It illustrates the fundamental issues of credit and credit analysis in a manner that tries to take away its mystery. The overriding theme of this book is that when an investor extends credit of any type, the goal is “to get your money back”, and with a return that is commensurate with the risk. The goal of credit analysis is not to make “yes or no” decisions about the extension of credit, but to identify the degree of risk associated with a particular obligor or a particular credit instrument. This is consistent with modern banking industry portfolio management and the rating systems of credit agencies. Once the “riskiness” of an obligor or credit instrument is established, it can be priced or structured to match the risk demands or investment criteria of the entity that is extending the credit. A simple quote from Mr. J. P. Morgan is used often in this text - “Lending is not based primarily on money or property. No sir, the first thing is character”. This statement represents one of the conflicts in modern credit analysis – that of models for decision making versus traditional credit analysis. The 2008 financial crisis was rooted in the mortgage backed securities business. Sophisticated models were used by investors, banks, and rating agencies to judge the credit worthiness of billions (and maybe trillions) of dollars worth of residential mortgage loans that were packaged into securities and distributed to investors. The models indicated that these securities would have very low losses. Of course, huge losses were incurred. Mr. Morgan had a good point. In this case is was both property and character. The properties that were the collateral for many of the mortgages had much less value than was anticipated. The valuation of the collateral was na�ve and flawed. Many assumptions were made that the value of homes would rise without pause. Many mortgage loans were made that were at or even above the appraised value of a residence. But character was a huge, perhaps larger, factor behind these losses. Many of the residential mortgage loans were made to individuals who knew that they did not have the income to make the required payments on the mortgages. Many of the mortgage brokers and lenders who made these loans also knew that many of the borrowers were not properly qualified. And, many of the bankers who securitized these loans also may have doubted the credit quality of some of the underlying mortgages. If bankers and rating agencies understood the extent of the fraud and lax standards in the fundamental loans backing the mortgage securities, or were willing to acknowledge it, the fiasco would not have occurred.

This is one of the best books on Credit and Credit Analysis I have read in a recent while. Most that I read were full of very difficult and not easy to comprehend "mumbo- jumbo". Not this one, Arnold has endeavoured to make it an easy read even for novice banker/ or student of banking. The book is not intimidating to the aspiring Credit Analyst either. He has made transfer of Credit skills and knowledge a pleasant journey for the reader. I highly recommend it to any one who wants to acquire Credit Analysis skills, or those seasoned bankers who want a refresher on credit.

Concise book on the (often forgotten) fundamentals of sound corporate credit analysis

It is a concise by quite readable and informative book on the basics of corporate credit analysis. It may serve as an introduction for novice analysts and as a refresher for seasoned lenders – a guide that gets back to the basics of fundamental credit analysis. Although you won’t find here a detailed description of different types of credit instruments or specific analytical tools (ratios, differences in lending rationales behind the generic types of loans – seasonal, permanent WC loans, term loans, the way you use free cash flow to ascertain the capacity to repay, etc.), you will be reminded the fundamental principles of a sound credit culture which sometimes get lost among the often pseudo-scientific mathematical models some lenders use in place of, not as an addition to the fundamental credit analysis of each obligor. Dear Mr. Ziegel – I am looking forward to another book of yours where you could continue the journey to the credit analysis land and expand the topics of analytical tools / approaches, different credit analysis aspects of different types of loans depending on the needs being financed (seasonal and permanent WC needs, investment loans, etc.) and include the common dilemmas as e.g. how to cope with the fact that lenders often do not expect repayment of loans (usually WC loans) as long as the borrower remains sound and has the capacity to repay but demand repayment as soon as the client deteriorates and potentially loses the repayment capacity, thus using their "licence to kill".

Steve Ryan, PhD, is a former A-Fib patient, a noted healthcare educator and advocate for patients with Atrial Fibrillation. Informative, but missing a key component for me!

I purchased this book after several hospitalizations and my getting a diagnosis of lone A-Fib. My cardiologist was very little help to me with answering my questions and he gave me next to nothing concrete to pursue a better quality of life with A-Fib, and the scare of having heart surgery (ablation)sent me searching elsewhere(that's not an option for me).

Yes, the book was easy to read and comprehend (though I am a retired RN) and there were many first-hand accounts from A-Fib sufferers, but it left me hanging dry in the way of any alternative direction, opposed to a possible nutritional deficiency and surgical procedures. Apart from the medication aspect which was covered in detail, I'm pretty sure that every one of the stories told chose surgery as their main option. You mean apart from Big Pharma, ablation and surgical procedures no one has conquered A-Fib? Where are their stories?

I refused to believe that those surgical procedures were the only ways to correct or solve my problem. So, while reading "Beat Your A-Fib" I gained insight into the typical patterns of patients and their treatments and the variety of surgical "cures," I felt very let down . . . none of their scenarios were what I was looking or hoping for! In fact, after reading it I became terrified of the pattern that those horrid episodes would only grow closer and closer together, and for me, that pattern seemed to be the case-- 4 mos., 3 mos., 2 mos., etc. So, I sought a consult with a Naturopathic MD. Yes! There were some answers and new supplements that could make a difference and I'm thrilled that they seem to be working! It's been five months since the last episode and I've had no episodes since I've been on the regimen scoped out for me. I feel great! Of course, time will continue to tell, but I just want to shout out that you can seek alternatives--a naturopathic way of thinking could be of great value to you with your A-Fib!

BTW, Chapter 5 mentions mineral deficiencies and supplementation--potassium and magnesium are very important, (my blood work was all fine). Where are the stories of those that found a cure by strictly going this route? Listed are some supplements like CoQ10, Vit. C, taurine and hawthorne berry, but why did this discussion not continue, with dosages and therapies that work for people? Some of the main supplements that my ND recommended and worked for me are: hawthorne solid extract 1/4 tsp 2XDay, convallaria (lily of the valley) 8-10 gtts in water 2XDay and L-taurine 1000mg 2XDay, plus adding additional magnesium (covered in the book).

I gave it 3 stars for leaving out an important option (for me) and not going into more detail and for not including pertinent patient stories from those taking a medication/supplemental route alone.

Terrific book for anyone with a-fib, or who knows someone with it

Even though atrial fibrillation (a-fib) is the most common arrhythmia, afflicting more and more people every year, most people know very little about it. Anyone who ends up with atrial fibrillation suddenly finds his or her life turned upside down, often unable to perform even simple activities without suffering shortness of breath and extreme fatigue. I know because I was first diagnosed with a-fib 40 years ago. Unfortunately, most a-fib sufferers end up having to blindly select a physician to treat their a-fib without knowing whether that physician will choose the best course of treatment, or even one that is safe or effective. Thankfully, this book gives a-fib sufferers and their families the knowledge needed to find a physician and take part in selecting a course of treatment that has a high probability of achieving a cure. Many new methods of treatment have been developed during the past ten years that have high success rates at curing a-fib. Unfortunately, many physicians, and even cardiologists and electrophysiologists, are not aware of these new approaches. This book compares a-fib treatments, including the most recent ones, in terminology that is easy to understand, but also in a way that enables patients to speak intelligently with their physicians, enabling the patient to become an active partner in their own health-care decisions. The book also lays out a course of action, a roadmap, for patients to follow in taking control of their a-fib. I know that this roadmap works because it is the one I followed in finding an electrophysiologist and choosing a treatment for my a-fib. After years of suffering with a-fib I am now free of it and able to engage in any physical activity I wish, thanks to Steve Ryan, the author of this book. Based on my experience, I highly recommend this book to anyone who has a-fib and who is not happy with his or her quality of life. This book will definitely show you how to work toward finding a cure for your a-fib.

A superb guide to atrial fibrillation

I suffered from lone atrial fibrillation (atrial fibrillation without underlying heart disease) for 15 years before finally finding my cure through a catheter ablation carried out by Pr. Jais in Bordeaux, France. During those 15 years I did a substantial amount of research trying to find a cure on my own. I did not succeed, but many afibbers I know, if not cured, have at least managed to keep their afib under control by eliminating common triggers such as alcohol and caffeine, and through dealing with underlying causes such as electrolyte imbalances, sleep apnea, inappropriate diets, excessive exercise, hyperaldosteronism (Conn's syndrome) or by switching to a more appropriate medication for their particular form of lone afib (adrenergic, vagal or mixed).

I believe the most important point that every newly-diagnosed afibber must understand is that, although having atrial fibrillation can ruin your quality of life, it is not, by itself, life-threatening. Once this is firmly established in the mind of the afibber he/she can move forward in search of a cure and avoid making hasty or ill-advised decisions regarding treatment. This is where Steve Ryan's new book "Beat Your A-fib: The Essential Guide to Finding Your Cure" will be of tremendous help. First of all it offers HOPE. Hope that you need not be afflicted by this miserable condition for the rest of your life. Steve's book covers all the basics like "How serious is this illness?" , "How did I get it and why does it keep recurring?" , "What tests are needed to properly diagnose the condition?" Equally important, "Beat Your A-fib" covers all the angles regarding treatment from drugs to surgery and last, but certainly not least, provides invaluable advice on how to find a knowledgeable and competent physician (electrophysiologist). Rounding off the book are 16 personal afib journeys helping you to see that afib need not be a lifelong sentence of misery but that a cure is possible. About the only criticism of "Beat Your A-fib" is that the author(s) do not sufficiently distinguish between "common" atrial fibrillation and lone atrial fibrillation. They really are two quite distinct entities with different causes, vastly different stroke risks (lone afibbers have no excess stroke risk attributable to the disorder as such), and significantly different long-term prognosis.

Good, not great

It's a For Dummies book, which tells you what you are getting into. If you have owned a Canon dSLR before (and I think few people start off with the 5D Mark III), then the first few chapters won't help you all that much. The book does a good job of going over functionality, as well as tips for exposure and composition, but this is not an Advanced book. While the author's tone is funny and clear, there are certain topics that are not covered in enough depth. For example, while the HDR functionality is covered clearly, the other Multiple Exposure settings are basically ignored.

Definitely a good book if you just got your 5d III, but if you are a pro (and you probably are) there are probably books that are more detailed.

A great resource for the 5Diii owner

I'm a huge fan of the Dummies books especially as a supplement to the OEM manual. I wisely chose to buy one for my first DSLR and it was great source to refer to as I grew into my camera and was able to understand its more advanced features. If you want simple explanations, tips and an easy on the eyes layout, this book meets those needs. I bought another book that was highly recommended in addition to this one for the 5Diii and I'd have to say that although this book comes in a close second, it is definitely adequate if you only wanted one 5Diii reference. The 5Diii for Dummies is a great book for newer or less experienced photographers and has plenty of use for the more experienced. If you're less experienced plan on having your camera next to you as you read this book. That's the best way to learn how to navigate the many menu settings and operations of this or any camera. Don't concern yourself with memorizing and understanding everything at first read. The 5Diii is a pro level DSLR and you'll have to re-read and refer back to this book until some of the more intricate features sink in. Some features may be out of your interest or comprehension for now but as you grow you'll find yourself referring back to this book for reference.

This is a very helpful book. I love it.

I bought this book before I bought my Canon 5d Mark III. I really wanted the 5D but was a little bit intimidated by the awesomeness of it. After looking over this book I knew that I could understand and use the 5D. I ordered the 5D and began to start learning about this amazing camera. Mr. Cordell wrote this book in a way that anyone could understand it and use the 5D. The book is written in such a way that you can pick out certain chapters and learn them or you can start at the beginning and learn as you go. I cannot believe how much this book has helped me. Great homework book to go along with the Canon 5D.

About the Author

Joan Littlefield Cook teaches in the Psychology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. As an undergraduate she majored in Psychology at Tennessee Technological University. She earned a Ph.D. in Psychology and Human Development at Vanderbilt University. Over the last 18 years she has taught courses related to child and adolescent development, educational psychology, and cognitive psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Middle Tennessee State University. Her classes have ranged from large lecture courses (with 300 or more students) to small seminars. Students have always appreciated her knowledge of the field and her ability to present information in a way that is useful, motivating, and friendly. In fact, the Student Association at the University of Wisconsin-Madison voted her as one of their most outstanding professors.�Joan's research is on mathematical problem solving and cognitive development. She and her colleagues have published paperrs in the Journal of Educational Psychology, Intelligence, Cogition & Instruction, Memory & Cognition, the Gifted Child Quarterly, and the Journal of Experimental Psychology. She has co-authored two other books and numerous instructional materials.

�

Greg Cook also teaches Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. He majored in Psychology at the University of Dayton and later received his Ph.D. in Psychology at Vanderbilt University. For the last 18 years he has taught courses in child development, research methods, statistics, and related topics at Whitewater as well as at the Madison and Richland Center campuses in the University of Wisconsin system and Vanderbilt University. At Whitewater, he received a departmental award for excellence in teaching. Students consistently comment on his ability to present difficult information in a clear and understandable way. His research in cognitive development ahs been published in scholarly journals such as Child Development, Developmental Psychology, and the Journal of Experimental Child Psychology. He also collaborated with colleagues in the College of Education on studies published in the Journal of Experimental Education, the Journal of Research & Development in Education, and the Journal of Reading Education.

Buyer Beware. "Acceptable Condition" has many interpretations.

Absolutely HORRIBLE CONDITION. 1/3 of the cover was torn off, there was a spot of "sticky" stuff on the cover, stickers on the book.
I've bought several books for my kids for school through Amazon, and most have been very good to great. This one was a complete fail - Very dissatisfied.

I was very disappointed in it's appearance

The product I got and what was advertised had some differences. I got the same book but the cover was disappointing. It was plain without the logo and very untidy. I was very disappointed in it's appearance. Content is same so I was comforted but I felt the seller did not represent the product as it was.
