Great book!
By Rita Derego
I can't recommend this book highly enough! I really didn't know what the term legalist meant, even though I had been in legalistic,performance-based churches most of my life. What surprises me about Andrew Wommack's books and television ministry is that I barely knew they existed (even though his main ministry headquarters) is a few miles from my home. I am hoping more people will be exposed to his books and ministry soon. Even though Andrew is a separate ministry from a church that meets at the Bible college here--I was curious as to what a church would look like (and be like at the core) that was in unity with what Andrew is teaching and writing about. Ahhh! Breath of fresh air. I've been a Christian for many decades, but didn't really have a correct view of the nature of God. Glimpses, yes. But I believe Andrew's book and what he is teaching on TV is more accurate that most anything I've read or seen. I have seen and read several who are in agreement though--and actually Andrew's books and teachings are bringing it together for me. I did read the one semi-critical view of Andrew's book. And it is food for thought. I am rarely (if ever) so enamoured of any personality (except Jesus) to blindly swallow everything that is said. There is some validity to the view of the OT in that review that may be a little weak in Andrew's book. But the true nature of God and His grace and the clear explanation do outweigh those possible weaknesses for me. Obviously God is so deep and wide, we aren't going to get a full picture of His nature in this lifetime or in one book. But I think this one book of Andrew's is such a great start for either a new believer or an old believer like me who never got balanced teaching. As for Andrew writing and talking like a Texas hick (I've read and heard him say that himself) I'd like to say that I come out of a totally different backround than Andrew--but that doesn't turn me off.(As long as Andrew doesn't pomade his hair and scream that Jeezuss will love me more if I give seed faith gift of a specific amount, I'm OK with hickdom.) I actually believe Andrew might consider not even mentioning it anymore! LOL! (I've had a little experience in the Christian writing field--and Andrew's writing style is actually very good.) Whether you are a Cambridge don like C.S. Lewis, a "hick" like Andrew; educated like the Apostle Paul or a crude fisherman like the Apostle Peter--who cares as long as you are speaking under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. That's all it boils down to. Actually what inspires me about Andrew's teachings and writings (besides the fact I believe he is Holy-Spirit inspired) is his balance on the charasmatic. I've been in both kind of churches--those who believe the gifts passed after the last NT apostle died--and those who are into charasmatic excesses that make me spiritually ill. If you read enough of Andrew's books--and listen to his TV shows for a couple of months (it took me months and months to get the big picture cause I'd been burned by other teachers who sounded good at first) you can discern the balance there. And that balance comes from really seeing the whole of the OT and NT with God's grace and mercy. Yes, I do agree the wrath and judgment of God are a little glossed over on TV and in the books. That's something I am watching and learning. But overall--his book is very helpful. I am not totally sure obviously of all his teaching motives--but I suspect one motive is--to almost deprogram people who have been in legalistic, God-as-only-wrathful, performance-based churches. Or people who have been in wildly unbalanced charismatic churches. At any rate--his book and TV shows have had almost a deprogramming effect on me.

Good at what it does
By wiredweird
What it does: lead the reader through the basic concepts of classic operating systems: processes, synchronization, memory, virtual memory, file systems, IO, and security. Each section alternates between text and answered problems, as is usual for a Schaum's Outline. That's very helpful - putting a concept to use on one problem drives the point home better than a hundred pages of reading. The reader who completes this book, working a good number of the problems, will have seen most of the topics presented in a one-term OS class. No problem there.

The book necessarily lacks in breadth and in detail, however. This book doesn't try to be a Tanenbaum, and isn't, so it skips many crucial topics. The interaction of hardware and OS is very under-represented. That includes things like memory-mapped IO, interrupt levels, multiprocessor configurations, and cache coherency. It mentions real-time systems, without discussing the many ways that embedded kernels differ from Windows. It discusses priveleged instructions, but skips context switching between privelege levels. The section on virtual memory skips a lot - how it interacts with a system's process structure, multiple address spaces, shared pages, reasons for non-pageable memory, and more. It brings up ancient topics, like swapping and overlays, that have just about no significance in major commercial systems. Having brought them up, it fails to mention why they're no longer relevant.

But there's only so much you can cram into a 228-page summary. The content is worth three stars at best, but I give it one more for (mostly) meeting its goals.

Excellent supplement
By Quikwitt
I have over 10 Schaum's guides for my various courses. I would say this OS guide is perhaps the best one along with the Seymour Lipschutz's erudite "probability" (not to be confused with Murray R. Spiegel's befuddled attempt for Schaum's).
The last reviewer's comments seemed unwarranted especially since this book has more then enough problems on semaphores even if it's not as strong on file systems. This book is spot on covering the important parts of the classic operating systems curriculum from the sublime Tannebaum to the feckless Nutt. This book has an abundance of sample problems from all the major topics: File Systems, Interprocess communication, Device I/O, Networks, Security, and the dreaded Virtual Memory. Besides this the author covers algorithms, from the Philosophers to Bankers, from Hard drive c-scan to Paging LRU. I find the author easy to understand, complete, and very much in tune with what you will likely be tested on. I can honestly say this 200 page book was more valuable to me then the pescribed text.

Mediocre book, disappointing
By Arvind Kannan
I was looking for a rigorous review to supplement my Operating Systems course and I found that this book certainly fell short of that. I wanted more practice for the kinds of questions we would get on exams, but many of the topics addressed were treated at too simplistic of a level.
I also would have have preferred a range of examples dealing with topics like semaphores and mutual exclusion, deadlock, file systems, but instead all the sample questions were disappointing and I found myself actually wasting time with this book. It would have been more productive to have just stuck with the textbook. Usually Schaum's does a good job, but I think they seriously fell short with their Operating Systems book.

Amazon.com Review
In both Linux and Unix, becoming proficient at using shell scripts is an essential skill for both programmers and administrators. Filled with numerous exercises and examples, Ellie Quigley's Linux Shells by Example provides a comprehensive tutorial to two of the most popular Linux shells: the Bourne Again shell (bash) and the TC shell (tcsh). For any Linux user, this title is all you need to bring your shell-programming skills up to speed.

This book opens with a tour of the history and function of traditional Unix shells (from Bourne, C, and Korn shells) before centering on Linux variants, bash and tcsh. The text then turns to three powerful utilities: grep (for file searching), sed (for noninteractive file editing), and gawk (which allows programmers to write powerful scripts that process files using regular expressions).

There are dozens of sample commands to try out here. (With shell programming, the genius is truly in the details, and the only way to learn the shell is to try it out for yourself.) As an experienced teacher, the author provides a wealth of examples that take you through both the common and more esoteric features of these utilities. Instead of hard-to-decipher man pages, there she includes dozens of sample commands with correct syntax, plus clear explanations.

The rest of this book looks at the bash and tcsh shells in detail, from interactive mode to shell programming with full coverage of the basics of writing reusable scripts. Final sections of Linux Shells by Example look at common Linux file and system commands for easy reference, and the book ends with a useful appendix on quoting styles for five different shells. In all, this book's clear presentation style and plentiful examples will help any Linux user become a competent shell user and script programmer. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Survey of Unix shells (the Bourne, C, and Korn shells), survey of Linux shells (the Bourne Again and TC shells), processes, shell environments, tutorial for regular expressions, grep for file searches, the streamlined editor (sed), awk/nawk/gawk scripts, gawk basics and expressions, gawk programming (variables, arrays, flow control, built-in and user-defined functions), the bash and tcsh shells (interactive mode, programming tutorial for shell scripts), reference to common Linux/Unix utilities, comparison of shells, and tips for using correct quoting styles within shells.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

Playing the "shell" game has been a lot of fun with UNIX, and now with Linux as well. After publishing my previous book, UNIX Shells by Example, Mark Taub (the Prentice Hall acquisitions editor who keeps me writing books) suggested I write a Linux shells book. We both thought it would be "a piece of cake," or at least I did. After all, there shouldn't be much difference between the Bourne and Bourne Again shells, or between C and TC shells; Maybe just a few neat new figures, right? Wrong! This project was like writing a brand new book from scratch.

Although there are many similarities, the UNIX and Gnu tools and shells offer a plethora of new extensions and features. Linux offers not only the Gnu tools, but also a number of fully functional shells. Since I had already covered the Korn shell in detail in UNIX Shells by Example, I decided to concentrate on the two most popular Linux shells-Bourne Again shell (bash) and TC shell (tcsh).

Due to all the new features, enhancements, built-ins, etc., the shell chapters had to be split up, or they would have become unwieldy. What in the previous book consisted of two chapters has now become four. It was a lengthy, tedious process and when I had just about completed the bash chapter, I realized I was not using the most up-to-date version, so back to the drawing board I went. Since all of you will not necessarily be using the same version of bash, I have tailored this book to cover the old and the new versions.

The first section of this book presents the Gnu tools you will need to write successful shell programs-gawk, grep, and sed. These are the ideal tools for pattern matching, manipulating, text editing, and extracting data from pipes and files.

When learning about the shell, it is presented first as an interactive program where everything can be accomplished at the command line, and then as a programming language where the programming constructs are described and demonstrated in shell scripts.

Having always found that simple examples are easier for quick comprehension, each concept is captured in a small example, followed by the output and an explanation of each line of the program. This method has proven to be very popular with those who learned Perl programming from my first book, Perl by Example, and then shell programming from UNIX Shells by Example. Linux Shells by Example should get you up to speed quickly and before you know it, you will be able to read, write, and maintain shell programs.

The shells are presented in parallel so that if, for example, you want to know how redirection is performed in one shell, there is a parallel discussion of that topic in each of the other shell chapters, and for quick comparison there is a chart in Appendix B of this book.

It is a nuisance to have to go to another book or the Linux man page when all you want is enough information about a particular command to jog your memory on how the command works. To save you time, Appendix A contains a list of useful commands, their syntax, and a definition. Examples and explanations are provided for the more robust and often-used commands.

The comparison chart in Appendix B will help you keep the different shells straight, especially when you port scripts from one shell to another, and as a quick syntax check when all that you need is a reminder of how the construct works. It compares Korn, Borne, Bash, Tcsh, and C shells.

One of the biggest hurdles for shell programmers is using quotes properly. The section on quoting rules in Appendix C presents a step-by-step process for successful quoting in some of the most complex command lines. This procedure has dramatically reduced the amount of time programmers waste when debugging scripts with futile attempts at matching quotes properly.

Useful script writing skills!!
By M. Sale
I love the explanations of scripts in here... there are so many books that either give you a finished script or the same thing you find in the man pages... this book guides you to understanding the scripts that you write.
The format of "Example" followed by "Explanation" lets you understand exactly what is going on.
Skills developed cross over to other OSs like Solaris and HP with some minor differences.
For those who come to me with hopes of walking onto a customer site and understanding their admin scripts this is the tutorial I suggest.
I would have titled this book a marketing unfriendly "Scripting with grep, awk and sed on the Linux shells."
For all that... I would like to have seen really cool practical uses for activities like monitoring system performance, backup and recovery and interacting with applications programs (like Oracle's sqlplus and svrmgrl). That said, you can take the principles learned and easily apply them to these areas.
Also makes a nice reference with some stick-ums.

This book will make your life easier
By Batara Kesuma
I found this book very easy to understand, but if you are looking for something more advance, this is not for you. The style of writing in this book is very easy to follow. Like what is written on the title, it has lots of examples, and an explanation always comes after the example. It is not only about shell, this book also has good basic knowledge and information about grep, sed, and awk. If you use Linux, and want to learn shell programming, get this book. I also found that the examples used in this book were very close to the real life problems we often meet in Linux.
The only reason that I rate only 4 stars for this book is because some similar part gets repeated too often in this book.

Great Examples for Shell Scripting from Basic to Advanced
By A Customer
I just bought this book, and can't put it down. I have been working with Linux for several years, and find there is still a lot to know. This is a very useful book and reference already. It covers several topics from basic introductions to in-depth teachings. Great explanations of examples as well.

Demystifying Switched Capacitor Circuits (v. 1), by Mingliang (Michael) Liu

This book helps engineers to grasp fundamental theories and design principles by presenting physical and intuitive explanations of switched-capacitor circuits. Numerous circuit examples are discussed and the author emphasizes the most important and fundamental principles involved in implementing state-of-the-art switched-capacitor circuits for analog signal processing and power management applications. Throughout the book, the author presents numerous step-by-step tutorials and gives practical design examples.

While some quantitative analysis is necessary to understand underlying concepts, tedious mathematical equations and formal proofs are avoided. An intuitive appreciation for switched-capacitor circuits is achieved. Much of the existing information on contemporary switched-capacitor circuit applications is in the form of applications notes and data sheets for various switched-capacitor ICs. This book compiles such information in a single volume and coherently organizes and structures it.

* Step-by-step tutorials which emphasize the most fundamental principals
* Few tedious mathematical equations
* The first easy-to-understand compilation on this subject

Worth Buying
By Dave Hiker
Bought this book 3 wks ago while traveling in the Bay Area. The book , in my opinion, is well-structured and detail-oriented. The information presented in this book is current and mostly accurate. However, as the author himself has pointed out in the preface: The maths have been minimized, the fact of which seems both good and bad to me: The good thing is that the book is a simple and easy read; but the bad thing is that a few concepts are poorly explained, for example, the sensitivity of a switched-capacitor ladder filter seems delibrately avoided by the author in my view.

Of course, there are quite a few positive points on the other side of the axis, such as the discussion on data converter's resolution in relation to speed and clock jitter, or the anatomy of a dc/dc multiple-gain converter, etc. Thus, despite a couple more disappointing aspects, on the whole, I rate this book a fairly good reference that is worth buying, and more importantly, worth reading/keeping.

A good book to buy
By A reader
I bought this book here. I am a new circuit designer who just finished my master degree in EE. I like this book very much. I found the chap. of switched cap. data converters very helpful; I also gain some insights on switched cap delta-sigma mod through reading the last chap. I sincerely recommend it. It is a good buy.

Don't waste your money
By Robert B. Sanders
I bought this book based on Amazon reviews soon after it was released. Looking back I see many of the positive reviews are dated prior to the book availability. How can people recommend a book they haven't read?

I was very excited by the table of contents because the topics were exactly what I was looking for. However the author failed to deliver anything useful to gaining insight on the topics.

Specific criticisms:

1) The author writes in a rambling stream-of-consciousness style with no apparent direction for anything written.

2) There are no detailed explanations; only the authors tips and generalizations.

3) Equations given with no explanation of what the variables represent.

4) Examples give answers contradictory to the math shown.

5) Inconsistent notation.

6) Descriptions include nodes that are not labeled on the schematics so the reader is left to guess what part of the circuit is being discussed.

7) Large portion of book is MATLAB code with no documentation.

This book demystifies nothing.

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity, by David Allen

In today's world, yesterday's methods just don't work. Veteran coach and management consultant David Allen recognizes that time management is useless the minute your schedule is interrupted; setting priorities isn't relevant when your e-mail is down; procrastination solutions won't help if your goals aren't clear. Instead, Allen shares with readers the proven methods he has already introduced in seminars and at top organizations across the country. The key to Getting Things Done? Relaxation.

Allen's premise is simple: our ability to be productive is directly proportional to our ability to relax. Only when our minds are clear and our thoughts are organized can we achieve stress-free productivity. His seamless system teaches us how to identify, track, and-most important-choose the next action on all our tasks, commitments, and projects and thus master all the demands on our time while unleashing our creative potential. The book's stylish, dynamic design makes it easy to follow Allen's tips, examples, and inspiration to achieve what we all seek-energy, focus, and relaxed control.

Amazon.com Review
With first-chapter allusions to martial arts, "flow," "mind like water," and other concepts borrowed from the East (and usually mangled), you'd almost think this self-helper from David Allen should have been called Zen and the Art of Schedule Maintenance.

Not quite. Yes, Getting Things Done offers a complete system for downloading all those free-floating gotta-do's clogging your brain into a sophisticated framework of files and action lists--all purportedly to free your mind to focus on whatever you're working on. However, it still operates from the decidedly Western notion that if we could just get really, really organized, we could turn ourselves into 24/7 productivity machines. (To wit, Allen, whom the New Economy bible Fast Company has dubbed "the personal productivity guru," suggests that instead of meditating on crouching tigers and hidden dragons while you wait for a plane, you should unsheathe that high-tech saber known as the cell phone and attack that list of calls you need to return.)

As whole-life-organizing systems go, Allen's is pretty good, even fun and therapeutic. It starts with the exhortation to take every unaccounted-for scrap of paper in your workstation that you can't junk, The next step is to write down every unaccounted-for gotta-do cramming your head onto its own scrap of paper. Finally, throw the whole stew into a giant "in-basket"

That's where the processing and prioritizing begin; in Allen's system, it get a little convoluted at times, rife as it is with fancy terms, subterms, and sub-subterms for even the simplest concepts. Thank goodness the spine of his system is captured on a straightforward, one-page flowchart that you can pin over your desk and repeatedly consult without having to refer back to the book. That alone is worth the purchase price. Also of value is Allen's ingenious Two-Minute Rule: if there's anything you absolutely must do that you can do right now in two minutes or less, then do it now, thus freeing up your time and mind tenfold over the long term. It's commonsense advice so obvious that most of us completely overlook it, much to our detriment; Allen excels at dispensing such wisdom in this useful, if somewhat belabored, self-improver aimed at everyone from CEOs to soccer moms (who we all know are more organized than most CEOs to start with). --Timothy Murphy

From Booklist
Allen, a management consultant and executive coach, provides insights into attaining maximum efficiency and at the same time relaxing whenever one needs or wants to. Readers learn that there is no single means for perfecting organizational efficiency or productivity; rather, the author offers tools to focus energies strategically and tactically without letting anything fall through the cracks. He provides tips, techniques, and tricks for implementation of his workflow management plan, which has two basic components: capture all the things that need to get done into a workable, dependable system; and discipline oneself to make front-end decisions with an action plan for all inputs into that system. In short, do it (quickly), delegate it (appropriately), or defer it. While an infomercial for the author's consulting practice, this road map for organizational efficiency may help many who have too much to do in too little time, both professionally and in their personal lives. Thoughts on Allen's Getting Things Done - Build a structure for tasks, use it & clear your head. Great advice!
By Mark B Gerstein
Overall I found the book a very good read. It helped me crystallize a number of ideas about how to organize tasks using simple lists and structures. The over arching theme I took away is that it is important to have a good organized structured to put ideas immediately into and to trust the structure so that one can free one's mind from constant distractions.

What should be put down in this structure are immediate things that are actionable, what one can do next -- as opposed to generalities, which require more thought. A key aspect of course is breaking down a larger task into these smaller actions.

Allen describes a structure of immediate lists to look at, calendars, todo lists, reference lists and so forth. Other bins include an incubator list for long term tasks and a “waiting for” list, which has tasks that are pending from other people to be completed. This seems like a sensible arrangement but I suspect that other people will have somewhat different structures. My impression is that the important idea is not letting immediate short term distractions cloud one's focus on a task, and tackling things sequentially in little chunks.

Allen talks a lot about avoiding infinite loops. He mentions that a long term plan is not something that goes on someone's tickler list but rather something that is broken up into many actions as opposed to only a few. Practically he discusses how in meetings, before the end of the meeting one really should bring up the question of what is the immediate next action that is a follow up from the meeting rather than just talking in generalities.

In the book Allen talks about the importance of having few distractions to really concentrate on the task at hand and one way of achieving fewer distractions is by designing a system to capture all of one's daily input into a well-designed inbox format. He talks about how if this is well done one does not have the guilt of constantly thinking about things that have to be done nor does one have to have the mental load of things constantly popping into one's mind -- given ones assurance that everything is captured in this universal inbox. He contrasts a company that has a way of capturing day-to-day tasks as smoothly running without people being interrupted with one that is constantly crisis and event driven.

I read this book before the new 2015 edition came out. This new edition of course needs to be much updated for the new digital reality. The 2001 edition seems quaint, with its discussion of the correct file folders to use and how to organize things correctly in a close by file cabinet. It makes reference to a Palm Pilot but this seems almost prehistoric in today's age.

That said, I really felt that the lessons in the original 2001 edition were quite timeless. One could easily see how they morphed into using email programs such as Gmail and perhaps even influenced the design of these systems. In fact, it is fascinating trying to connect a lot of the concepts in this book with the modern world of cloud computing, gmail and various online task sites. Many of these online productivity tools mimic very closely a lot of the ideas in Allen's work, particularly gmail's immediate function for archiving things from your inbox and putting various tags and stars on them. It fits very well into a system of de-cluttering your inbox quickly but then coming back to selected bits.

Overall I would highly recommend this book, I think it is a good read.

By Zach Miller
Very good book, I would suggest it to anyone that wants to increase there productivity, wetter they are just a regular person with everyday projects around the house or a project manager overseeing multiple large projects with many employees. It lays out how your brain isn't able to keep track efficiently of multiple projects and all the details without giving you at least a subliminal amount of stress

Good ideas but book is repetitive
By Bas Vodde
"Getting Things Done" is probably the most popular time management book ever written, yet it took me quite a while to read. It wasn't the size as the book is only 250 pages (and it should be less), but I guess I had read too much time management books in the past and figured it would be similar. GTD is similar, yet also different. It feels simpler, more concrete and more bottom-up (the last one raises some worries for me).

The book consists of 3 parts. They are roughly: 1) Overview of GTD, 2) Same more detailed, 3) Same explained from principles. And this also shows my key comment on the book (and I believe other reviewers pointed this out many times also), the book is quite repetitive.

The first part contains 3 chapters. Of these, basically chapter 2 is the overview of the GTD method and is the most important chapter to read. The latest chapters will be mostly a repetition of chapter 2. Chapter 3 discusses project planning and the "natural way of planning" which I found myself a bit less interesting (plus a gross misuse of the term brainstorming).

The second part elaborates on the GTD method and has a chapter of each of the GTD steps: 0) preparing 1) collecting, 2) processing, 3) organizing, 4) reviewing, 5) doing. Each repeats the steps from chapter 2 and then elaborates on them. As the GTD method is fairly simple, most of the elaboration doesn't add very much. The last chapter again makes the side-track to projects (which I think could have been removed from the book).

The last part introduces 3 principles behind GTD 1) Power of Collecting, 2) Power of Next-Action Thinking, 3) Power of Outcome Focusing. Each repeat the same information as earlier chapters, but add a bit more conceptual thinking to it.

Overall, I enjoyed the book despite the repetition. I felt GTD has a lot of good things in it and it definitively tries to keep things simple. I've been at times worried with the bottom-up approach but on the other hand feel the author has a fair point that you can't concentrate on purposes when you are constantly swamped with things. Anyways, I think GTD can help a lot of people gain more control of their life and time, thus a useful book. 4 stars for its repetitiveness though. Recommended to people looking for getting their time a bit better under control.
