It's a small investment for a much greater outcome: a peace of mind, and a healthier you!

Realistic and motivating!

I read Angela Watson's book, Awakened, when I was feeling frustrated and unmotivated about my career as a Teacher in an impoverished school with an inharmonious staff. Watson doesn't play the Mary Sunshine role; she's realistic about the struggles that teachers have in the current state of education. In turn, she gives very practical and do-able advice that allows readers to connect the material to their reality and give their outlook a tune-up.

I'm a Christian, so I appreciated Watson's inclusion of her faith. However, non-religious/non-Christians most likely won't find this distracting or overbearing.

This is definitely one of the best books I've read.

About the Author
J. Preston Eby was born into a Mennonite family in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. While still a toddler his parents received the baptism in the Holy Spirit through the witness of some Pentecostal brethren in the area. They were led of the Lord to sell their business and move to Alabama to do missionary work. In his twelfth year Preston was filled with the Spirit – and in that same year the Holy Spirit sovereignly unfolded to his understanding the wonderful truth of the reconciliation of all things and all men unto God. No one else around him – in family or church associations – embraced this revelation. Through those early years he kept this truth to himself and pondered it in his heart. Later he came into contact with, and was touched by, a mighty move of the Spirit known as the "Latter Rain", with emphasis on the body of Christ, gifts of the Spirit, laying on of hands, impartation, five-fold ministry, prophetic ministry, spiritual worship, the kingdom of God, and going on to perfection, unto fullness of sonship to God. The Lord pressed him into a deeper walk with Him, intensifying within his heart the truths of sonship and the kingdom of God, already planted within as seed through the visitation of the Lord as Latter Rain. Along the way he became associated with brother Gerald Derstine and The Gospel Crusade in Sarasota, Florida, serving as an associate minister with him for eight years, first co-pastoring and later pastoring the Revival Tabernacle in that city. His wife Lorain and he, with their family, were on the mission field in Latin America for a total of five years, with ministry in several other areas as well. For seven years, following this, he was an elder in a fellowship of believers in El Paso, Texas where they witnessed a precious move of the Spirit and a body of saints flowing together in the liberty and life of the Spirit. Eventually the Lord led him into a full-time writing ministry directed to those who are called and chosen as elect of God to grow up into the full stature of Jesus Christ as sons of God

What fantastic insight God has given him through the Holy Spirit.
I take my kindle every where and love to just read a chapter of this and then let it sink in.

Used this for a homeschool class.

I used this book with eight home school kids in high school grades. Though it has plenty of good arguments, I particularly liked the structure provided by the chapter designations: "Thinking Like A Christian About History", "Thinking Like A Christian About Law", "Thinking Like A Christian About Government", "Thinking Like A Christian About Economics." The photos in the book and the accompanying video are now quite dated due to clothing styles. I think the book was replaced rather than updated.

The non-Christian believer will gain understanding into how Christians might look at the world.

The book also contains a CD full of age-appropriate lesson plans. This resource alone is worth the price of the book. Each chapter also contains a bibliography for further study.

With regard to these last characteristics, De Humani Corporis Fabrica may also be regarded as the first modern book.
It encompasses the seven following parts, Vesalius introduced as books, all written in Latin:

4: The Nerves.
5: The Organs of Nutrition and Generation.
6: The Heart and Associated Organs.
7: The Brain.

These books are followed by a short Errata post Libri Impressionem, then by a considerable index of 46 pages. The revised edition of De Humani Corporis Fabrica has 877 pages, against 714 for the first, printed in 1543. The original copy that has been used for the printing of this facsimile is one among the best preserved, with no missing page, no tear and no other damage whatsoever. All of its reproduced pages are as clean as those of a recent used book.

One more particularity of this book was the huge cost of its making, which makes it today a very rare piece of historical value whose original printings are currently sold in auctions for sums in excess of one million dollars. There are only 143 known surviving copies of De Humani Corporis Fabrica. That’s why this facsimile is a highly desired collectible for any physician.

Jeremy McCarter wrote cultural criticism for New York magazine and Newsweek before spending five years on the artistic staff of the Public Theater, where he created, directed, and produced the Public Forum series. He served on the jury of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and is writing a book about young American radicals during World War One. He lives in Chicago.

Lin-Manuel Miranda (Book, Music, and Lyrics/Alexander Hamilton) is the Tony and Grammy award-winning composer-lyricist-star of Broadway's In the Heights--winner of four 2008 Tony Awards including Best Musical, Best Orchestrations, and Best Choreography with Miranda receiving the award for Best Score. Additionally, he is the co-composer and co-lyricist of Broadway's Tony-nominated Bring It On: The Musical and provided Spanish translations for the 2009 Broadway revival of West Side Story. Miranda, along with Tom Kitt, won the 2014 Creative Arts Emmy for Best Original Music and Lyrics for their work on the 67th Annual Tony Awards. In 2015, Miranda was named as a Fellow of the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. He lives with his family in New York City.

How lucky we are to be alive right now

Let's just accept it...when Lin-Manuel Miranda does something, he does it right, all the way, and maybe better than anyone else.

I'm fortunate enough to have seen "Hamilton" twice. I've read the Chernow biography, listened to the cast recording non-stop (ha) since September, and been an avid follower of Lin's tweets, Facebook posts, interviews, #Ham4Ham shows, and Genius annotations. I've been a musical theatre geek for five decades and have never felt this excitement about any show (with the possible exception of A Chorus Line). So when I heard months ago that Lin and former New York magazine drama critic Jeremy McCarter were putting together a book about the creation of "Hamilton," I pre-ordered my copy and started counting the days. Now it's here, and.... wow. Just wow.

Given the show's deserved status as a cultural phenomenon that will be playing to sold-out houses for years, it would have been easy to just throw together a "behind-the-scenes" book with a few interviews, toss in some publicity stills, and have a guaranteed best-seller. This "Hamiltome" couldn't be further from that. Among other delights, it includes: the full libretto of this sung-through (and rapped-through) show, with extensive annotations from LMM that give new insights, meaning, and historical context to the words that you might already know by heart; more than 30 essays about the cast members, the production team, the creative process, and the facts of Hamilton's life; copies of relevant historical documents referenced in the show; pages from LMM's notebooks with early drafts and outlines; and a stunningly beautiful array of production photographs, cast portraits, and backstage candids. And all of this is thoughtfully organized and packaged in a beautifully bound volume with ivory deckle-edged paper - a book like books used to be. (Trust me, this is one book you don't want to read on Kindle; it's actually a sensory experience to hold it and turn the pages.)

As McCarter notes in the Introduction, the title "Hamilton - The Revolution" has two meanings. There is the American Revolution that is brought to life in this show, and there is the revolution of the show itself - "a musical that changes the way that Broadway sounds, that alters who gets to tell the story of our founding, that lets us glimpse the new, more diverse America rushing our way." Do what you can to see "Hamilton," either on Broadway or when it comes to your town. It's unlike anything else. Until then, this book and the original cast recording will get you as close as possible to an orchestra seat at the Richard Rodgers Theatre.

A stunning creation, but I knew that before I even saw it...

This book is a thing of beauty! I ordered it early and it - literally - just arrived at my front door. Giddy with excitement, I pulled back the packaging tab and inside was this glorious tome. The design is exquisite, the words flow as beautifully as the pictures from page to page: lyrics, insights and anecdotes galore - nothing has been overlooked. To be truthful, I came back to Amazon to order another as a gift, but there don't seem to be any available. So glad I ordered early! Looking forward to enveloping myself in this Hamilton word and pictures story, that is until I actually get to see the show... A girl can dream :-)

Edited to add: and the dream is almost a reality... Used this gorgeous book to deliver surprise tickets to my niece who turned 18 today. I'm in New York and tonight's the night! AND, Miranda wins the Pulitzer on the same day. It's been a bit of a day!!!

A textbook you can use

For professors who are thinking of using this book, as a student I felt it engaged me immensely. For students who are contemplating shelling out the $$ for the book, I don't quite know what to tell you. The book is very easy to read, lots of colorful pictures, not just dry text. Each chapter starts off with a semi-personal story about the topic at hand. My teacher didn't use it that often for work but I found it helpful to support what I was learning in class. Great reference. Human Genetics is a very interesting topic and can get any lay person to talk about their views on what kind of world they want to see.

Not recommended for most

I suspect a lot of the five star reviews are from friends of the author because frankly this book is principally an advertisement for his expensive seminars and/or DVD sets. It does not instruct the reader on how to survive the first 5 seconds period. What it does do beyond advertising is reinforce repeatedly that all the martial arts training in the world won't work without the right mindset or intention when applying it. This is absolutely correct, but this alone doesn't instruct the reader on how to survive the first 5 seconds of violence encounter.

I suspect the author's seminar's and DVDs that actually present the techniques needed to survive a violent encounter are valid, but you won't find them in this book. Fortunately I saw this while searching for another book in the library and read through it in an hour and I'm glad I didn't pay for it. I recommend going to the author's blog and reviewing it. You can get the same information for free and then you can decide if you want to attend the seminar or buy the DVDs.

Sounds Good, BUT...

This book is okay if you are a complete beginner in the world of RBSD (reality based self defense). I can imagine that it might contain some eye opening matrial for someone who has never considered the subject.

However, Tim Larkin presents basic, common sense ideas as if they are THE TRUTH TM, property of Tim Larkin and TFT. As another reviewer said, this book is essentially a 200 page advertisement to study his system (TFT - Target Focus Training).

The basic premise of this book, and Larkin's system, is that real self defense is based on injuring your attacker. This is a welcome insight, and one that is often overlooked in TMA (traditional martial arts). It bears repeating; the answer to a violent situation is to committ violence on your attacker, and violence is not pretty or clean - it is unpleaseant business. Alright, so this is a welcome piece of information, but does it require a $[...] book? How about a $500 DVD course? That is what Tim Larkin is trying to sell.

The real scam starts to become clear when one looks at the nuts and bolts of Larkin's material. So how do you cause an injury on an attacker? You strike vulnerable areas of his anatomy with lots of force. REALLY? You mean I should be trying to hit the eyes, troat, groin, ears and neck??? (Once again, if this IS news to you, you could probably benfit from this book - but there are scores of cheaper books you could benefit from just as much.)

Next, Tim Larkin teaches you to strike by stepping your body weight into a shot... as if this too were HIS discovery. Yes, you should strike with your body weight, and the best way to do this is to step into you strike (dropstep). Jack Dempsey said as much in Championship Fighting in the early 1900's - we didn't need to pay Tim Larkin to tell us this, did we?

As a martial artist, my biggest problem with Larkin's system is its coreographed approach to training. "You hit your attacker with this strike and he will react in this way, giving you this target." Yes, some physical responses are reflexive, but looking at a fight this way completely ignores the reality that fights are ballistic experiences; they happen, more often than not, at "ramming speed." This is another area where Larkin falls short. In his system he demands that you practice slowly because otherwise it is too dangerous. All I can say is that this is the oldest "carney trick" out there in the world of martial arts. If something doesn't work at 100% speed agasint a committed attacker who is moving however he wants and doesn't know how he is "supposed" to react, it doesn't work. And if you have never practiced a technique at 100% speed, the chances of you being able to use it in a panic situation are exceedingly slim.

So, that's my critique. It went a bit beyond the scope of the book and talked about Tim Larkin's system as well. The reason I did this is because, as other's have said, this book is basically a promotional tool for Larkin's system.

If you are new to RBSD and looking for a good place to start I would recommend the following books:

Gavin DeBecker - The Gift of Fear
Geoff Thompson - Dead or Alive

And remember, you don't have to pay some "expert" a mint in order to learn his super secret system in order to learn how to defend yourself. There is no "TRUTH, TM."

Philosophy - no How To

I was disappointed that the book did not live up to the title "How to SURVIVE" the Most Critical 5 Seconds of Your Life. To me it was just a long internet type teaser to purchase more products (courses and DVDs) Very little actual practical application was in the book. It definitely was not what I expected. I expected a book detailing methods to use to Survive the most critical five seconds of my life. I would not recommend it if you are looking for practical ways to defend yourself. If you are looking for an overview on the psychology of violence and the ways different social elements view and use it-this book is for you.

Minqi Li teaches economics at University of Utah and has also taught political science at York University, Canada. He turned from an advocate of free market principles into a Marxist and was a political prisoner in China between 1990 and 1992.

I had hoped this would be a hopeful book somehow laying out a convincing argument that China's rise will eclipse the disintegrating international capitalist economy and usher in a new world order focused on meeting human needs in an environmentally sustainable manner. Sadly, that is not this book's argument.

"Chinese socialism was the historical product of a great revolution, which was based on the broad mobilization and support of the workers and peasants comprising the great majority of the population. As a result, it would necessarily reflect the interests and aspirations of ordinary working people. On the other hand, China remained a part of the capitalist world-economy, and was under constant and instance pressure of military and economic competition against other big powers. To mobilize resources for capital accumulation, surplus product had to be extracted from the workers and peasants and concentrated in the hands of the state. This in turn created opportunities for the bureaucratic and technocratic elites to make use of their control over the surplus product to advance their individual power and interests rather than the collective interest of the working people. This was the basic historical contradiction that confronted Chinese socialism as well as other socialist states in the twentieth century."

The author, Minqi Li, was a member of the student dissident movement of the 80s in China. He describes the milieu during which he studied neoclassical economics at Beijing University: "The 1980s was a decade of political and intellectual excitement in China. Despite some half-hearted official restrictions, large sections of the Chinese intelligentsia were politically active and were able to push for successive waves of the so-called 'emancipation of ideas' (jiefang sixiang). The intellectual critique of the already existing Chinese socialism at first took place largely within a Marxist discourse. Dissident intellectuals called for more democracy without questioning the legitimacy of the Chinese Revolution or the economic institutions of socialism.

After 1985, however, economic reform moved increasingly in the direction of the free market. Corruption increased and many among the bureaucratic elites became the earliest big capitalists. Meanwhile, among the intellectuals, there was a sharp turn to the right... The politically active intellectuals no longer borrowed discourse from Marxism. Instead, western classical liberalism and neoliberal economics, as represented by Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman, had become the new, fashionable ideology."

A turn towards neoliberalism had, by the 1980s, been made possible by decades of Maoist development policy, which had developed "the necessary industrial and technological infrastructure [allowing China to] become a major player in the global capitalist economy." Li does a good job explaining the capitalist world-system, according to Immanuel Wallerstein's formulation, with its separation into core, semi-peripheral and peripheral states. The international division of labor has core states, like the U.S. and Japan, performing cutting-edge production requiring massive investment and organization, and which offer the greatest profit margins; the semi-peripheral states, like South Korea and most recently China, performing second-generation production that was cutting edge decades ago but which still offer substantial profits; and the peripheral states, like Angola and Bangladesh, which perform low value-added production like raw material exports and low-tech manufacturing.

Li argues that China's move from peripheral to semi-peripheral status (as China now produces all sorts of high- and low-tech products for the core states) signals trouble for the capitalist world-system: "the current 'rise of China' as well as the 'rise of India,' could be the signal that the capitalist world-economy is calling upon its last strategic reserves (such as China, India, the remaining resources, and the remaining space for pollution) to make one more attempt to jump-start global accumulation... The current global development is likely to suggest that several secular trends, which result from the inherent laws of motion of the existing world-system, are now reaching their historical limits."

Why? Because the capitalist world-system relies on strategic reserves of labor that can be called upon when existing labor forces begin to successfully fight for higher wages. Since the system needs high profit margins to reproduce itself via investment, and since high wages put pressure on profit margins, the capitalist world-system needs countries like China and India to turn to for their cheap labor forces once wage costs, or lack of effective demand (in other words, low wages that reduce a market's buying power) begin to threaten profitability. But the very process of exploiting labor in China - building factories and creating an urban working class, moving China from peripheral to semi-peripheral status - threatens to undermine the ability to exploit such labor in the future. Li explains: "To the extent that the non-core states have lower levels of proletarianization, workers tend to be less educated, less effectively organized, and under constant pressure to compete against a large rural reserve army [of laborers]. The workers in these states, therefore, tend to have much lower bargaining power and receive significantly lower real wages. *The low real wages in the periphery and semi-periphery make it possible for the world surplus value to be concentrated in the core and help to keep down system-wide wage costs*. However, in the long run, the development of the capitalist world-economy has been associated with the progressive urbanization of the labor force. After some initial disorientation, urbanized workers have invariably struggled for higher degrees of organization and extension of their economic, social and political rights. Their struggles have led to growing degrees of proletarianization within the capitalist world economy." (emphasis added)

This spells trouble for the world-system, since as production costs increase in China as workers successfully fight for higher wages, there will be few alternative states for producers to turn to for cheap, educated labor and efficient infrastructure. Also, China's ever-increasing contribution to environmental degradation threatens to undermine the world economy through destruction of the natural environment of which it is a part.

Li's analysis of economic - and, more depressingly, ecological trends - leads to the following conclusion: "With the decline of the US hegemony (reflected by its ever-declining ability and willingness to pursue the system's long-term, common interest), no other state is in a position to replace the US and provide effective leadership for the system. China and every other potential hegemonic candidate all suffer from insurmountable contradictions and weaknesses. None has the ability to offer 'system-level solutions' to 'system-level problems.' Either the existing world-system has exhausted its historical space for potential new leadership and therefore is doomed to systemic disintegration, or the new leadership will have to assume the form of an alliance of multiple continent-sized states, which will then become a world-government and therefore bring the existing world-system to an end.

The capitalist world-economy rests upon the ceaseless expansion of material production and consumption, which is fundamentally incompatible with the requirements of ecological sustainability. Depletion of material resources and pollution of the earth's ecological system have now risen to the point that the ecological system is on the verge of collapse and the future survival of humanity and human civilization is at stake.

To summarize, multiple economic, social, geopolitical, and ecological forces are now converging towards the final demise of the existing world-system, that is, the capitalist world economy."

What comes next could be a rational world-system of production geared towards first fulfilling human needs, then wants, in an ecologically-sustainable manner. But while the current system's demise is assured, there is no guarantee of the character of its replacement, and, at this point, very little likelihood it will resemble the description above.

Is China the beacon of an alternative model country?

As a 1989 Tiananmen Square veteran, author Minqi Li risked his own life to defend free market democracy twenty years ago. Now, after seeing the impact of free markets on the quality of life for working people around the world, Li has become a Maoist/Marxist. Li is not ambiguous or ambivalent. He concludes: "A socialist world-government with global democratic planning will offer the best hope for humanity to survive the coming catastrophes and preserve the most important accomplishments of human civilization."

Li, an economics professor at the University of Utah, presents a China that is on the rise - although not as a military menace, but instead as the beacon of an alternative model country and one that will be asked to "provide system-level solutions to the system-level problems left behind by the US hegemony." Up until now, Communist China through its export-led economic growth has merged with and indeed played a key role in the global system of US-led capitalism. Now, as this system is in a state of demise, argues the book, China as a rising power will have to redefine itself in this new climate.

But there is a problem: Li doesn't see the leadership in China as quite up to the task. "Given the rules of the capitalist world economy," he writes, "can we count on the Chinese capitalist elites ... to act in accordance with human's long-term common interest?" Li makes sure that the reader is well aware that this specific passing of the torch takes place in a moment in history that is fraught with seemingly insurmountable challenges: an economic trajectory oblivious to science and the ecological limits to growth. Moreover, capitalism, Li asserts, is contingent on a form of manifest destiny in which China and its cheap labor and lack of regulations was the last exploitable front. But that final source is drying up.

In the process of discussing the rise and fall of global systems, we also learn something about the current state of capitalism. Li argues that the interstate-competition that enables capitalism and a world system that fosters collective and cooperative responses to global problems such as poverty, climate change and war implemented and enforced by a credible and international institution are dynamics that by definition are mutually exclusives. Thus, one can surmise, if we want to effectively deal with these global problems, capitalism must be the first thing to go.

Although this book presents itself as a rethinking of China's rise, it serves more as a rethinking of Maoist China, and through a rose-colored lens. This is where the credibility of the book wears thin. For example Li tries to illustrate that the 33 million deaths caused by Mao's Great Leap Forward from 1954-56 have been exaggerated. In fact, he argues, the Communist Revolution in China reduced the death rate so much that the death rate spike during the Great Leap Forward can be seen to represent no more than a return to the pre-revolution numbers.

But the book succeeds in bringing many important and thorny questions to the surface: "How will China's internal social structure evolve as China assumes different positions in the existing world-system? Will China's current regime of accumulation survive the potential pressures that will arise out of such a transformation? Will China become the next hegemonic power? How will the rise of China affect the underlying dynamics of the existing world-system itself?" As we watch America essentially nationalizing its banking industry and possible the automobile industry, too, and while China's banking, communication and transportation systems become increasingly liberalized, these are certainly the questions to be asking.

terrible service and results

Last november I ordered (directly from Amazon)The Rise of China and the Demise of the Capitalist World-Economy". After first being told a pub date, the date was withdrawn and for most of the time I was told there was no date, but you would let me know. When I was still getting this message from you I heard that the author had an upcoming promotion of the work at a local bookstore. At that point I canceled this direct order from Amazon and reordered through Amazon with one of your suppliers that had it in stock and offered quick shipment. Of course it didn't arrive until after this local bookstore event. I ended up getting the book late for more than half again the price I could have paid if I had simply bought it at the store (or directly from its publisher, Monthly Review). You really let me down on this one Amazon.
