ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Leaving school early with few qualifications, Bryan Holmes went to work in a factory and then, in his own words, "got cheesed off, jacked it all in and went to university." Upon graduating he went to work teaching economics in a College of Advanced Technology and stayed in the profession for the rest of his working career. Bryan started writing seriously in the 1950s, but it was only in the mid-1970s that he turned to the western. "The odd thing is I'd never read a western until I'd written my first. Of course, I've read many since -- either to see how others do it or to read the books of writer-friends -- but I originally fell into the genre quite by accident." After The Avenging Four was accepted for publication, Bryan never looked back. In addition to a steady stream of accomplished westerns, he also began to sell short horror, crime and SF stories in the fields of science fiction, "and hearing actors speak my lines on the BBC, no less." Although poor health has now effectively ended Bryan's writing career, we are pleased to be reissuing two of his best-loved series -- The Reaper and Shatterhand -- in digital editions.

It disturbs me that the publisher has the same book out with three different covers and three different titles in this series.
Same. book; 1) Winnetou, The Apache Knight 2) Winnretou and 3) Winnetou and Old Shatterhand. All three have different covers.
Yes, as you would expect while reading this review, I got sucked into buying all three.

Excellent overview of the period before the Mongol Conquest

Fennell's book is a phenomenal overview of the period before the Mongol's invaded Russia, but focuses more on the decentralization of the Kievan state prior to the Great Invasion. This history does not privelege the Mongols with the transformation of Russia into an autocracy, but instead focuses on the internecine conflicts that resulted from the Rota system as the primary cause of the downfall of Kiev. Essential reading for historians of Medieval Russia.

The First Book in a Trilogy of Books written by John Fennell on the Medieval History of the Principality of Moscow

This book was written by the late John Lister Illingsworth Fennell in 1983. This book is really the first book of trilogy of books written by Fennell on the subject of medieval history of the Principality of Moscow. As the title of this present book indicates, the period of time covered by this book is the period of time from 1200 until 1304.

The second volume in this trilogy written by Professor Fennell in 1968 was "The Emergence of Moscow (1304-1359)." This period of time includes the reigns of Yuri Danilovich (1304 until 1325); of Ivan I (1325 until 1340), brother of Yuri; of Simeon (the Proud) (1340 until 1353); and Ivan II (1353 until 1359), all Grand Princes of the Principality of Moscow.

The third book of this trilogy of books was Fennell's biography of Ivan III (called "The Great") written in 1961. It was the study of Ivan the Great that became the great passion of Fennell's life. Accordingly, the latter books written by Fennell including the other two books in the trilogy described above, which actually deal with periods of time prior to the reign of Ivan III, are written in a manner which suggests that the time prior to the reign of Ivan the Great was a mere preparation for the his reign.

Be warned that if you get the print on demand version from Pearson, that there is a strong likelihood there may be pages missing. The copy I purchased second-hand is missing around 20 pages of text, making the book useless. If you can find an original printing with the illustrated cover from Longman, grab it, because this book is excellent.

subject a trifle misleading

Well worth the read

I think the author has a distinct bias in her writing but that said, she has portrayed a fascinating study of Indian dress and it has been a very easy read. When I chose the book, I thought the subject would interest me but that the writing would be dry. Far from it, the author has really engaged me from the start and kept a good flow throughout. I am very happy I chose to buy and read this book.

Excellent writing but there are cautions when writing about real criminals and a real gang that existed in the 1920's so personally I would like it better if researched and the story nonfiction. However, if like some crime history, enough facts are not available, this fictional twist could be very informative.

Corruption in 1920's Detroit is brought to life in vivid detail in this accomplished manuscript. The Purples, a gang lead by young Joe Bernstein, was formed when its members destroyed the Sugars, a rival gang, to form their own bootlegging syndicate in suburban Detroit. Bernstein, the street-wise gang leader, often finds himself at odds with Harry Riley, an employee at the office of the Detroit district attorney. Riley, one of the few incorruptible government officials, helped Bernstein when his girlfriend, Rachel, was wrongfully arrested, even after Bernstein assaulted him. When Riley discovers the depth of corruption in the DA's office, he quits but continues his quest to get Rachel released from the mental institution where she is being held. Riley's integrity remains unflappable as he returns to the DA's office to help rid the city of all corruption. But it is the rich detail of the multifaceted characters that brings realism to this well-crafted tale. The author reveals that not even the most hardened gangster is truly good or evil as gang violence erupts and the story reaches its fitting conclusion.

Couldn't put it down...

A finely crafted novel, this effort by W. K. Berger is worthy of every - and and any - superlative in the English vocabulary. Not to gush, but his use of first-person narrative, factual story telling, and film-noir 1920's style of narration took me back to my young days when I'd listen to radio shows such as ... "Only the Shadow knows what fear lurks in the hearts of men" - or something like that, but not so much "film noir" as much as the acting you'd see in an old 1950s black and white film. Then add in a hint of tongue-in-cheek humor, and there you have the character and essence of this novel. Very entertaining. The central character guides the reader through an extremely interesting expose of the gangs of Detroit way back in the 1920s, which for me, makes what I think should be required reading for any high-school English lit class.

This author - an award winning writer - took 10 years to complete the novel, and you can really tell. Like a piece of artwork finely sculpted, the end result is something that should be on anyone's bookshelf who enjoys fact-based historical fiction. Pull yourself away from the TV and delve into this magnificent novel. You'll be glad you did. I couldn't put it down once I started. 5 out of 5 stars.

Fantastic Read!

The Purples is a great, rum-running, trip to the 1920's and the nation's funnel for Prohibition--Detroit with its whiskey river border with Canada. W.K. Berger has woven together some of the most infamous gangland events of the century into a first-person narrative that is bloody, poignant and hilarious all at once.

Hang onto that running board as Joe Bernstein takes you from the illegal Palmer Raids of "Heinrich" Ford's Detroit to the bloody Collingwood Massacre. The largest funeral in Detroit history is the turning point for Berger's protagonist, wise-cracking narrator as well as for prosecutor Harry Reilly and microphone-slinging Jerry Barclay--a loudmouth radio host who's trying to play both sides of the Jewish/Italian mob war.

Perhaps the greatest new angle of this book is the compelling Bernstein who begins the novel rescuing his girl from city hall, piecing together an unlikely gang of Einsteins, philosphers and gorillas, dealing with the shame of his Jewish community and the hypocrisy of a town run by the automotive ruler of the world.

You'll have a hard time putting it down, if you put it down at all!

Mr.Berger delivers the goods on an outstanding gangster novel!

I just finished reading this book, and I can tell you that it is one of the greatest gangster novels ever! I think that W.K. Berger, does an outstanding job of story telling on the same level of other great novelist in the gangster genre, such as: Mario Puzo,Harry Grey,William Kennedy, and Donald Goines. I thought that all of the characters in this book were also top notch,Joe Bernstein, the Mob Boss, his brother Max, the:"consigliere", his Hit man/Bodyguard named: Abbie"The Agent",and that crazed psycho enforcer named; Grabowski and his killer "Babies" those carnivorous beasts, were all awesome! These thugs were some tough Jews. I found it very hard to put this book down from day one. There hasn't been very many, or if any novels,for that matter ,on the story of THE PURPLE GANG from Detroit, so that is one of the reasons that this is such an interesting read. The author,does a brilliant job of bringing to life the prohibition era,while keeping you on the edge of your seat with this great story. There is also some very dark information on the late Auto Tycoon Henry Ford, and how he ruled the city of Detroit as well. This is a PIT BULL of a novel, it just grabs you and won't let you go! Berger, also does a great job of showing the reader what this country was like as far as bigotry towards Jews in the early 20th century, and also exposes the criminal element in their community as well, which you don't find often today. A lot of people are not aware of the fact that Jews, were some of the worst gangsters and killers ever in American history,(See:Meyer Lansky,Bugsy Siegel,Mickey Cohen,Lepke Buchalter,Dutch Schultz,Murder,Inc., and today,the so-called:Russian Mafiya). Get this book if you're into great story telling. It will be a classic novel in the gangster genre.

Considering the wealth of Alfred Hitchcock books produced recently, it's good that Krohn (Hollywood correspondent for the influential Cahiers du cin ma) finds the director's oeuvre inexhaustible. First published last year in France, where it won the Prix de la Critique, this book refutes the director's mythology. Krohn argues that the enigmatic director, once quoted as saying that once the screenplay was finished the actual making of the film bored him, was more open to improvisation and less a slave to the script and storyboard than his public image allowed. Focusing on the Hollywood years, Krohn examines each of the major films and details the progression of the filming, from casting to titling, adding interesting commentary gleaned from Hitchcock's papers. Although the thesis is a bit overstated, the sumptuous photographs alone make this a necessary addition to film libraries. Krohn at work on Hitchcock

First and foremost I shoud state that although I consider myself a film buff, I emphatically dislike the medium of coffee table books. They appear to be just another way to rip off consumers by creating great expensive "packages" with little or no substance. There are of course exceptions to this generality and the best one I've seen so far is this epic retelling by Bill Krohn of the work of Alfred Hitchcock. The Master's centennial has come and gone and with it so has the media hoopla surrounding him that made any interested fan at a loss to find the right vehicle to discover what it was that made him indeed the Master. Now that the dust has settled, Bill Krohn's book on Hitchcock emerges as the undisputed source for Hitchcock's film work. Yes, it is formatted as a coffee table tome but this unprecedented work requires nothing less.Meticulously researched, Krohn has done the unthinkable in his text and graphics by not only debunking the great myth of the director tyranically planning the enitre film in advance of production but uses storyboards and the like to prove this worthy point. Nor does Krohn rely solely on the sometimes faulty memory of the directors collaborators. He substantiates all claims with archival production notes to state emphatically once and for all that Hitchcock's genuis lay not in the pre-programmed myth of his work but his ability to be malleable in the collective art of filmmaking. In short, Bill Krohn's book has made me re-evealute the coffee table book format and more importantly, the work of the great Alfred Hitchcock!

Hitchcock at Work - Not Just Another Picture Book

Anyone trying to decide whether to buy Bill Krohn's new, award-winning Hitchcock at Work should know that this reviewer is particularly pleased to be able to offer an unqualified thumbs up. Using original sources and applying a formidable intellect, Krohn has assembled the kind of "behind the camera" quiltwork that humanizes Hitchcock the great director without debunking the genius of the master's artistry. Real-life events and historic accuracy are the high octane fuel of the prose, and a great selection of finely printed color and black and white photos, from the archives, from the movies and from selected production sources, add depth and texture. Those who know Krohn and his seemingly boundless knowledge of films, directors, writers, actors, camera people and producers, will not be surprised to find in Hitchcock at Work the kind of revelations that make the best biographies compelling reading. The book is big in every way. Hitchcock at Work not only has visual coffee-table appeal, but is also an excellent reference tool. It will surprise and delight real cineastes and casual movie goers alike. In addition, Krohn writes from the perspective of someone who understands how movies are made. His years as a publicist at Fox and the work he did posthumously on behalf of Orson Wells, assembling and producing a completed version of that director's previously unfinished South American movie, along with decades of critical writing for the prestigious Cahiers du Cinema, give him a rare skillset with which to gently and precisely open up Hitchcock's world in ways hitherto unavailable to film buffs and audiences. But Krohn is no intellectual snob. His excellent prose style is clear and readable. If you can only buy one book about Hitchcock, this is the one, whether for its film history, detail and insights, or simply because you want easy access to the many images and visual delights which Hitchcock brought to the screen. Five stars aren't enough! END

An essential book about a great director

In essence, this is a book intended to demythologize Alfred Hitchcock. It has long been a staple of criticism on Hitchcock's films to buy into his assertions that he made his films in his head, via screenplays and storyboards, prior to production, and that the production itself was largely irrelevant. This claim, amazingly, has gone largely uncontested until Krohn's book comes along and shatters it to pieces. One would expect that that sort of demythologization would result in a feeling that Hitchcock's films were, somehow, less great than we felt them to be before, but that is anything but the case. If anything, Krohn's work reaffirms Hitchcock's status as one of the all-time great filmmakers.
A previous reviewer criticized Krohn's book for giving some films more attention than others. Why carp? What's here is great, and it is reasonable to assume that Hitchcock improvised more on some sets than he did on others, and that the sort of documentation one needs to do the necessary research was more in abundance for some films than for others. Therefore, it is unfair to expect a film-by-film rundown. What we should focus on is what IS in the book, not what isn't, and what's here is amongst the most important work ever done on Hitchcock's films.
If you are a fan of Hitchcock's, and enjoy reading about his films as well as watching them, then you owe it to yourself to own this book.
