Perfect for any adult who would like to have a positive impact on the "problem" children in their lives

If you regularly interact with a child who has problems coping with consequences, and you are at your wit's end trying to "get them to behave" or "just do their homework", this is the book for you.

The premise of Beyond Consequences is that there are some children who, for various reasons, do not have the coping mechanisms in place to handle adversity. This might be because of adoption, early trauma, long term illness, autism, or a host of other things.

This unfortunately means that when they are presented with a problem, they do not respond to "traditional" methods of "If you don't do this, then x will happen." In fact, traditional methods of consequences and behavioral modification will actually often make the problem worse.

Forbes introduces the idea that working with these children on a logical level will not work because they are farther away, in a primitive "fight or flight" mode almost all of the time. Her strategies focus on how to help these children calm down and learn how to feel safe in stressful situations, with a long term goal of them being able to learn the strategies and be more regulated on their own.

I picked up this book on a friend's recommendation. She has a child who was constantly in trouble at school and could not handle regular life the way a child her age should be able to. Thankfully my friend found this resource and after 8 months has been able to change her daughter's entire life.

This book is highly recommended for:

Helping Children with Difficult Behaviors Succeed in School (and in Life)-An Adoption Coach/parent's Perspective

In each of her books for adoptive parents, Heather Forbes has written knowledgably with an emphasis on compassion and understanding. In Help for Billy, her approach is again steeped in respect, empathy, and love for the child. He’s not scapegoated as the problem; he’s viewed as a child with problems. Billy is not a bad kid; he’s a kid that life has thrown into the white water and he is struggling mightily to stay afloat.

Yes, it is challenging to be the parent or teacher of a child like Billy. His behavior is problematic. It is both a symptom and evidence of Billy’s need for help.

Several points in the book resonated with me. First Forbes encourages educators and parents to reformulate the questions they ask themselves as they try to determine how to help Billy. Instead of querying, How can Billy change his behavior? She recommends asking, How can we assist Billy in feeling safe, supported and calm?

Until this second question is asked and the answer is found, changing Billy’s behavior with consequences, threats, and constraints is impossible. Even worse, it is damaging to the family relationships as well as the teacher-child relationship.

Relationship influences everything. It is the channel through which a child is influenced, healed, and motivated. In the absence of relationships that feel safe and calm, Billy will be unable to function because he will be entirely focused on surviving and/or escaping his fears. Learning and “behaving” take a backseat to survival in the moment of fear.

Another salient point of the book—alter the desired outcome—is phrased this way: “Your ability to give love and stay mindful is the new outcome.” This statement may seem contrary to the premise of the book—Help for Billy. How can focusing on emotions help Billy academically and socially? By removing his perception that he is in danger and creating a feeling of safety and acceptance, Billy’s brain has energy and space to spend on intellectual activity. As long as Billy is in survival mode, everything else is perceived as frivolous.

Soothing his fears is a huge step towards accepting Billy as he is right now, along with his trauma history and unpleasant coping behaviors. He needs love and acceptance in the present moment. Withholding support, love, and acceptance until he meets certain standards may sentence him to a permanent state of being judged and found short of the mark.

Billy’s path may never smooth out as parents and teachers would hope but the greatest gift they can offer is to scaffold him with the necessary support systems—emotional as well as academic—that allow Billy to begin the lifetime journey of healing his trauma.

Helping Billy offers practical tips for parents and teachers. In many cases, they flip the traditional paradigm 180˚. While the approach may seems “out of the box,” it is definitely doable and may be exactly what the Billys in our families and schools need.

As parents and educators, we must not lose sight that our goal is not to raise scholars but to raise productive human beings. We must nurture Billy’s spirit as our highest priority then we can hope to address his academic achievement.

As an adoptive parent and an adoption coach, I know the value of Heather's loving and relationship-focused approach. Many times I have reminded myself to pause and determine if my child's behaviors result from I"won't" or "can't." Our relationships have benefited from this solution approach. Just what I needed

I read this book in preparation for a meeting with teachers to discuss a behavior plan for my child. It was an excellent resource, and I also purchased a copy to give them. There were ideas for IEP accomodations that were new to me, and I taught for twenty years. The examples were helpful and several of the suggestions the teachers tried worked well.

Considered by many the greatest of the classic Greek tragedies, Oedipus Rex is Sophocles' finest play and a work of extraordinary power and resonance. Aristotle considered it a masterpiece of dramatic construction and refers to it frequently in the Poetics.
In presenting the story of King Oedipus and the tragedy that ensues when he discovers he has inadvertently killed his father and married his mother, the play exhibits near-perfect harmony of character and action. Moreover, the masterly use of dramatic irony greatly intensifies the impact of the agonizing events and emotions experienced by Oedipus and the other characters in the play. Now these and many other facets of this towering tragedy may be studied and appreciated in Dover's attractive inexpensive edition of one of the great landmarks of Western drama.

Tip-top commentary, amateurish translation

This Oxford translation of "Oedipus the King" is a collaboration between Stephen Berg, a poet, and Diskin Clay, a classicist. It offers excellent commentary, including an interpretive introduction, notes explaining obscurities, an appendix on Greek drama, and a glossary. The translation itself, however, is quite different: the dialogue is given in short, clipped sentences, and the choruses in unpunctuated free verse. Here is Berg's version of the choral lyric from "Oedipus" : "just now / from high snowy Parnassus / the god's voice exploded its blazing message / follow his track find the man / no one knows / a bull loose under wild bushes and trees / among caves and gray rocks" (p. 45). Berg's explanation for this style is that he wants to reproduce the effect of "broken song," and indeed this broken syntax looks much like the Greek on the page. This approach, however, sometimes sacrifices definition and intelligibility -- as in this passage, especially if the words are going to be spoken rather than read.

This play truly is a tragedy..It's a bit sick and twisted as well if the reader understands old English. Laius is told by an Oracle that he will be slain by his son. Oedipus, is told some years later, that he will slay his father and marry his mother. Oedipus leaves his parents and travels far to avoid this prophecy from coming true.

What I liked best about this play, is that it shows that even when one tries to avoid something, sometimes that thing just can't be avoided. The Fates are twisted and play sick games and this play just makes that all the more clear. It centers around Apollo as the god to look to, since Apollo was known to have the best seers in all of Greece, and it's two of his Oracles that deliver the tragic prophecies.

The story is truly sad and it's a bit depressing when the reader thinks of all the things Oedipus endured in his life, just for his wife who seemed to have known all along to withhold the information he sought.

I'm a big fan of the Greece myths and plays.. and I definitely want to delve more into the Theban Plays.

In subordinating itself to the facts of the death and resurrection of Christ for the forgiveness of sins, reason's created function is restored to some extent as it receives that forgiveness in the words of Holy Scripture and the visible means of Baptism and the Lord's Supper.

David Andersen holds a Ph.D. in theology from Wycliffe Hall, Oxford/Coventry University and has taught at several American universities. He lives in Salt Lake City, Utah.

a great rereading of a traditioned interpretation

There are so many projects out there right now that see issue with reformation approaches to the theology, and few protestants are responding in a way that's helpful. Andersen isn't really trying to answer critics of Luther as much as he's providing a better interpretation of his him. Gerrish and others have made a certain understanding of Luther's view of reason gospel. Andersen does a brilliant job of offering a better narrative.
I'd give the book 5 stars, but the only thing missing is the footwork in 1 (2?) areas. All of the quotes are in Latin or German with no translation. This book would be more accessible, I think, if these quotes were translated and the citations crossreferenced to the english editions.

About the Author
Dr. Pradip Kumar Dutta obtained his M.Sc. (Chemistry) and PhD (Polymer Chemistry) from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1987 and 1993, respectively. He started his career as a research scientist in Birla Research Institute, Nagda, Madhya Pradesh, India in 1992, before awarding his PhD degree. His strong interest in academics drew him to one of the best engineering institutes, Shri G.S. Institute of Technology & Science (SGSITS) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh in1993. He served there for about 10 years with different posts like lecturer, senior lecturer in chemistry and coordinator for Continuing Education Program (All India Council for Technical Education, Govt. of India). In 2002, Dr. Dutta joined as Reader in Chemistry in Motilal Nehru National Institute of Technology (Deemed University), Allahabad, India. His progress in academic activities through teaching, research projects, guiding doctoral and post-doctoral students, research collaboration with the liking researchers in India and abroad is continuing. His research interests includes synthesis and modification of polymers, nanomaterials/composites, functional polymers, drug delivery, wound management, tissue engineering, food preservation, etc., He has about 200 papers published in national and international journals, 18 book articles/chapters, and delivered 20 hours video-lecture programme, and prepared 18 course module. He has already supervised 16 M.Sc., 18 M.Tech./M.Phil./M.Pharma and 9 PhD thesis. Presently, 5 PhD students are working under him. He was awarded Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship-2007 and visited York University, York, UK. He was also awarded Chinese Academy of Sciences & Third World Academy of Sciences (CAS-TWAS) visiting scholar fellowship 2004, 2006 and 2009 and visited Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry, Changchun, China for collaborative research work. Beside these, Dr. Dutta extensively visited different countries like South Korea, Japan, Turkey, Switzerland, USA for academic purposes. Homemade Muscle is clearly inspirational. After reading it, you will have no excuses.

Although the whole book is worth reading and contains valuable (usable) information, the first four chapters are exceptional.

Chapter Four (What You Need To Know About Strength Training) is my favorite chapter. Anthony describes the differences between building strength and hypertrophy when doing body-weight training. He 'thoroughly' explains (among other things) what reps, sets, rest, and frequency to use to build strength and hypertrophy – and in what order. It is the best explanation that I've read on these topics, and I have over 300 fitness books in my personal library.

This is definitely a five star book.

Inspiring and Motivating

I was in a pretty severe accident about 10 months prior to purchasing this book. I had been t-boned by a motorcyclist speeding excessively. I sustained six broken ribs, fluid in the lungs, an injured spleen, and more. It took 4 months to recover, and the experience was excruciatingly terrible on so many levels. Like the author here, I am a lifelong athlete. I played competitive sports like Ice Hockey, and I made a career of my love for sports by teaching physical education. I also lived in Greece for a couple years when I was young, so I can relate to the lovely weather and ability it provides for an active lifestyle. So when I found out what this book was about and the story of the author, I knew I had to read it as I was struggling to get back on my feet and back to exercising.

The courage it must have taken for the author to write this is unreal. The shear detail of the accident and recovery is mind numbing. I was captivated as I read the story, and I felt like I was there. But the way he persevered and decided to move forward is inspiring. Having been through a life altering accident myself, his courage gave me some courage and made me feel not alone. Then to read about the project he created to help people be healthy was even more inspiring. Here is a guy who could have drowned in his sorrows, and he decided to turn it into a positive.

By the time I got to the portions on exercise, I already felt I was in trusting hands. The layout of the book is great. The way the chapters build on each other lets you slowly understand the points being made. Each idea builds on the next. Also the thoroughness of the information is amazing. For example, the section on the gym vs. home workouts makes the case for home so well. The book is easy to read, yet very informative. There are points I would not have considered. Every conceivable aspect of exercising at home is discussed. It really explains the how, why, what, and when of how to get fit at home. As some one who also has joined gyms only to not use them, the notion of exercising at home is new to me. This book shows it is possible. Beyond that, the book gives you applicable workouts to get stated.

In addition to the book, the website is a great tool. On there are videos, some of which are chapters in the book. Plus you can subscribe and get a free workout plan.

Even if you have not experienced a major trauma like this author, you can learn so much from this book. From life perspective and lessons to practical tips on how to get fit at home, this book is a winner just like the author.

The only book you'll ever need to transform your body and ultimately the quality of your life!

Well I've read more than 100 books during the last couple of years of my life and to be honest I am very selective when it comes to choosing books to read. That means, I read only influencial books that can give you not only theory but a step by step practical application as well, books that literally can change your mindset and ultimately your life so you can achieve your dreams, become a better version of you and one day wake up as a different person, a superior one who never looks back.

Today I came across to the "HomeMade Muscle: Strong & Lean Without going to the Gym" by Anthonny Arvanitakis and what I liked most in this book is that Anthony walks his talk. This is what sets him apart of the crowd and we all know that these days you can rarely find authors who practice what they preach. Period!

I admit that this is not only a motivational book but it also contains a step by step blueprint of exercises (videos included) you can do at home every single day. Plus even though Anthony is not a doctor, his life's experience gives him the permission to give you tips and advice when it comes to injuries and diet. To make the long story short this book contains everything you need to know to build a solid and healthy body without expensive gym subscriptions.

The good news is that I put on 4 pounds of body mass within 30 days of applying what Anthony teaches. Yes you may say that the progress I make is not fast enough but it's stable and as long as there is a sustainable progress I win, and you can do the same. Just study this book and most importantly apply it in your everyday life because information is not power, but applying the information in real world and seeing real results is not only powerful but exhilarating as well.
