Most useful english book I've ever used.

I bought this book for an English class last winter. Now, I'm a music major and I have tons of music books, but I must say that this is the most useful book I have ever bought. Everything is explained in a concise and direct manner, and is easy to find. Whenever I'm in doubt of how to use a punctuation mark, or how to phrase something correctly I always come to this book. Whenever I have to write a paper, this book is right next to me. I love that its relatively small, too. Great book. Highly recomended.

Incredibly easy to use! Plainly explains concepts I was never taught in High School. I appreciated its emphasis on different types of speech and writing, from the most familiar to the most formal.

Probably the most important book I had to buy in college

Like a good dictionary, a good handbook for writers of term papers, research articles, bibliographies, etc. will serve one well for a lifetime. This particular edition (a required purchase for a course in college) provided me with critical information on using the now ubiquitous MLA and APA parenthetical citation styles. My undergraduate days are behind me, but I employ this book today in the workplace.

While there are now a number of excellent online sources for style citations, information literacy (especially how to avoid accidental plagiarism and suggestions for intelligent research strategies on and off the campus), and there is plenty of help embedded in (for example) Microsoft products for spelling and grammar checking, a well organized handbook on the desk is still an important tool for well written letters, notes and memos around the office.

Excellent Intro to Schenker

I've been looking for a book like this for a long time. I'm using it for self-study of Schenker's theories. I find Schenkers own works to assume that one already understands a lot about his theories. This book starts from the beginning, and leads you through some very complex and worthwhile ideas. I think any serious musician not acquainted with Schenker and interested in more than a superficial understanding of his thought could greatly benefit from reading this book (and working through the exercises).

Best when used by a great teacher

Forte's "Introduction to Schenkerian Analysis" is most effective when used by a good teacher. After all, this is a textbook and not a novel. I feel that some of the reviewers of this book are comparing Forte to Ernest Hemingway, or Robert Frost. Writings on music theory are extremely technical; they are almost never going to be eloquent or poetic. Sometimes things are difficult to understand. THAT'S WHY PROFESSORS EARN $90,000 PER YEAR.
This book contains several examples from the tonal literature that define, explain, and illuminate the principles associated with Schenkerian theory in a candid, matter-of-fact way. I recommend this book for anyone interested in music theory.

Excellent - Used in my compositional education

Having been taught this theory by Dr. Steven E. Gilbert at Fresno State (California) in 1984 through 1988, I used this book extensively for 4 years to build a comprehensive underpinning to my compositional technic beyond what I learned from modality up thru 12 Tone Analysis. A must have book from a very witty, incredibly agile & logical debating speaker, musician and eminent Musicology Professor, writer, critic whom I miss dearly since his death. Along with Allen Forte they both were able to express Shenker's methodolgy where Schenker had not written it down for us. "Forte and Gilbert set out explicitly to fill that gap and their Introduction to Schenkerian Analysis, published in 1983" --1. (below). He also used this theory with his work on the melodies of George Gershwin with his book, The Music of Gershwin (Yale University Press, 1995) - also available here http://www.amazon.com/Music-Gershwin-Composers-Twentieth-Century/dp/0300062338.

"He was working on a book that applied his Schenkerian methodology to rock and pop music, based on one of his courses of lectures at California State University, Fresno, where he had taught since 1982. Everyone with eye issues and glasses should have this video, It will change how you see life!!!!

This is a very interesting concept and for most of the world and people in it, they will laugh at you for doing this, but in the end, you will win the challenge of improving your eye sight. I had been given my "upgrade" of glasses to bifocals and it was at that moment that I became determined to prevent my eyes from degenerating further, I could not see the world in the larger sense as I had done for 48 years. I came across Mier Schneider's book on CD through Sounds True, from there I wanted to "See" the exercises and I'm glad I did as I was doing some of them slightly incorrectly. So far, It has been about 6 months, I am no longer uses any glasses, I still see double vision, but I can work through it. I work doing Architectural CADD drawings and believe it or not, I do not put my glasses on anymore. I have good days and weak days, but overall, the progression of degeneration has STOPPED and my eyes are getting stronger. It does not matter how long this takes, doing it is rewarding...

vision care. After the first time of using the
eyes exercises I immediately noticed that
my eyes felt very refreshed. My vision
has actually improved.

With the utmost respect for Meir Schneider. These exercises have helped me with moral support if nothing else. I believe they have kept me from going totally blind by exercising and strengthening my residual sight.
