Human Body Temperature: Its Measurement and Regulation, by Y. Houdas, E.F.J. Ring

The physiology of man is a complex subject. Unfortunately the regulation of temperature in the human body is not always well explained in textbooks. Many conference proceedings on the subject have been produced that give excellent detail on research topics. However, the subject matter is rarely presented as a composite whole. New technology has broadened the scope of methods available for studying body temperature. Thermography in particular has made it possible to record in real time the temperature distribution of large areas of the body surface. Modem image processing methods permit dynamic studies to be carried out and detailed analyses made retrospectively-a tremendous advance over the complex and slow techniques formerly used by physiologists. Yet although the associa tion between disease and temperature is as old as medicine itself, beyond the implicit faith in the clinical mercury thermometer, other measuring techniques are finding a slow acceptance. This book is designed to put into perspective the critical factors that make up "body temperature. " Body temperature cannot be viewed as a static entity but rather must be seen as a dynamic process. An understanding of this phenomenon is important to all who use thermal imaging and measuring techniques in clinical medi cine. These methods have, in recent years, brought engineers, physi cists, technicians, and clinicians together. Inevitably, however, there v vi Preface are gaps and overlaps in technology and understanding.

Principles of Social Evolution (Oxford Series in Ecology and Evolution), by Andrew F.G. Bourke

Living things are organized in a hierarchy of levels. Genes group together in cells, cells group together in organisms, and organisms group together in societies. Even different species form mutualistic partnerships. Throughout the history of life, previously independent units have formed groups that, in time, have come to resemble individuals in their own right. Evolutionary biologists term such events "the major transitions". The process common to them all is social evolution. Each transition occurs only if natural selection favors one unit joining with another in a new kind of group.

This book presents a fresh synthesis of the principles of social evolution that underlie the major transitions, explaining how the basic theory underpinning social evolution - inclusive fitness theory - is central to understanding each event. The book defines the key stages in a major transition, then highlights the shared principles operating at each stage across the transitions as a whole. It addresses in new ways the question of how, once they have arisen, organisms and societies become more individualistic.

Review

"A superb book, one that should change how we teach and think about life on our planet...an accessible, comprehensive, and highly readable overview, which will be invaluable in undergraduate teaching...equally suitable for frontline researchers from postgraduate to professorial levels." -- Stuart West, Science

"The book will be highly attractive to all those who are interested in the evolution of sociality, whether in insects or among individual cells. Its well-understandable account of inclusive fitness theory comes at a perfect time. It will rescue those who are confused by the current resurgence of models claiming that altruism, such as shown by the sterile somatic cells in our bodies or the workers in the societies of ants or termites, can evolve without relatedness. the much broadened, theoretical approach of this new book makes it an excellent complement to more descriptive treatises of conflict and cooperation." -- Jurgen Heinze, Biologie I, Universittat Regensburg, Myrmecological News

"This book is ideal for teaching undergraduates. Thanks to its clear structrure and the stringency of the arguments, the chapter on inclusive fitness could also serve as a stand-alone treatise. Yet in its scope and ambition, this work is not a textbook but rather sets the standard for the future of research in social evolution. As such, it will be indispensable for scholars in the field of social evolution in its broadest sense." -- Trends in Ecology and Evolution

About the Author

Andrew Bourke graduated with a degree in Zoology from the University of Cambridge in 1983, before conducting a PhD on the social biology of slave-making ants at the University of Bath. In 1988 he obtained a Junior Research Fellowship from Jesus College, Cambridge, which he held until 1991 in the Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge. In 1992, he moved to the Institute of Zoology, Zoological Society of London, where he was a research fellow and latterly a Reader. He has held his present position as Professor of Evolutionary Biology at the University of East Anglia since 2006. His research focuses on the evolution of social behaviour, especially in ants and bees. He has published around 50 articles on the conservation, behavior, ecology, evolution, and genetics of the social insects, and is coauthor of the book Social Evolution in Ants. From 2000 to 2006, he was an editor, then Editor-in-Chief, of the journal Behavioral Ecology.

A thorough, persuasive, and ambitious review and synthesis of inclusive fitness theory (aka, Hamilton's rule)
By Thomas J. Haslam
This book is intended for graduate students, advanced undergrads, and researchers in evolutionary biology, evolutionary genetics, and behavior ecology. It is scholarly not popular science writing, although the prose itself is clear and unpretentious, and the overall organization is outstanding.

Noting that "many still regard the business of social evolution as the beehive and baboon troop alone," Andrew Bourke seeks instead to "place inclusive fitness theory centre-stage in the analysis of the major transitions as whole" (5). The major transitions in the history of life being, for example, the origin of eukaryotes, the origin of multicellular organisms, and the origins of social organisms (10-15). (Bourke in fact defines six major transitions: 1. Separate replicators [genes] to cell enclosing genome; 2. Separate unicells to symbiotic unicell [eukaryotes]; 3. Asexual unicells to sexual unicells; 4. Unicells to multicellular organism; 5. Multicellular organisms to eusocial societies; and 6. Separate species to interspecific mutualisms).

As Bourke notes, "genes must cooperate to form a genome within a cell, cells must cooperate to form a multicellular organism, and multicellular organisms must cooperate to form a society" (5). Hamilton's rule properly understood, Burke argues, explains how and under what circumstances this cooperation occurs. In other words, common principles derived from inclusive fitness theory apply to each level of social organization, and so also can help explain each major transition. Bourke further divides each major transition into three principal stages: social group formation; social group maintenance; and social group transformation.

Before discussing in more detail what Bourke does cover, let me clarify what he does not.

Bourke does not cover "the appearance of complex social behaviours in humans" (25). This is not because he claims that human social behavior cannot be scientifically studied. He makes no such claims, and seems obviously to hold otherwise. Rather, as Bourke rightly points out, our "possession of language and culture inheritance," both more highly developed in humans than in other species, likely make "many of the puzzles posed by our social behaviour largely specific to ourselves" (25).

Although some will find this distinction objectionable, Bourke is primarily concerned with "hard" science - reviewing the work done by evolutionary biologists, geneticists, and ecologists. He is not discussing how inclusive fitness theory might apply to the social sciences or to evolutionary psychology. Stuart A. West, Claire El Mouden, Andy Gardner provide such a review in their article "Sixteen common misconceptions about the evolution of cooperation in humans," Evolution and Human Behavior 32 (2011) 231-262.

Bourke's concern, again, is how inclusive fitness theory can account for the major transitions in the history of life, from the emergence of eukaryotes to that of multicellular organisms to that of social organisms. This, I think we should agree, is ambitious enough.

Principles of Social Evolution is divided into seven chapters:

1. An expanded view of social evolution
2. A primer in inclusive fitness theory
3. The major transitions in light of inclusive fitness theory
4. Social group formation
5. Social group maintenance
6. Social group transformation
7. Synthesis and conclusions

Of these, I found chapter 2, "A primer in inclusive fitness theory," to be exceptionally accomplished. Bourke thoroughly works through the logic, proofs, and derivations of Hamilton's rule. He is not dogmatically following Hamilton or Dawkins or Maynard Smith; rather, he is comprehensively reviewing and in some cases synthesizing almost a half-century of scholarship following Hamilton's 1964 proposal of inclusive fitness theory (aka, kin selection theory).

The sub-chapters titles might give some sense of his level of coverage:

2.2 The effects of related on evolvable types of social action. Cooperation (narrow sense). Altruism. Selfishness. Spite.
2.3. Social conflict and the tragedy of the commons. Examples of kin-selected conflict. Intragenomic and intergenomic conflict. The tragedy of commons.
2.4 Assumptions of inclusive fitness theory. The scale of social behavior relative to dispersal. Causes of relatedness, interests of other loci, green-beard genes, and consequences for social evolution. Facultative gene expression. Genes for social action in nature.

Etc. Chapter 2 alone made the book worth the price for me.

Throughout Principles of Social Evolution, Bourke substantiates his claims with both scholarship and relevant examples. Likewise, the presentation of information in tables, charts, boxed content, and illustrations is generally good, with some of the tables and charts being particularly helpful or cogent. Bourke also ends each chapter with a summary of its main points. And his references section is everything it should be; the book's author index, reliable; the subject index, likewise.

I found Bourke's overall argument highly persuasive, that "each stage in a major transition to individuality (social group formation, maintenance, and transformation) frequently involves the same evolutionary principles acting in analogous ways at the different hierarchical levels" (198). Furthermore, that "social evolutionary theory in its expanded form" - Bourke's synthesis and application of work in inclusive fitness theory - "offers an interpretation of the selective basis of life's basic organization and history more profound and satisfying than alternative frameworks" and "conceptually unifies a very large range of different phenomena across all taxa, hierarchal levels, and times" (198-200).

I highly recommend this book to anyone both interested in the general topics of Hamilton's rule, social evolution & inclusive fitness theory, and who is willing to read technical and not just popular literature on the same.

Best written and most authoratative summary of the whole sweep of social evolution available.
By Paul J. Watson
I'm an evolutionary biologist with a central interest in social behavior (PhD, Cornell University, 1988.). I post-doc'ed with Bill Hamilton. I was fortunate to have some of the best evolutionary ecology mentors and colleagues around me for my whole life. I say, this book is both wonderful, thrilling, and authoritative. If you really want to know what's being figured out in this stunning area of biology, even if you are not a biologist at all, this is the book for you. It is the best written serious summary of the whole sweep of social evolution you can get. Buy this book, get into adult mode and be ready for a little very worthwhile work, and enjoy. I keep this book by my bedside with about 15 other "sacred texts." Note, my relatedness to the author is zero. -- Paul J. Watson, University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, NM, USA

One of the most unique photography books of the new Millennium
By Jonathan Higbee
If you're looking for a photography book quite unlike anything you've seen, Michael Ernest Sweet distillation of Coney Island is a no-brainer. Alternating between the grotesque and the beautiful, this collection of images shows Michaels love for his subjects is as strong as his love for Coney Island.

`O would some power the giftie gie us to see ourselves as others see us.' -Robert Burns
By Grady Harp
For those perhaps still unfamiliar with the artistry of Michael Ernest Sweet, he is a Canadian educator, writer, and widely published street photographer. The recipient of multiple distinguished awards such as a national recipient of both a Prime Minister's Award and The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in Canada for significant contributions to his country, he has been published in such magazines as Popular Photography, Black and White, and Fisheye. His debut book THE HUMAN FRAGMENT is an impressive sociologic statement and now he turns his Japanese toy Harinezumi camera (likely a trick to keep his elected figures he captures oblivious to his presence) to Coney Island where he manages to make a statement about American culture with a bite. Michael works and lives in both New York City and Montreal.

In a keen Foreword by famous photographer Bruce LaBruce the astute observer states, `Not everyone `has an eye', as the classic synecdoche has it, and not everyone has the sensitivity or intuitiveness, or perhaps even the perverse will and intention, to pursue a pure vision as an artists or photographer. So when someone like Michael Ernest Sweet makes a visual statement of such admirable consistency and acute perverseness, attention must be paid. With these Coney Island Photographs, Mr. Sweet pursues a relentless project of lurid color, composition, and perspective.'

The photographs Michael shares in this handsome book intentionally shadows the face so no one is `exposed' for their bizarre body forms or outfits. But what Michael captures is a vivid statement about the current plague of American obesity in all its plethoric abundance. Huge bells on both men and women are actually less offensive to the eye that the walking ripples of sagging fat that seep out of every opening in a swim suit. At first it is amusing and then it becomes a social comment that is disturbing. But that is the art of Michael's work - he offers us reality as seen through brilliant sunlight on Coney Island where the congregation when up and away form the beach towels is like headed toward the snack bar for more fast food infusions.

There are two sides to the traditional comedy/tragedy mask, and Michael captures both with gusto. He is an important artist who is growing into fame. See his images - and pause before slurping that Big Gulp. Grady Harp, May 15

A well blended mix of Meaning, Puns & Effects
By Olivier Duong
In this Photobook, Michael Sweet roams the beaches of Coney Island and gives us a body of work that has 3 things: Meaning, Puns & Effect. Something that is hard to do.

The effect is of course the over saturated colors, the lack of sharpness that gives the over all work a special look, but that isn't just for the effect. There is a high degree of grotesque in the work, something off beat. While the media wants to portray it's citizens a pretty, beautiful and flawless, Sweet's work presents them in a more real context, when all the guards are down, the effect really adds to this.

Throughout the images there are many subtle punctums, the punchline to jokes if you like. One that comes to mind is a shot of a woman on her towel. She's been obviously overcooked by the sun...until you realize that the towel she is on has a sun pattern.

What we relate to is a person's face but in this book the photographer chooses mostly to withhold that information and you are presented with the person's body, posture and personal objects. This forces us to examine our own biases, we judge people even by not seeing their faces!

I highly recommend this book, the photographs are visually unique, the content is like an off-beat beach "The Americans" with some nice puns sprinkled throughout. The joke is on us, I guess

Unlocking the Emotional Brain: Eliminating Symptoms at Their Roots Using Memory Reconsolidation, by Bruce Ecker, Robin Ticic, Laurel Hulle

Psychotherapy that regularly yields liberating, lasting change was, in the last century, a futuristic vision, but it has now become reality, thanks to a convergence of remarkable advances in clinical knowledge and brain science. In Unlocking the Emotional Brain, authors Ecker, Ticic and Hulley equip readers to carry out focused, empathic therapy using the process found by researchers to induce memory reconsolidation, the recently discovered and only known process for actually unlocking emotional memory at the synaptic level. Emotional memory's tenacity is the familiar bane of therapists, and researchers have long believed that emotional memory forms indelible learning. Reconsolidation has overturned these views. It allows new learning to erase, not just suppress, the deep, unconscious, intensely problematic emotional learnings that form during childhood or in later tribulations and generate most of the symptoms that bring people to therapy. Readers will learn methods that precisely eliminate unwanted, ingrained emotional responses―whether moods, behaviors or thought patterns―causing no loss of ordinary narrative memory, while restoring clients' well-being. Numerous case examples show the versatile use of this process in AEDP, Coherence Therapy, EFT, EMDR and IPNB.

Review

"Ecker's, Ticic's, and Hulley's Unlocking the Emotional Brain, like some earlier classics, draws from, adapts, and integrates the very best of the best currently available concepts and techniques into a powerful and accessible psychotherapeutic method. What sets this book apart is how these elements are mixed, matched, and delivered to each individual client. Packaged in a highly engaging read, psychotherapists of all sorts will find many resources which will enhance as well as ease their work."

―Babette Rothschild, MSW, LCSW, author of The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment

"Unlocking the Emotional Brain is one of the most important psychotherapy books of our generation. It brings the recent groundbreaking brain research on memory reconsolidation to the mental health field.... This is the first psychotherapy book to delineate the sequence of experiences the brain requires to heal. This is big, important information that is applicable across many treatment approaches. No matter how good a therapist you already are, reading this book will make you better."

―Ricky Greenwald, PsyD, founder/director, Trauma Institute & Child Trauma Institute, and author of Child Trauma Handbook and EMDR Within a Phase Model of Trauma-Informed Treatment

"Drawing on the latest developments in neuroscience, Bruce Ecker, Robin Ticic and Laurel Hulley provide an innovative approach to psychotherapy that is very much of the 21st century. In this book filled with both groundbreaking neuroscience and provocative case examples, they describe how to tap into the reconsolidation process in therapy. If you want to know what's happening that is new in psychotherapy, this is the place to start."

―Jay Lebow, PhD, clinical professor of psychology atNorthwestern University and editor of Family Process

"A major contribution to the field and a must read for any therapist interested in the process of transformation and healing. Beautifully written, the authors present an elegant integration of neuroscientific findings and psychotherapy technique, resulting in a step by step method for relieving longstanding symptoms and suffering. Even the most seasoned clinician will be inspired to learn from these masters."

―Patricia Coughlin Della Selva, PhD, clinical professor of psychiatry at the UNM School of Medicine and author of Intensive Short Term Dynamic Psychotherapy: Theory and Technique

"Read this book and you will never do therapy in the same way again! These authors show you how to do effective therapy rooted in the science of the mind."

―Jon Carlson, PsyD, EdD, ABPP, distinguished professor at Governors State University and coauthor of Creative Breakthroughs in Therapy

"A refreshing and audacious book that throws open the doors and blows the dust from the corners of clinical practice…. [O]ffering a 'virtually theory-free' methodology…, the authors…add a startlingly effective process to the repertoire of every clinician [and] build powerful alliances across clinical approaches…"

―Ann Weiser Cornell, PhD, author of Focusing in Clinical Practice: The Essence of Change

"A transtheoretical, effective and efficient approach, nicely grounded in recent neuroscience, for deep, transformational change in pernicious emotional implicit learnings…. This is a significant 'breakthrough' book…. I recommend it most highly!"

―Michael F. Hoyt, PhD, author of Brief Psychotherapies: Principles and Practices

"Imagine the founders of diverse therapy methodologies discussing how they achieve deep, lasting, transformational change and agreeing it's due to one basic process. Building on state-of-the-art neuroscience to identify that core process, the authors develop an approach that is theory-free, nonpathologizing, empathic, experiential, phenomenological, and nonspeculative, and that hones therapy while not cramping the therapist's unique contribution―an integrationist's dream!"

―Hanna Levenson, PhD, author of Brief Dynamic Therapy

"A unique, creative, and insightful book that…fits with recent neuropsychological findings on how the brain can alter and even eliminate old painful memories. This book is on the forefront of books that are using neuropsychological findings to illuminate psychotherapy."

―Arthur C. Bohart, PhD, professor emeritus at California State University and coauthor of How Clients Make Therapy Work

The Science of Emotional Change
By L. Daniels
I've purchased 100s of books from Amazon.com over the years and while I frequently read the customer reviews prior to a purchase decision, I've never before had the inclination or urge to write a review myself. This is my first.

As a little background and context, in my 2nd stage in life, I made a career change and am currently a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern nearing completion of my experiential hours required to take the licensing exams. A Masters Degree and 3000+ hours of experience does not qualify me as an expert in psychotherapy though it does give me a lot of face time with people suffering from mild to severe psychological issues. The training and supervision process has also shown me that almost all therapists struggle with how best to help our clients and what specific tools, theoretical modalities or other techniques to use to ease this suffering. Along the way, therapists, including myself, adopt theories that fit with our own philosophical beliefs and life experiences. Personally, I've found myself relating best to the 3rd Wave Cognitive/Behavioral Therapies (ACT, DBT, etc.) though Interpersonal Neurobiology (INPB) and attachment theory have heavily informed the therapeutic path I currently follow. Brief Therapies haven't been my focus, but I've occasionally come across things that feel relevant and helpful.

A few years back, I came across Ecker and Hulley's book, Depth Oriented Brief Psychotherapy, and it fascinated and moved me to consider the most logical notion that psychological "symptoms" are functional. Other paths caught my attention, but I've occasionally come back to this book and was very interested when I saw that Ecker, Hulley, (and Ticic) had a new book coming out. I immediately pre-ordered it. When it arrived last week, I picked it up, started reading it, and had finished it within a few days. Very few psychological theory books get me past a few chapters, but I read "Unlocking the Emotional Brain" as if it were a favorite author's novel that could not be put down.

I can't speak to the science behind "memory reconsolidation," but having uttered the phrase that "we don't get an eraser for our past" more than a few times, I was more than a little excited to read that it might actually be possible to erase and re-write implicit learnings/memory from our past. Attachment related issues are so common in this field, yet most methods of dealing with them are aimed at the therapist/client having an almost "reparenting" experience to provide the secure attachment the client didn't get early in life. "Unlocking the Emotional Brain" provides a very specific, detailed methodology for actually elimiminating those implicit, generally unconscious learnings we pick up from our life experiences from an early age and onward, thus reducing the need for the symptoms that support those learnings. I assumed the book would be a Coherence Therapy manual (and it is to a certain extent), but I was gratified to see it written as a trans-theoretical model of how psychological change actually happens and how a variety of types of therapy achieve this change. I can think of no other book in my library of psychology books that is more clear on the why, what and how of working with clients. I've already started using this new knowledge with clients and it's already produced results where there was stuckness prior.

I believe this book should be read by all levels of therapists, but especially students, interns, and those still struggling to find their theoretical home base from which to ground their therapeutic work... Cannot recommend highly enough.

Transforming Psychotherapy
By Ken Benau, Ph.D.
Many books about psychotherapy are touted as "must reads", but this one is deservedly so for several reasons. First and foremost, Ecker, Ticic and Hulley draw a direct link between the neuroscience of memory reconsolidation-- which refers to research demonstrating that emotional memories or "limbic learnings" can, under certain precisely delineated conditions, be "erased" or updated-- and transformation in psychotherapy. While much brain research offers us interesting re-framings or metaphors for what happens in psychotherapy, few findings guide the actual practice of psychotherapy. Thanks to these authors, we now have relatively recent neuroscientific research (previously unknown to most clinicians) that actually points the way toward how psychotherapy, at its best, facilitates profound, "second order" change. That is, change that re-organizes a person's implicit "models" of self, other and relationship that lie at the heart (or "roots") of a whole host of problems which commonly present themselves to psychotherapists. Linking the brain with psychotherapy was a dream of Freud's over 100 years ago; this dream may be close to being realized in this book, a stunning feat unto itself.

As if that wasn't enough, Ecker et al offer several other wonderful contributions to the literature. These include: 1) Outlining the essential features of "therapeutic reconsolidation", that is the direct application of the "memory reconsolidation" research to profound psychotherapeutic change; 2) Demonstrating how therapeutic reconsolidation occurs in several transformative psychotherapies, not only in Coherence Therapy (CT), the constructivist-experiential approach developed by Ecker and Hulley, but also AEDP (Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy), EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), EFT (Emotion-Focused Therapy) and Interpersonal Neurobiology (IPNB). When so many therapy approaches tout their "brand's" superiority, it is remarkable that these authors are truly committed to integration, that is to discovering what makes deep change possible across distinct schools of therapy; 3) Reviewing the literature on attachment as applies to psychotherapy, and demonstrating how "reparative attachment" (i.e. repairing attachment wounds within the therapy relationship) is one but not the sole means by which attachment injuries can be transformed; and 4) Providing four clinical cases from other practitioners of Coherence Therapy (in addition to several other vignettes interspersed throughout the earlier discussion of clinical theory), rendered in some depth so that readers can further witness the therapeutic reconsolidation process from the perspective of Coherence Therapy.

The authors and their colleagues achieve all of this, using language that is clear, precise to the point of elegant, jargon-free, compelling and at times even inspiring. These authors seek to excite the reader, as well as bring together the usually separate fields of neuroscience and psychotherapy. For this reader, they succeed in ways few books can compare. If Ecker, Ticic and Hulley's new offering doesn't become a groundbreaking classic, it ought to! But don't take my word for it: discover for yourself the many gems that lay within.

Consistent recovery...
By Robert W. Gorman
Putting the final touches on over a quarter century of clinical practice backed up by rigorous thinking, Bruce Ecker, Robin Ticic and Laurel Hulley have written a break thru book that sets itself apart from other psychology books in 2 significant ways,
1. A new way of defining recovery,
2. An explanation of why other systems of therapy occasionally work.

Methodology:
Perhaps most important, this book is based on the analysis of actual clinical cases. No hypothetical theories explaining how our behaviors are the result of imaginary forces like Id, Ego, Superego, Parent, Adult, Child etc. This book presents real Individuals recovering from a wide variety of psychological sufferings.

Recovery:
'Recovery' is defined with 2 very different meanings.
First, it's permanent, not the typical works for a while, then we return back to our original problems as is true of counteractive change philosophies as happen so frequently in both clinical practice and certainly in our prison systems.

Second, it's totally predictable!
If you follow the 7 Simple steps presented, the sequence of experiences the brain requires to heal, you will create transformational change in every case, no hits or misses.

Other approaches:
This book explains how & when other systems work. EMDR, AEDP, EFT, IPNB are all given significant space with clear cases and comparisons. Chapter 5 puts the currently over-popular Attachment theory into a more reasonable perspective.

Style:
This most readable book is supplemented by downloadable sections like the Glossary, an excellent e-experience. It's so nice to download & print out the Glossary of Terms and have it next to you while reading the book...

While tying the theory to recent neurological research, gives it additional scientific validity, if you don't like terms like limbic, pre-frontal, sub-cortical and synapses don't worry they're all crammed into Chapter 2, which you can skip with no loss of overall meaning...

Audience:
While the book's style is clearly focused towards psychotherapists, many others may also benefit from such a clear presentation of the common sense data of our daily lives...
