En el inicio me pareci� que me pod�a ser dif�cil de leer ero el resultado fue diferente . La calidad del autor se puede observar p�rrafo tras p�rrafo . La indisciplina relativa del agente est� extraordinariamente bien descrita. Su ingenio en conectar hechos no es f�cil de describir.
El concepto de caja negra es novedoso . l lector puede pensar en la de un avi�n pero aqu� hay conexiones humanas , sentimientos , etc..

The latest book offered by M. D. Creekmore is called The Prepper's Guide to Surviving The End of the World as We Know.�This useful guide quickly and easily covers the full range of essentials in stockpiling and equipment from water, food, and tools to medicine, communications and weapons.

It's a 176-page book that it is chock full of really good advice about the most important areas. A big benefit of such an accessible book is to get a quick overview of essential preparedness so you can see where you might have gaps in your own setup. No single book can cover everything in complete detail so this "primer" includes recommended reference books in each topic--all of which appear to be practical, useful books for rounding out your reference library.

Within his guidelines are a few nuggets of in-depth reviews, like his personal experience with hand grain grinders and animal traps. We were glad to see the he got water purification issue right: he first recommends filters and only reluctantly chemicals.

I would probably have done the medical section a bit differently, but at least, he does mention natural and alternative remedies and sources. Most people forget about preparing for dental problems and he mentions some good options there. His comprehensive coverage of what makes a good Bug Out Bag is worth the price of the book alone, and comes complete with pictures of the type of gear he uses to prepare for a quick exit.

This is an excellent guide for everyone. He adds a lot of practical, tactical advice to his lists which is very valuable even if you are advanced in your preparations. It is nice to "compare notes" with other experts. The book is rooted in practical advice and is quite motivating because of the concise way he cuts through the clutter of unknowns.

Where to begin? Well, those who know me personally and even those familiar with my own books and magazine articles all have a pretty good idea about my perpetual appetite for survival-related information, and nowadays we sure do find a plethora of books, videos, magazines, and websites from a growing list of survival experts devoted to this realm, don't we? I am especially impressed with this new resource from this long-time prepper, author, and blogger MD Creekmore, and one area where I think it ascends higher than most other available prepper resources is in the comprehensive scope of it. This new book is so loaded with valuable long-term survival preparation ideas and common sense as to make it a godsend resource for every prepper's library in my humble opinion. To mention just some of the topics discussed, it addresse some of the author's reasons for prepping, water purification and water storage, food storage and other food considerations, urban gardening, raising chickens and other animals, self-defense and emergency tactical cosniderations after a societal collapse (with a brief and thoughtful overview of survival firearms), medical considerations, an in-depth discussion on bug-out bags and weighing the options of bugging out vs hunkering down, prepper communications, animal trapping, edible wild plants, bartering, long-term survival tools and gear, and plenty more. From this book I have learned things like which two-way radios are most suitable for which types of communications, and which types of traps are most suitable for harvesting specific kinds of animals, among so many other useful tidbits I'm sure I'll think of after I post this review. I intend to re-read it several times and keep it for reference. I've been looking for a book like this for quite a while, and now finally here it is. No way I can avoid going five stars on it.

Like his personal blog MD Creekmore is cogent and to the point in this book An easy read, but also a very informative one. If you are new to prepping and survival then this is an excellent guide to get you started the right way. If you have been prepping for years like me it is a great read to check if you are deficient in one area or another. What I love about the writings of MD is his practical solutions and seeking out low cost items you need, but still ensuring these are of sufficient quality. This is all gear he uses, so you know it passes muster. The guy lives the self sufficient life style so he is no armchair prepper. Good stuff and money well spent.

Another great book by an author who actually lives the life he writes about. I was happy to see that this book was like the previous books I've read by this author, and not filled with fluff and unrelated anecdotes. Just good factual info on how to get from unprepared,to prepared for any emergency. Great book for beginners as well as seasoned preppers. I found some areas in my own preparedness plan that I had overlooked thanks to M.D. Creekmore.

Struggle through this book.

I've already added a note to someone else's review, but it is good information in a shabby form. I had to read 50 or 100 pages and take a break by reading something that is light and well edited (Perry Mason mystery). So, read it for the information and hopefully Kindle will get around to editing it for the next guy.

I thoroughly enjoyed Bevan's other Diadochi-history book

I thoroughly enjoyed Bevan's other Diadochi-history book, House of Seleucus, and had high expectations for this one. I was not disappointed. Considering that book costs a dollar, I cannot recommend it highly enough, as centralized source of information about Ptolemaic Egypt.

First, the flaws. This kindle version, as of writing, suffers from less-than-perfect editing: in various places words are obviously incorrectly transcribed. One can usually guess which word was meant, and I think I only noticed twenty such words. This version also appears to be missing Bevan's preface. I can't take off more than a star for this, however, given that this is the only kindle version out there, and is a recent one. Physical versions of this book go for twenty-times the price, so this is still an excellent deal. And, in any event, I am sure that at least the transcription errors will be fixed in later versions.

As for the substance, the work is a bit less exciting than House of Seleucus, though this is due not to Bevan but to the more indolent nature of the Ptolemies, who spent less time conquering and more time feasting. There is a lot more discussion of administrative organization and the relationship of the Macedonian Ptolemies to the ancient culture of Egypt, along with some very lengthy excerpts from important Egyptian inscriptions, including the Rosetta Stone.

Though the tone is academic, Bevan does not cite his sources in the modern academic way (just as in House of Seleucus). However, he discusses his sources, especially when there is a controversy between them or a reference is particularly obscure. The point is that although the work is obviously well-researched, one does not get page citations. I do not think that page citations make a good history book, so no stars lost here.

Illustrations are few: one per chapter, usually showing the visage of the relevant Ptolemy. But this is not the sort of book that one gets for the pictures.

Highly recommended, despite some flaws in editing.

Review of Legacy: The Belief in Immortality and the Logic of Culture

Robert Fulton's Legacy rests on the premise that immortality is a central, driving value of human culture, and that the results of this deeply-held and centuries-old value have been at least as destructive to human culture as they have been enriching. A central irony exists in this proposition, which Fulton recognizes: the problem itself of mortality haunts human existence far less than its reaction to the problem - that is, the obsessive, imaginative, and pathological quest for immortality.
On a casual level, we may tend to recognize immortality as a religious argument, and that religion is an artifact of the ancient world; by extension, we might conclude that such mystical beliefs have little presence or importance in contemporary times. While Fulton cites research and examples of religious thought, ranging from small-scale tribalism to the Judeo-Christian traditions, his work also elucidates the problem of immortality from a philosophical perspective. For example, the human desire for immortality can be seen as an expression (however moot) of free will. Fulton writes in his first chapter, The Belief in Immortality, about how symbolic expressions of immortal desire - in clothing, literature, or architecture - are really just imaginative, complex attempts to reconcile the problem of mortality:

We claim, albeit for a brief moment, authority over our lives. With play, the transcendental is momentarily dethroned. It is we who are the primary actors and it is we who establish the rules of the game. The arena of play is the setting for the acting out of human aspirations and it is here that the mundane world prevails and time itself can be commanded to stand still. At such moments humankind creates its own reality, is master of its domain, and the arbiter of its fate. (35)

Fulton writes with such clarity and revelation to details of culture throughout the work. The book's third chapter, Semen and the Soul, along with being perhaps its most provocative, skillfully interprets the historical-cultural symbolism of semen as a destructive patriarchal force. Examples of semen as a symbolic misinterpretation are given in variety and historical range: from antiquity, he cites Gilgamesh and Aristotle; he also cites the Christian bible, Native American worldviews, and even the postmodern satire of Monty Python. Such a range of research and example pervades Fulton's work in Legacy, and adds considerably to the authority of his arguments.
A final note about Legacy is its style and presentation. This book is a rare work in that it appeals to both the research sociologist and the casual, public library reader. Its style and presentation are clear, precise, and intellectual, but never with pretense or evasion. Fulton's style and subject matter are eminently readable, and the wisdom gained from Legacy makes it well worth the read.

A Challenging and Exciting Book

Whether you are a Christian, a believer in another faith, or an atheist, this book may open up a viewpoint on religion that you haven't considered. In this book Professor Fulton, a renowned expert in the study of death, brings to our consciousness elements of our Western religious legacy of which most people are not aware. The belief in immortality professed by Christianity is the key theme. Professor Fulton explores this theme while investigating many other Christian beliefs and pointing out his problem with them. He analyzes and evaluates the non-rational and rational elements in our personal and our cultural legacy and discusses why he believes they are often distorted. You may not agree with his ideas, but they will arouse your curiosity and push you to clarify your own religious beliefs. I highly recommend this book to you.

About the Author

For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.

While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field—including those of former students, now in health careers—that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known.

In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. Marieb Science Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name.

In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor.

Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings Interactive Physiology� CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS), the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), and Sigma Xi. Human Anatomy & Physiology, Ninth Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.

Dr. Katja Hoehn is an instructor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Sciences at Mount Royal College in Calgary, Canada. Dr. Hoehn's first love is teaching. Her teaching excellence has been recognized by several awards during her 14 years at Mount Royal College. These include a PanCanadian Educational Technology Faculty Award (1999), a Teaching Excellence Award from the Student’s Association of Mount Royal College (2001), and the Mount Royal College Distinguished Faculty Teaching Award (2004).

Dr. Hoehn received her M.D. (with Distinction) from the University of Saskatchewan, and her Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Dalhousie University. In 1991, the Dalhousie Medical Research Foundation presented her with the Max Forman (Jr.) Prize for excellence in medical research. During her Ph.D. and postdoctoral studies, she also pursued her passion for teaching by presenting guest lectures to first- and second-year medical students at Dalhousie University and at the University of Calgary

Dr. Hoehn has been a contributor to several books and has written numerous research papers in Neuroscience and Pharmacology. She oversaw the recent revision of the Interactive Physiology modules, and co-authored the newest module, The Immune System. She has also played a large role in the development of A&P Flix™ animations and the Video Tutors in MasteringA&P, serving as a consultant and academic reviewer.

Dr. Hoehn is also actively involved in the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). When not teaching, she likes to spend time outdoors with her husband and two boys, compete in triathlons, and play Irish flute.

Book Package came with everything that was needed

I have seen a few comments/questions regarding what is included with this textbook. I am hoping I can clear up some confusion. I just received the "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)". This package came with the Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite (CD ROM), and the Student Access Code for Mastering A&P. If you need the whole package, this is the one to order. Also, it is important to note that the textbook comes 3-holed punched and you will have to put the pages in a 3-ringed binder. This book does not have a binding. I personally like this idea because if I know that we are going to be working on chapters 2 and 3 in class, then I only have to bring chapters 2 and 3 to class. I don't have to lug around the whole book. Also, it might be important to note that I ordered this book directly from Amazon and not from someone who is using Amazon to sell their book.

If you order the hardcover book, you will only receive the textbook. The hardcover book (at the time of this review) does not come with the Atlas, CD ROM, or the Access Code.

When you read reviews, make sure to look at the review carefully to see exactly which book/package is being reviewed. When you look at the reviews for "Human Anatomy & Physiology" it will show reviews from people who received the hardcover book, the kindle book, and the 3-holed punched book. These reviews are all mixed together. The review will tell you exactly which book/package is being reviewed. Personally I think this makes it very confusing but if you look carefully you will find the information you need.

UPDATE as of 1/30/2013
I have just noticed that Amazon is now selling a loose leaf edition without the full package. When ordering make sure you order "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)" if you need the full package. If it doesn't list "Mastering A&P with eText - Access Card Package" in the title then you are not going to receive the full package. Also, it seems like Amazon is making it more difficult to actually find this full package. If you search for just "Human Anatomy & Physiology", this full package is not going to come up in the search. However, if you copy and paste the full title: "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)", you should be able to find the correct package. I hope you find what you need.

Now that I have started my class that uses this book, I can now comment on using the Loose Leaf version vs a Hardcover book. Overall I do like that I can take a few chapters to class versus taking the whole book. Its much lighter and I enjoy that. The only bad thing I have found about having the loose leaf version is that you have to be more careful with the pages. The whole book is 3 holed punched and needs to be put in a 3 ring binder. When turning the pages, if you aren't careful, you can tear one or two of the holes on a page. It's usually nothing a little tape couldn't correct but if you are the kind of person who is rough on their books, turns pages aggressively, throws their books across the room, then you might want to invest in the hard cover book.

Not much difference between editions

I used the previous (7th) edition and got an "A" in my online Anatomy and Physiology class. From what I could tell, there was no difference between the cheaper 7th edition and the ridiculously priced 8th edition except for the picture on the cover!

I gave the book three stars because it was unclear and lacked details in so many areas that it left me confused. I had to clarify a lot of issues by looking them up online.

I resold my book after I was finished with it for the same amount of money I paid for it so all it cost me was the initial shipping fee.

FYI - I quit buying books at my campus bookstore after the first semester and have saved over $1000.00 so far, just by buying used, previous editions.

The latest ploy these unscrupulous bookstores use is to package up a bunch of useless items with the necessary textbook and sell the "bundle" at an outrageous price. It is criminal.

I always ask the instructors before hand what other materials are required and if I can use the previous edition. 99 percent of the time they tell me the ONLY thing I need is the textbook and the previous edition is OK. Occasionally a professor will insist on the current edition and I still save a ton of money buying it used on Amazon.com. When I am finished, I re-sell them and usually get all my money back!

We need to get the word out about the college bookstore textbook scams! It is an OUTRAGE!

One of my favorite school books (if that's possible)

I can't tell you how sad I was when I found out that the City Colleges of Chicago decided to use Principles of Anatomy and Physiology by Tortora and Derrickson for the second course of Anatomy and Physiology instead of this book. This book does a great job of putting the subjects in an order that is good to follow, with a plethora of great photos and drawings, and puts a section called Homeostatic Imbalance right after a section and explains some problems that go wrong in the part of the human body. Most chapters even have a closer look section with a rather corny title that they think is funny with an article that is usually topical and relevant. Really go above and beyond in muscle and bone chapters (giving you both a detailed drawing and actual picture of almost everything). Also, wrote in a style that is easy to understand; goes from the basics to the details of a subject very smoothly. Even my girlfriend, who has no interest in a career in the medical world, has flipped through most of the book and asked questions or stated how awesome something is. I plan on keeping this book to reference to for a long time.
