Rapp (building construction management technology, Purdue U.) provides advice on the management of post-emergency built infrastructure recovery projects, for practitioners new to the profession who have little actual experience so far. The work is a little different from conventional construction, he says, though that may not be obvious until a manager is in the thick of it. Management and administration are his main focus, and he discusses such aspects as contracts; time, cost, and quality control; communication and documentation; and demobilization and closeout. A section also describes such restoration techniques as fire and smoke restoration, microbial remediation, and disaster debris management and demolition.(Annotation C2011 Book News Inc. About the Author
Randy R. Rapp, D. Mgt., P.E., C.C.E., C.P.C., A.I.C., is associate professor of Building Construction Management Technology at Purdue University and coordinates the disaster restoration and reconstruction management concentration. He has extensive practical experience in the impact of both natural and man-made disasters and has worked in government and commercial contexts. While with Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR), he served in project controls and operations for Hurricane Katrina and logistics management for Hurricane Wilma. He was also the project controls manager and deputy program general manager for the Restore Iraqi Oil program. He is well known as an educator and industry leader. With Edward R. Fisk, he coauthored Introduction to Engineering Construction Inspection (2004). He also contributed to redevelopment of the Certified Restorer credential for the Restoration Industry Association (RIA), and chaired the Government Affairs Committee of the Institute for Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC).

I am hoping to go from IT PM to DRR PM and this book seems to be giving me everything that I need to know. I am only halfway through, but so far it has delivered some great insights and knowledge. I would recommending it to anyone wanting to work in DRR and construction PM.

About the Author
Jean Dr�ze is a Visiting Professor at the Delhi School of Economics and an international authority on development economics. His association with India goes back more than twenty years during which time he has studied the issues in India minutely and has authored many books, research papers, and newspaper articles on education, poverty, development, nuclear doctrine, freedom of information, and the Narmada Struggle. Amartya Sen is the Master of Trinity College, Cambridge, and the winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in Economic Science. He has been President of the Indian Economic Association, the American Economic Association, the International Economic Association, and the Econometric Society. He has taught at Calcutta, Delhi, Oxford, Cambridge, the London School of Economics, and Harvard.

Splendid book

This is possibly THE book you want to read if you want to read ONE book on economic development (or lack thereof) in India. Prof. Sen and Dreze are among the best scholars when it comes to the problems of the Indian subcontinent. Another reviewer seems to completely disregard the fact that this book is not by Sen alone, but it is a result of a joint effort with Jean Dreze. Whoever cares about India and know a bit about the Economics literature on this country will KNOW that Dreze is a first rate scholar who has *literally* devoted his life (professional AND personal) to this country, and disregarding his contribution to this volume is not only wrong but also very disrespectful.

This is a deep, extremely informed, very well written book that anyone who cares about Indian economic, political, and social development should read. Even if both Sen and Dreze are economists (Sen is also a Nobel prize winner), the book is accessible to anyone, as it contains virtually no math or statistics. An outstanding list of references will provide an excellent guide to the reader interested in knowing more about the topics covered here.

Incisive Analysis

The chain is as strong as its weakest link. A nation as rich as its poorest person. Sen understands that no nation can be genuinely proud unless it takes care of basic things like education and offers genuine opportunities to the marginalized. The book is a must read for everyone who are on the 'India Shining' bandwagon. True that the middle class in India is growing, but so is the Maoist threat. Great social engineering by noble souls like Anna Hazare, Bindeshwar Pathak, Baba AMte is the answer. Unfortunately Sen misses that. The book doesnt deal with such solutions. Nevertheless it does deserve 5 stars because it astutely analyzes the existing problem. We need more people like Sen to bring forth the truth.

Sen at his best

This book is Sen at his best. The current 2002 edition is an update of a 1995 edition entitled "India: Economic Development and Social Opportunity." The modification of the title reflects a move to make the notion at the center of Sen's thinking more precise. For those not involved in the public policy debate in India itself, this is the central notion and the real value of Sen's work and finds its best exposition in this broad-ranging, political-economic commentary on development in Sen's native land. By contrast, the exposition it has Sen's more "theoretical" works such as the recent "Rationality and Freedom" is desperately inadequate.
Sen is very much not someone inclined towards a single solution to social problems, or a single rule-of-thumb for such solutions, but there is nevertheless a strong, unitary theme to Sen's commentary.
The discussion (in Chapter 7) of "Gender Equality and Women's Agency" is paradigmatic. It is not only paradigmatic though, for Sen believes that the eradication of the anti-female bias which pervades much of Indian society is itself central to the solution of all the social problems in India in its own right.
Still, in large measure what Sen has to say about how women's oppression in India can be overcome, applies also to what he has to say about the plight of low caste people, people living in poor areas of the country and poverty and oppression in general.
Sen's notion could be summarised by means of a series of five concepts, each of which in turn takes a step closer to the essential notion of what is needed to lead a good life in society: (1) commodities, wealth and value, (2) functioning, (3) capability, (4) voice and finally (5) critical voice.
The problem is that the notion of "critical voice" (subjectivity) cannot be developed within the framework of utilitarian economics and social-choice theory as Sen seems determined to do.

Comprehensive & effective!

The sections all had great practice questions as well as helpful test tips, the answers were well explained in case you missed on, and the practice essays were extremely detailed providing samples of good, mediocre, and bad essays. No problems on test day, I did great.

Good for any level

I am taking the CBEST soon and although I’m fairly confident I’d do well anyway, I like to be sure and like to prepare. I’m glad I did, this book was very helpful. Although I can recall all the concepts, it’s been a while since I’ve used them so it was worthwhile to brush up and get a little practice. I’d recommend this book regardless of where you think you currently stand on the spectrum of preparedness.

About the Author
No writer is more quintessentially American than John Steinbeck. Born in 1902 in Salinas, California, Steinbeck attended Stanford University before working at a series of mostly blue-collar jobs and embarking on his literary career. Profoundly committed to social progress, he used his writing to raise issues of labor exploitation and the plight of the common man, penning some of the greatest American novels of the twentieth century and winning such prestigious awards as the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. He received the Nobel Prize in 1962, "for his realistic and imaginative writings, combining as they do sympathetic humour and keen social perception." Today, more than thirty years after his death, he remains one of America's greatest writers and cultural figures.

Steinbeck wrote the lengthy EAST OF EDEN saga straight through, from January to the first of November, in 1951. Every weekday, he sharpened his beloved pencils, sat down and warmed up, writing in the form of a letter to his friend and publisher, Pascal Covici. The letters he entered on the left side of the manuscript book Covici hand given him; on the right side, after clearing his mind and setting out the days' goals, he'd write his story, averaging about 1,500 words a day. JOURNAL OF A NOVEL collects those daily addresses to Covici, to whom EAST OF EDEN is dedicated.
On the one hand, JOURNAL OF A NOVEL is instructive in how to use journaling to order one's demons, to focus and forge ahead. More important, it brings the reader right up to the man, and Steinbeck is a fascinating person to know. At age 48 when he produced this, he is twice divorced, happily remarried a third time, engaged in fatherhood and transplanted to New York. He is a whittler, a tinkerer, an inventor. His credo is, why pay someone to do something badly that he can do just as badly himself. He maintains an active family, professional and social life that he chattily reports and offers some prescient observations on the Marshall Plan and MacArthur. He is not without his depressive cycles, but at this point in his life he is more understanding of them and never lets them interfere with his work. His resolve is extraordinary.
It is especially rich to read this following WORKING DAYS, the journal he kept as he wrote THE GRAPES OF WRATH. You get a sense of personal growth and a fuller sense of the middle of the 20th century through his eyes.
Highly recommended.

Interesting, but not revealing

I am a major John Steinbeck fan, and rate Mr. Steinbeck as the finest writer in American history. However, I am lukewarm about "Journal of a Novel," Steinbeck's daily account of the trials of writing his most difficult work, East of Eden, from January through October, 1951.
I was hoping that the journal, addressed to his good friend and editor Pascal Covici, would reveal much about Steinbeck the writer and the man.
However, there is very little of the former except repeated brief accounts of the self-doubt and ups and downs a writer endures while creating a long and complex piece of literature. There are only hints of the technical or mental processes involved his writing.
And the same applies to autobiographical information about this period of his life. There is a lot of the trivia of daily life without the real depth of observation and feeling that is shown in other books of his letters.
He was a master at letter writing, and to find and know the real John Steinbeck, I strongly suggest "Steinbeck: A Life in Letters" edited by Elaine Steinbeck and Robert Wallsten.

The things that writers do to get to the point where they can write good fiction are almost as interesting as the novels they create.
If you have ever wondered what the dedication in East of Eden means (or what Steinbeck originally called the book) this is the place to find it. Peek into the relationship between a great writer and his publisher. Marvel as he discusses the problems that come up from day to day during the process of writing (including finding the right kind of pencil).
This book provides a unique insight into what it must be like to live with genius.

Want to get healthy? Do this!!

What I like the best about this CD series is the peacefulness and better health that I now have.
My sister is a clinical psychologist and told me that this Mindfulness CD from the Univ. of Mass. Stress Clinic is excellent for those who need to de-stress, to be much healthier, to be more flexible emotionally and physically, to be stronger, to learn to calm oneself, to breathe to relax and much more. It is the best thing I have EVER done for myself. I do it 6 days a week (at home) now. I went through the whole suggested program. My fav is CD 2 which is 40 mins of yoga. Therapeutic yoga. And I also do the breathing exercises. The body scan is really good, too! I had become allergic to all blood pressure meds this past year, so I needed a way to be able to tone things down so my bp would not rise. This has really helped. Be sure to get a "thick" mat even if you are doing the yoga on a rug. I have half inch mat which I got from Amazon, too. I also have the accompanying book on catastrophic living... it goes with the Cds... If you do this, you will be doing yourself a wonderful favor. I am no spring chicken... if I can do it and benefit from it the way I have, so can you. All the best to you!

Great stress reliever, alternative to anxiety meds

I purchased this CD set along with the terribly titled but fascinating and inspiring book "Full Catastrophe Living", which details his stress reduction program and its benefits and applications. The meditations on this CD make better sense to me after having read the book, but you might still get a lot out of them on their own.

I've tried meditating in the past, but Jon Kabat-Zinn explains it in such a positive, approachable, non-threatening manner that I finally feel as if I CAN meditate, WANT TO meditate, and WILL meditate as a life-long stress management tool. This is not an easy process, but it is attainable.

Bottom line: I definitely feel the difference in my mind and body after I do one of the sessions on these CDs. I am less tense, my mind feels less "noisy", and I sleep better. If you suffer from stress, anxiety, depression, or physical problems - give this a try. If you believe in it and work the program, it really can help.

(And consider getting the book "Full Catastrophe Living", too. By the way, I was drawn to this book after watching a YouTube video of Jon Kabat-Zinn speaking to and leading a meditation session with a group of Google employees: Search for "Mindfulness with Jon Kabat-Zinn in YouTube to watch it.

Bad voice distracts and makes focusing very difficult.

John should have drank water before doing this. All I could hear were his lips clicking as they came unstuck. I could only take 5 minutes of it before giving up. Why he didn't just hire a professional to do this is unknown. I like the idea but it's completely impossible to focus with his terrible mouth and breathing sounds. Perhaps having some background music would help to drone the noises out.

Content and container

I bought this book in July 2013 after conferring with the author via email. I have followed the authors work on uTube and have learned a lot as a result. I was looking forward to getting the book, especially considering the price...my expectations were high. The content--the authors writing style is very comfortable and easy to understand. The written information is useful and easy to employ in the shop. However, my beef with this book is the quality of the book construction and the small, low resolution graphics. The book is spiral bound and on low grade paper. The graphics are all black and white and the how-to graphics are small and very low resolution...this was disappointing (and did I mention how pricey this book is?) So, the informational content is good, the construction of the book and quality of the graphics are not commensurate with the price.

The Pieces Fall into Place in Paradox!

One of the most difficult things for YA writers to do is master the voice of their characters. From the very start of the Travelers series, Ms. Lefeve has handled it beautifully. I continue to love Etta just as much in Paradox as I did in Parallel. She sounds like a real teenager and she's grappling with the same kinds of confusion and feelings that a typical teen would. Except, in Etta's case, they're kicked up a notch. She has things to worry about that even many adults would find hard to take. She has a strong, real girl quality about her that I just love.

This particular book will become central to the series, as we are introduced to the rest of Etta's future team that will help her change the future. Ms. Lefeve is very adept at characterization and introduces us to a colorful group of characters that I think will be interesting, dramatic and fun in the books to come. As she paints the picture of what the future is like, it also gives us an idea as to the enormity of Etta and her team's task.

Paradox is aptly titled, as Ms. Lefeve begins to pull the puzzle together in this book. There are also a few twists, turns, and surprises in Paradox, as well as another cliffhanger that is sure to leave the reader wanting more. I was delighted with this book and will definitely be on the lookout for Book 3!

Gathering the team together...

Parallel, the first book in the Travelers series by Claudia Lefeve, introduced me to the wonderful world of time travel in a mostly modern day setting with a set of believable, realistic characters that you grew to care about over the course of the book. Paradox picks up right where book one left off, with Etta having learned that Cooper was actually tasked with bringing her to her original reality after her father stashed her in a different one for safe-keeping. And what do you know, what crafty spitfire sent her husband Cooper to talk Etta into leaving the reality where she was an orphan? Alternate reality Etta, who is the leader of the uprising, and who also has a team of bad-ass renegades that needs to be assembled like the Justice League so they can begin training for the future assault against her father’s high-ranking government ex-buddy who wants to take over the world.

Etta is learning to use her telekinetic powers more in this book, and while she’s a natural, it does take hard work. She still has to cope with going to school and navigating a strange place that she’s only known for a few weeks, but she’s remaining strong. Of course she has a lot of help from her ever supportive aunt, and having a father around for the first time that she remembers is strange, but it’s Cooper that helps her cope in ways that no one else can.

Ah, Cooper. How strange is it that Etta is traipsing across the country with someone that she’s not only falling in love with, but that she knows she marries in the future? Of course he won’t tell her any of the details of their relationship, and he’s actually the alternate reality Etta’s husband–but the tension between these two is just killer. Etta is a teenager, she knows what she wants–it’s sitting right next to her for most of the book–but she can’t touch. It’s enough to drive anyone crazy.

The character development in this book is great. Etta is really growing into her own–not only is she not the typical whiny teenager often present in so many YA books, she knows that she will have a heavy burden of being a leader in the near future. And she carries that load with grace and anticipation. The new characters introduced as part of her team were fun, distinct, and brought their own unique set of skills to the story. I can’t wait to read the next book to see each of them more fleshed out.

I give Paradox a 4.5 out of 5. It’s really enjoyable to see Etta and Cooper assemble their team and fighting their attraction to each other, all while navigating the tricky landscape that is time travel and the politics that come with the different realities. The unfulfilled tension between Etta and Cooper is the only thing that’s holding me back from giving this one a straight up five, and I can’t wait for Etta to meet her Cooper in book three. And thankfully I won’t have to wait long since Paradigm will be out very soon.

Interesting plot

This is not a book to jump into without having read the first. It is necessary to read the first book in the series before picking this one up. But once you do, the characters are very likable and the storyline flows. I'll be excited to continue reading this series.
