Electrician's Troubleshooting... Good But,
By A Customer
I found the book usefull and full of good infromation. But... the book is not consistant in adressing the skill level of the reader. One moment it goes into great detail for the layman's comprehension. The next moment the book may give short diagnostic instructions, that only someone with a greater knowledge & skill level would undersand. Since the book is the size of a typical paperback, less than an inch thick, space limits it's content. The book would be better if it was more consistant with it's depth of explinations. And/or a terminology and skill glossary

From Publishers Weekly
Fans of the amiable, omniscient Miss Marple will be delighted by the first publication in one volume of all 20 short stories that Christie centered on the elderly sleuth. Wearing her black lace mittens, Miss Marple sits in her chair, knitting and digesting details of murders of all descriptions (from poisonings to a drowning to a shooting by bow and arrow). She manages, of course, to see through all false identities and bogus alibis, and neatly solves each puzzle, no matter how obscure or far-fetched. The bulk of the stories are gathered from The Tuesday Club murders, chronicling the meetings of a group formed by Miss Marple and a handful of her friends. The members take turns recounting mysteries to which they know the answers, while the others take a stab at cracking the cases. Readers will have fun playing along, but beware: Miss Marple is fierce competition. Foreign rights: Hughes Massie. December 2

Review
“Christie’s heart is in her books, speaking to us through her characters just as clearly and forthrightly as she would speak, could she walk into her drawing room and greet a friend.” (Carolyn Hart, Agatha Award-winning author of the Death on Demand mysteries)

From the Back Cover

This collection gathers together every short storyfeaturing one of Agatha Christie’s most famouscreations: Miss Marple. Described by her friendDolly Bantry as “the typical old maid of fiction,”Miss Marple has lived almost her entire life in thesleepy hamlet of St. Mary Mead. Yet, by observingvillage life she has gained an unparalleled insight intohuman nature—and used it to devastating effect. As her friend Sir Henry Clithering, the ex-Commissioner of Scotland Yard, has been heardto say: “She’s just the finest detective God evermade”—and many Agatha Christie fans would agree.

Very Enjoyable
By Debbie
"Miss Marple: The Complete Short Stories" is a collection of twenty short mysteries featuring Miss Marple. Though written as contemporary mysteries, they are now historical mysteries. A few of the stories mentioned a historical (or British) thing where I couldn't figure out what meant. Perhaps this was because they were short stories or because some of them were early in her career. I've never had this problem with Agatha Christie's novels.

The mysteries were clever, and they could be solved. I was a little disappointed that the title of one of the short stories gave away the whodunit. Overall, I'd recommend this book to "puzzle mystery" lovers, especially to Miss Marple fans.

A Superb Collection of Short Stories
By K. Hill
I love the character of Miss Marple. The way she is constantly underestimated never ceases to amuse. Agatha Christie was up to her best when she wrote these stories. Nothing's predictable except that Miss Marple will solve the crime. My favorites in this collection are from The Tuesday Club Murders. None of the stories in this book are very long but with each one I couldn't wait to get to the end and find out who the murderer was. I've read the book twice yet I still couldn't recall or predict who the murder would be in the majority of the stories. Great book!

Harper and Collins
By Kim
The only criticism I have of this book, as it is otherwise completely entertaining, is that there are pages missing. Not that it skips from page 156 to 164 but that there are probably two pages of story line missing from 156 to 157. I'm just issuing this as a warning to anyone who purchases this edition. I will contact Harper and Collins and let them know about this as well.

Journalists in Film: Heroes and Villains, by Brian McNair

We both love and hate our journalists. They are perceived as sexy and glamorous on the one hand, despicable and sleazy on the other. Opinion polls regularly indicate that we experience a kind of cultural schizophrenia in our relationship to journalists and the news media: sometimes they are viewed as heroes, at other times villains. From Watergate to the fabrication scandals of the 2000s, journalists have risen and fallen in public esteem. In this book, leading journalism studies scholar Brian McNair explores how journalists have been represented through the prism of one of our key cultural forms, cinema. Drawing on the history of cinema since the 1930s, and with a focus on the period 1997-2008, McNair explores how journalists have been portrayed in film, and what these images tell us about the role of the journalist in liberal democratic societies. Separate chapters are devoted to the subject of female journalists in film, foreign correspondents, investigative reporters and other categories of news maker who have featured regularly in cinema. The book also discusses the representation of public relations professionals in film.
Illustrated throughout and written in an accessible and lively style suitable for academic and lay readers alike, Journalists in Film will be essential reading for students and teachers of journalism, and for all those concerned about the role of the journalist in contemporary society, not least journalists themselves. An appendix contains mini-essays on every film about journalism released in the cinema between 1997 and 2008.

Pretty good book for a textbook. Great explanation of the history of criminal justice; and the case studies are interesting though there is some noticeable positive bias toward one of the case study subjects on the part of one of the authors. Worth the money however.

Not Yet Up To Eisenhorn And Ravenor Series Standards
By Cypher
I am a major fan of most of Dan Abnett's 40K novels. I believe 'Only In Death' to be an extremely well told sci-fi story irrespective of its sci-fi genre and 'Blood Pact' is one of my favourite novels ever. The Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies are the definitive description of the Inquisition in action. Abnett can bring cinematic vision, memorable characters, beautiful phrasing, a love of words and he also consummately expands the 40K canon - contributing more than any other 40K author.

I have been concerned that more recent works have varied dramatically from the high point of 'Blood Pact.' The sequel, 'Salvation's Reach' was in my view the most implausible plot to outwit a Chaos faction that I have ever read and there is much else about the book to be derided. Thankfully, 'Prospero Burns' was very good overall but not as good as McNeill's interlinking book 'Thousand Sons.' 'Know No Fear' I felt was a step down from 'Prospero Burns' but still a good, if not great, Horus Heresy novel. Added to that his recent short stories have been lacklustre.

I read 'Pariah' with the mixture of hope that it would reinforce the quality of the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies but also with the trepidation that it could be series-impactingly bad as 'Salvation's Reach.' My view is that it comes between these two points. I consider this to be a disappointing start and hope the series gets better.

The novel purports to be the back story of Alizebeth Bequin. By turning to a team member rather than a team leader as the centre of the story Abnett is necessarily limiting the level of knowledge, authority and power that the main character possesses. That is not a flaw but it needs to be taken into account because a review of 'how does this compare to the other Inquisition stories' will be missing the point. This tack may prove more of a problem in the later books when Bequin rises above her initially junior status and we will see if Abnett then has her leading missions on her own.

More of a problem though is that Bequin is uncertain of her identity and the identity of the dizzying array of factions vying to work with her or capture her (or both). This causes much of the novel to be about fleeing from one group into the clutches of another whilst being pursued by several others, not being sure who any of them really are. This is very unsatisfactory and causes the reader to disengage because you know so little about the motivations of the characters you meet, in contrast to the strong team and individual identities in Abnett's better novels.

The city of Queen Mab itself is well detailed with memorable social classes like the Curst (who take sinful actions on behalf of others in penitence) and the Warblind (augmented, battle scarred veterans who live as outcasts in a permanent state of aggression and mental trauma) as well as evocative districts and institutions.

As other reviewers have stated, the premise of the novel as the back story of Bequin the Pariah swiftly becomes open to question as the reader is confronted with chronology that does not fit the expected timeline. This is deliberate and is resolved. I do not like how it is resolved as I found it an unnecessary gimmick and made much of the novel rather unnecessary but that is a matter of taste only. The 'school for pariahs' idea seems to be a big stretch as Abnett's own stories have recounted how vanishingly rare Pariahs are (think of the effort Eisenhorn went to in collecting the Distaff) yet here is a school of them drawn from just one planet. This inconsistency may be resolved by the reveal at the end of the book but is not clear at all that the reveal does sort this problem out and actually the whole story did not need all of the school to be Pariahs anyway.

The novel certainly lacked cinematic moments with the exception of the appearance of one dangerous adversary. There are many disappointing scenes, of the many big chases, one is around a massive cathedral that felt like a retread of the recent 'Angel of Fire.' Another chase scene around a dilapidated mansion has a massively powerful adversary blundering around in an improbable way that diminished that character. Yet another adversary group wields weapons better left in the Chuckie movies and this felt really unoriginal (and very prolonged too). I also thought the discovery that a minor shop owner was in fact head of one of the oldest noble houses in the sector that was capable of securing prohibited items for very powerful families to be implausible, we have seen how Abnett can demonstrate the temporal power of noble houses and it did not previously involve manning the cash register. I found each of the factions, other than the two we are aware of from the front cover, to be thinly drawn due to the problem of the narrative perspective and as a result quite uninteresting (and putting to one side the very questionable presence of their powerful hidden allies too). It is very refreshing when we finally meet the pre-existing characters once more and the books gains markedly from that point.

I fervently hope this series gains a lot more quality in the next release as I felt it was overall rather bland and un-engaging. As a big fan, these are not terms I associate with Dan Abnett at all. I hope those that enjoyed the novel more than me and therefore disagree with my rating do not down vote this as I have tried to explain why my feelings diverge from theirs.

Cliffhanger ending, a new perspective.
By John
I am not one to review books, I just read them. However this book was so unique compared to the other inquisition books I came to see what others thought of it and why.

Let me just say this book is very different from the other two series in that, for the first time, we are not seeing things from the perspective of a super powerful inquisitor with vast abilities and a good command of the situation. This is written from the peon's point of view, all be it a potentially very powerful peon. Beta, the main character, has no idea what is going on anymore than the reader does. In contrast you always figured Ravenor and Eisenhorn had a secret plan behind what you were reading...in fact I often was reading gleefully looking forward to how that plan would unfold. Beta has no such plan she is caught in the middle of several conflicting plans and parties and just trying to survive. Ravenor wasn't always right but he always had more information and control of a situation than this main character does. It makes for a different flavor of novel.

Another difference that I really had to think about was the time frame. Ravenor and Eisenhorn sometimes had months or even years between books and chapters. Beta barely has time to sleep in this book. After the first two or three chapters the rest of the book rolls at a pace that has never been attempted in an Inquisition book or even a Dan Abnett book to my knowledge. You see the hands of all these groups and the tapestry of long drawn out plans and conspiracies, but always through the frantic eye of someone on the ground trying to survive one more hour.

It should also be noted that the end of this book doesn't leave you with many answered questions. You will probably have guessed already the major revelations, and indeed you are suppose to be able to do so, such as the nefarious nature of Beta's origin and the fact that some of her fellowship are not nice people. But honestly, those predictable revelations aside, it is definitely a cliff hanger ending leaving a lot to be answered.

What it does have in common with the other two series is
- A very up close take on the decaying urban hell that a human city in Warhammer 40k
- A guest appearance by powerful beings from the Warhammer Mythos, without letting them take over the story.
- The mystery/thriller combination of back room draconian dealings of the Inquisition, the force for good that often does very bad things to reach its objective.
- Secret evil forces of Chaos abound.

I think it is a more than promising start. I love the allusions to prior works, 40k fans will find plenty of eastereggs and cameos that make it worth reading as part of the larger 40k universe, however nothing is shoe horned in. This starts a little slow but doesn't slow down once it starts.

Great book? Yes. Worthy successor to Eisenhorn? Not yet.
By Blue Wild Angel
Let me be clear. The Eisenhorn triology are among my favorite books ever; not just 40k novels. I have read them at least 5 times. Gregor Eisenhorn is, in my opinion, one of the most compelling characters I've ever read about. The Ravenor series was fantastic as well, but all the while I was hoping beyond hope for good old Gregor to show up in more than a passing reference.

MINOR SPOILERS FOLLOW! CONTINUE AT YOUR OWN PERIL!

The whole draw to this new series, dubbed "The Bequin Trilogy," was to find out Alizabeth Bequin's origins, and what happened to her following the Eisenhorn and Ravenor books. I will only say this: the "twist" over who the protagonist actually is left me feeling duped. Tricked. Manipulated. Did I still care for her? Sure I did. But the whole reason I was so looking forward to this book was because I wanted more about the real Bequin.

Also, for the majority of the book, the characters from Eisenhorn and Ravenor were left in the dark, merely being shadow players. The eventual return of Gregor Eisenhorn, while triumphant and engrossing, came far too late. In the meantime, we follow Beta running from one group to the next, without truly caring about anyone with the exception of Renner Lightburn, her Curst bodyguard, and Deathrow, the Warblind chief.

Now, this is a good book. A great book, even. Mr. Abnett is one of the best writers out there, and he is at the top of his game here. The atmosphere is incredibly vivid through his intricate descriptions, and the action sequences play out better than some of the best action movies. Sometimes, however, I felt that he got a little to wrapped up in the minutiae, but that could have been just me thinking his taking time away from a possible cameo by Gregor and his gang.

Is the story compelling? Absolutely. Fantastically thought out, he brings back old enemies (the Cognitae, and another that felt like a bit of a waste but I'll let your surprise be complete), and puts a new spin on it. One aspect of the city Queen Mab that I found very compelling was "the Warblind," veterans that were genetically and chemically altered to be berserkers without off-switches. They live in a permanently enraged, bloodthirsty state, roaming in gangs within the undercity. The chieftain of one of these gangs (or so we're led to believe) is the hulking, broadsword wielding Deathrow and his trusty canine friend. He is a fantastic character, one doesn't quite get the development he deserves (but I am sure will be back in the next two books).

When Gregor and the gang finally show up and become major players, it was pure joy. FINALLY! WHAT I BOUGHT THE BOOK FOR! His return is something to behold, and the fight scene is wonderfully satisfying. From there on out, it was what I hoped the first two-thirds of the book were.

I sincerely hope the next few books bring back our Lizzie in the way we all wanted. But I can't truly fault this book for that alone. It was a great read, and I have great expectations for the next one.

Late Victorian Holocausts: El Nio Famines and the Making of the Third World, by Mike Davis

Bestselling, magisterial melding of global environmental history and global political history. Winner of the World History Association Book Award.

Examining a series of El Niño-induced droughts and the famines that they spawned around the globe in the last third of the 19th century, Mike Davis discloses the intimate, baleful relationship between imperial arrogance and natural incident that combined to produce some of the worst tragedies in human history.

Late Victorian Holocausts focuses on three zones of drought and subsequent famine: India, Northern China; and Northeastern Brazil. All were affected by the same global climatic factors that caused massive crop failures, and all experienced brutal famines that decimated local populations. But the effects of drought were magnified in each case because of singularly destructive policies promulgated by different ruling elites.

Davis argues that the seeds of underdevelopment in what later became known as the Third World were sown in this era of High Imperialism, as the price for capitalist modernization was paid in the currency of millions of peasants’ lives.

From Publishers Weekly
While this book will not have the impact of Davis's City of Quartz--a scathing indictment of L.A.'s environmental ravagement, economic disparity and racial divides--in a perfect world, it would. Its subject is nothing less than the creation of what we now call "The Third World," through a complex series of seemingly disparate natural and market-related events beginning in the 1870s. Davis dives into the data and journalism of the period with a vengeance, showing that the seemingly unprecedented droughts across northern Africa, India and China in the 1870s and 1890s are consistent with what we now know to be El Ni¤o's effects, and that it was political and market forces (which are never impersonal, Davis insists), and not a lack of potential stores and transportation, that kept grain from the more than 50 million people who starved to death. Chapters brilliantly reconstruct the political, economic, ecological and racial climate of the time, as well as the horrific deaths by hunger and thirst that besieged the peasantries of the afflicted c0untries. As in City of Quartz, Ecology of Fear and Magical Urbanism, Davis's synthetic powers, rendering mountains of data into an accessible and cogent form, are matched by his acid castigations of the murders and moral failings that have attended the advance of capitalism, and by cogent detours into the work of journalists and theorists who have come before him, decrying injustice and rallying the opposition. (Feb.)Forecast: Although this book's historical subject seems vastly removed from contemporary American life, it may get some media attention for its El Ni¤o-based arguments. City of Quartz still guarantees review attention for any Davis project, which may draw history buffs who haven't heard of him. His substantial core readership will seek out the book either way, and the book's synthesis of hardcore data will also hold appeal for poli-sci syllabi and university libraries.

Review
“Davis has given us a book of substantial contemporary relevance as well as great historical interest … this highly informative book goes well beyond its immediate focus.”
—Amartya Sen, New York Times

“Davis’s range is stunning … He combines political economy, meteorology, and ecology with vivid narratives to create a book that is both a gripping read and a major conceptual achievement. Lots of us talk about writing ‘world history’ and ‘interdisciplinary history’: here is the genuine article.”
—Kenneth Pomeranz, author of The Great Divergence

“The global climate meets a globalizing political economy, the fundamentals of one clashing with the fundamentalisms of the other. Mike Davis tells the story with zest, anger, and insight.”
—Stephen J. Pyne, author of World Fire

“Davis, a brilliant maverick scholar, sets the triumph of the late-nineteenth-century Western imperialism in the context of catastrophic El Niño weather patterns at that time ... This is groundbreaking, mind-stretching stuff.”
—Independent

“Late Victorian Holocausts will redefine the way we think about the European colonial project. After reading this, I defy even the most ardent nationalist to feel proud of the so-called ‘achievements’ of empire.”
—Observer

“Devastating.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

“Generations of historians largely ignored the implications [of the great famines of the late nineteenth century] and until recently dismissed them as ‘climatic accidents’ … Late Victorian Holocausts proves them wrong.”
—Los Angeles Times (Best Books of 2001)

“Wide ranging and compelling … a remarkable achievement.”
—Times Literary Supplement

“A masterly account of climatic, economic and colonial history.”
—New Scientist

“A hero of the Left, Davis is part polemicist, part historian, and all Marxist.”
—Dale Peck, Village Voice

“The catalogue of cruelty Davis has unearthed is jaw-dropping … Late Victorian Holocausts is as ugly as it is compelling.”
—Sukhdev Sandhu, Guardian

“Controversial, comprehensive, and compelling, this book is megahistory at its most fascinating—a monument to times past, but hopefully not a predictor of future disasters.”
—Foreign Affairs

“Devastating.”
—San Francisco Chronicle

sui generis
By P. Hung
A sui generis history of mysterious meteorological cycles, the impact of international market integration on agrarian societies, and the tragedy of 30 to 60 million starved dead whose absence as an accumulated population from collective memory belies their importance in the scope of Europe's imperial ambitions. Harrowing, terrifying, important, and I hope not a harbinger of climate change impacts on global food security.

Climate change in the real world
By Richard Reese (author of Understanding Sustainability)
In the years 1876-1879 and 1896-1902 between 12.2 and 29.3 million died of famine in India. In the years 1876-1879 and 1896-1900 between 19.5 and 30 million died of famine in China. In the same period, an estimated 2 million died in Brazil. Famine hit these three nations the hardest, but many other nations were also affected. In the US, churches organized to send relief to hungry farmers in the Dakotas and western Kansas.

Mike Davis wrote about these famines in his book Late Victorian Holocausts. The famines occurred in regions slammed by severe drought. The droughts have been linked to the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO), a major factor in global weather patterns.

Droughts have been common throughout history, and agricultural societies have commonly prepared for them by creating emergency reserves of stored grain. Because of political shifts in many regions, these safety nets were in poor condition during the late Victorian droughts. In the wake of the Industrial Revolution came a new mode of economic thinking that frowned on setting aside significant wealth for insurance against disaster. It was more profitable to sell the grain today, pocket the cash, and worry about tomorrow's problems tomorrow. Peasants were expendable.

The Qing dynasty in China believed that subsistence was a human right, and it had relief management systems in place to reduce the toll of famines during drought years or floods. By the late Victorian era, conflicts with colonial powers had drained the wealth of the Qing government, so it was incapable of effectively responding to the catastrophic droughts.

Prior to the British colonization of India, the Moguls had a similar system for responding to famine. The British, on the other hand, were cruel masters (as they had been during the 1845 famine in Ireland). Food was widely available, but few could afford the inflated prices. While millions were starving, they exported Indian wheat. They outlawed donations of private relief. They forbid the Pariahs from foraging for forest foods, leading to 155,000 deaths. They created relief camps where the starving received inadequate rations, and 94 percent died. Very civilized chaps, eh?

The hungry hordes in Brazil were the victims of their own corrupt government, which had disposed of grain reserves. Brazil was not a colony of Britain, but English investors and creditors played a powerful role in the economy, turning Brazil into an "informal colony" that was kept permanently in debt.

Davis argued that the millions of deaths were largely a deliberate "holocaust" rather than a spell of bad luck, because political actions were a primary factor behind the high mortality rates. He also argued that this holocaust played a role in the creation of the Third World. In the eighteenth century, Europe did not have the highest standard of living. The biggest manufacturing districts were in India and China. Their workers ate better, had lower unemployment, and often earned more than workers in Europe. Literacy rates were higher, including women.

One of Davis's primary objectives was to spank capitalism, colonialism, and the hideous overseers of the British Empire. There has been lively discussion in the reader feedback at Amazon, and a number of critics have questioned the way in which Davis assigned blame for the massive famines. For me, the book had important messages: (1) Droughts happen. (2) Agricultural societies are highly vulnerable to droughts. (3) Famines commonly follow droughts. (4) Famines can be horrific.

When rains ended an Indian drought in 1878, the mosquito population exploded, and hundreds of thousands of malnourished survivors died of malaria. Meanwhile, locusts gobbled up the growing young plants. Hungry peasants murdered many creditors who threatened foreclosure. Then came gangs of armed tax collectors. Hungry wild animals became very aggressive, dragging away the weak, screaming. In the Madras Deccan, "the only well-fed part of the local population were the pariah dogs, `fat as sheep,' that feasted on the bodies of dead children."

In China, the flesh of the starved was sold at markets for four cents a pound. People sold their children to buy food. Husbands ate their wives. Parents ate their children. Children ate their parents. Thousands of thieves were executed. At refugee camps, many perished from disease. If too many refugees accumulated, they were simply massacred. In some regions, relief took more than a year to arrive.

Davis's vivid and extensive descriptions of famine times remind an increasingly obese society that we are living in a temporary and abnormal bubble of cheap and abundant calories. Importantly, he puts a human face on the consequences of climate change, a subject usually presented in purely abstract form: parts per million, degrees Celsius, and colorful computer-generated charts, graphs, and maps.

Near the end of the book, Davis gives us a big, fat, juicy discussion on the history of agriculture and ecological catastrophe in China. People who remain in denial about the inherent destructiveness of agriculture typically point to China as a glowing example of 4,000 years of happy sustainable low-impact organic farming. Wrong, wrong, wrong! This chapter provides a powerful cure for those who suffer from such embarrassing naughty fantasies.

The late Victorian droughts happened at a time when the world population was less than 1.4 billion. Today, it's over 7 billion, and growing by 70 million per year. Cropland area per capita is shrinking, and soil health is diminishing. Energy prices are rising, and water usage for irrigation is foolishly unsustainable. We're getting close to Peak Food. World grain production per capita peaked in 1984, at 342 kilograms per person. World grain stocks (stored grain) peaked in 1986, and have been declining since then.

On 24 July 2012, the venerable Lester Brown of the Earth Policy Institute published a warning in The Guardian. "The world is in serious trouble on the food front." World grain stocks are currently "dangerously low." "Time is running out. The world may be much closer to an unmanageable food shortage -- replete with soaring food prices, spreading food unrest, and ultimately political instability -- than most people realize."

For me, the main message of this book was a powerful warning about the huge risks of agriculture, and its insanely destructive companion, overpopulation. The famines discussed in this book were not a freak event in history. Famine has been a common, normal, periodic occurrence in virtually all agricultural societies, from the Cradle of Civilization to today.

As the collapse of industrial civilization proceeds and life slows down, opportunities to live more in balance with nature will emerge. Clever societies will carefully limit population size, and phase out their dependence on farming. Un-clever societies will continue to breed like there's no tomorrow, beat their ecosystems to death, and hippity-hop down the Dinosaur Trail.

The History of a Not So Natural Disaster
By Lionel S. Taylor
So much of the history of the third world just presents the desperate living conditions as something that has always existed in that part of the world and always will. It is so well know and described that it is just assumed that there is nothing that can be done about it and that it is the fault of the tropical environment and the backwards people that live in it. Davis's Late Victorian Holocausts shows that this is not the case at all. Yes there have been devastating long-term droughts and excessive rainfall that has made farming and life in general very difficult in these areas. But it is not acts of God that deserve the blame for the wide spread deaths in these areas. As Davis argues very clearly these societies have dealt with droughts and monsoons for centuries and had an infrastructure set up to deal with it. This infrastructure was dismantled (more often than not deliberately) by imperial forces that set up a system for maximum wealth extraction from these regions. As Davis demonstrates especially in the case of India, the development that was done was not done for the benefit of the people but rather for the extraction of wealth. Late Victorian Holocausts also does a very good job of debunking assumptions that China and India are burdened by their excessive populations and that this is to blame for most of their economic underdevelopment. But the fact is these countries have dealt with these issues for a long time and had the infrastructure to deal with it.
Davis does an excellent job of opening the book with an interesting and relevant antecedent of former president Grant's travels thorough some of the drought stricken areas. And while the book is an academic book, it is well written and is not a bad read for the general reader either. If there was one complaint that I had about the book it is that the 3rd part dealing with deciphering El Nino climate patterns was way too much and really not relevant to the rest of the book. If the author's main argument is that the main source of the famine problems was manmade policy decisions rather than climate, why bother spending 40 pages on an exhaustively detailed description of how El Nino was discovered. In fact, after discussing it in those sections it is only referred to in passing thorough out the rest of the book. I would recommend that unless you are just fascinated with climate science you just skim this section it will not take away from the overall argument of the book. This one shortcoming aside this is a fascinating and well written book and I definitely recommend it.
