Meanwhile, there is another story line involving gun smuggling that eventually intersects with the cop killing, making for a thoughtful look at gun laws in New Jersey that, in light of the Sandy Hook massacre, becomes even more compelling and disturbing. Amazing!

This book was so good, I loved the story and Carter Ross' sense of humor. On pages 94-107 I was actually laughing out loud (I never do that)! His references to Paul/Powell was just so funny. Brad Parks, you are an awesome writer and I have enjoyed all of your books!!

Laugh out loud funny

I love this series with Carter Ross, the intrepid newspaper reporter in Newark, N.J. Carter is a nice guy. You could invite him over dinner and be entertained. He is, also, a very good reporter and stumbles into a mystery of two dead cops who supposedly committed suicide. His investigation takes him all over Newark and into strange places. He visits a warehouse/store that is so laugh out loud funny that tears rolled out of my eyes.

I don't know what it is NJ that produces such funny detectives. Carter is a breath of fresh of air with innovative plots. He's got a great supporting cast of characters including a boss who wants to have his baby. Why is it never sex discrimination when it goes the other way? I digress.

If you're looking for a good mystery that is fun, you can't go wrong with this one. Pour yourselves a nice beverage and enjoy the time you spend with Carter Ross. It's a great way to spend the day.

THE GOOD COP is the fourth book in Brad Parks's mystery series and will emerge as a terrific summer read

Brad Parks draws Newark, New Jersey and the Newark-Eagle Examiner as if they are characters in his novel, THE GOOD COP. His protagonist, investigative reporter Carter Ross, tells in the first person the story in which he becomes embroiled, a device that allows readers to really get to know him. As he introduces himself, Carter says that his job does not require him to get to the office at any particular time before 11ish am.

So when his phone rings and wakes him up at 8:30am, Carter is very disgruntled. He grudgingly takes the call, which comes from the newsroom. On the other end is Kate Mossman, "one of the editors on what was formally called `the Nonstop Newsdesk...to feed the insatiable content beast that is the [paper's] Web site." She is trying to tell him that a policeman has been shot; he is immediately fully awake and "grabbed his notepad." This is definitely his news story.

The cop is Detective Sergeant Darius Kipps, and he was attached to the Fourth Precinct, which Carter says he "knew well." But instead of going to the station, he decides to check the property records; he finds that even though Darius had several addresses, it seemed that he lived in East Orange with his wife, Naomi. Carter decides that while other reporters can cover the detective and his death, he is going to visit the widow. Even though he doesn't know all of the tertiary facts, he feels that the widow is the best one to interview. He tells readers that a policeman killed in New Jersey will "attract the attention of every television and radio station in the Greater New York area."

As he is knocking on her door, Carter ruminates about how difficult and stressful this kind of visit could be. But in the end, he rationalizes his way into saying that words can be uplifting and "they can provide hope. They even comfort a grieving family." Carter is surprised to find the house full of black women who clearly are there to comfort Naomi. They are both curious and hostile when he is introduced to them. Mimi (her nickname) also shows him her newborn and tells him how much her husband had wanted a boy.

As Carter is working the story and his contacts, he gets a call from his editor that the story is not going to happen. Darius committed suicide. From what Carter has learned from his associates and family, he does not believe that the cop was dirty. Fusco, his policeman friend, almost breaks Carter in two when he bravely suggests that if he was, that would be a motive. NO WAY!! Fusco is adamant.

While readers are immersed in this convoluted suicide/murder, another subplot emerges: gun running. Parks introduces this as a crime with which dirty cops are involved. They are the brains behind bringing the merchandise into New Jersey and wherever the money is. Carter gets involved in this investigation too, even before it is a legitimate case.

THE GOOD COP is the fourth book in Brad Parks's mystery series and will emerge as a terrific summer read. His writing is easy to read, and the complicated cases he foists upon Carter Ross are helping him grow as a hero. Readers will find themselves happily going along with him as he becomes involved in a series of cases.

The thesis of this provocative and potentially important book is the increasing threat of violence arising from renewed conflicts between countries and cultures that base their traditions on religious faith and dogma. This argument moves past the notion of ethnicity to examine the growing influence of a handful of major cultures--Western, Eastern Orthodox, Latin American, Islamic, Japanese, Chinese, Hindu, and African--in current struggles across the globe. Samuel P. Huntington, a political scientist at Harvard University and foreign policy aide to President Clinton, argues that policymakers should be mindful of this development when they interfere in other nations' affairs.

Huntington here extends the provocative thesis he laid out in a recent (and influential) Foreign Affairs essay: we should view the world not as bipolar, or as a collection of states, but as a set of seven or eight cultural "civilizations"?one in the West, several outside it?fated to link and conflict in terms of that civilizational identity. Thus, in sweeping but dry style, he makes several vital points: modernization does not mean Westernization; economic progress has come with a revival of religion; post-Cold War politics emphasize ethnic nationalism over ideology; the lack of leading "core states" hampers the growth of Latin America and the world of Islam. Most controversial will be Huntington's tough-minded view of Islam. Not only does he point out that Muslim countries are involved in far more intergroup violence than others, he argues that the West should worry not about Islamic fundamentalism but about Islam itself, "a different civilization whose people are convinced of the superiority of their culture and are obsessed with the inferiority of their power." While Huntington notes that the war in Bosnia hardened into an ethno-religious clash, he downplays the possibility that such splintering could have been avoided. Also, his fear of multiculturalism as a source of American weakness seems unconvincing and alarmist. Huntington directs the John M. Olin Institute for Strategic Studies at Harvard.

Must read to understand how the world works now. A little too long-winded. The original article by the other in "Foreign Affairs" is also available on Amazon, is a more concise read and covers all the main points equally memorably to this book.

This book was written more than 20 years ago. However, it is very timely because the results of the Clash of Civilizations and the things Huntington predicted are coming true today. This book provides useful insight to help you understand why various factions within civilization cannot get along.

Important, powerfully written work

Fascinating book, devastating and brilliant analysis. Having lived overseas for the past 14 years and witnessed firsthand the deleterious and disastrous effects of U.S. foreign policy, I found myself thinking as I read this that I wished every person in the State Department (for that matter, all bureaucrats) were required to read it and write a critical analysis. As least that would force them to engage with the arguments so powerfully presented by this writer. It is quite lengthy and detailed and extremely well-organized, yet imminently readable as well. Huntingdon's analysis is prescient and even prophetic. It has been several years since he wrote it (sad he's no longer around to add to it) and much of it is already being borne out. I haven't read any of the other reviews, but I'm quite sure many have sung its praises and given detailed examples from the text. My purpose here is simply to add my voice to the many who think this is a very important work indeed. I highly recommend it.

Not clearly written

Unlike some other books we've used, Prentice Hall does a horrible job of making the lessons clear. They seem to go out of their way to make the explanations as confusing as possible. We used this, primarily, as a course guide for homeschooling. Fortunately, my son did nearly all of his lessons online from a completely different source. This is from someone who aced every algebra and geometry course in school. As far as I'm concerned, it's only use was to make sure we covered everything we needed to. In that, it barely succeeded.

Complete Replacement for Western Texts

Got this as soon as it was out. This two volume green textbook is a complete replacement for the existing Western textbooks which are being currently followed, especially in developing countries. Reading through the chapters is very fluidic and interesting. Plenty of new stuff too. One of the 'must-have' academic texts for emergency physicians & emergency departments all over the world. Also recommended for those who are focused on international EM.

Superb textbook for India / SE Asia / developing natons

Finally a wonderful textbook written by local specialists particular for developing / developed world emergency medicine. I specially liked real Indian content, and colleagues who focused on history and examination / clinical reasoning, not just on latest tests / technology. It is very much a big book (2 volumes) but he covers everything medical and nursing and administration and alot more. It was easy to read and many good pictures. Perfect for India and SE Asia - I thank you. Now I recommend to all my staff.

In recent years his interests have centred on aspects of work-based learning and development within Buckinghamshire New University. Solid education about finances

All the companies in the world are in the business of selling products or services so that they can make money. The only way for them to prosper is to make people buy whatever it is that they are selling. It is not easy to say no to everything, but this book teaches reader how to protect their money and make better money decisions.

In this book, the authors teach readers about investments, college funding, credit cards, first and second homes, and financial planners. I think more people should be educated about their finances. I recommend this book.

A great overall guide to help get your accounts in order

This is a great overall guide to get your financial house in order. The car chapter is worth the price of the book alone--it helped me save big last weekend when I was renegoiating my lease agreement.
As a new dad, the chapters on handling family finance and insurance will prove invaluable. We often forget to revaluate our financial needs when we get caught up in a new arrival.
A great buy, a great addition to my libarary.

Everything you need to know about money...

As my father's health is beginning to decline, my wife and I recently found ourselves facing the difficult task of talking with my parents about their estate and finances. No other book helped us think about the questions we needed to ask and the way we needed to ask them like "Don't Mess with my Money." Not only did we discover that they needed a new insurance plan, but we also learned about ways to make smarter decisions about our OWN investments. I couldn't believe how many resources were packed into this one book, and would recommend it to readers of any age, no matter what their incomes are.

A promise that is fulfilled.

As a representational painter I find that a sound knowledge of perspective is of paramount importance and I cannot blame modernist art enough for the damage it has done to generations of painters by ignoring and teaching to ignore perspective .

Over the years I have collected an impressive number of books about perspective, from 15th century manuals to modern textbooks. All of them are fascinating but rather complex and tend to discourage the reader after a few chapters.

Norling's book, on the contrary, is beautifully simple without being superficial. It teaches the aspiring artist all the tricks with a simple language and without burdening him or her with exceedingly complicated rules and formulas. It is equally useful to the experienced artist that wants to refresh some difficult points.

An honest book that delivers all that it promises, that is how to make perspective easy.

A Must Read for Artists

This book has been around for generations and has been used and recommended by artists throughout that time. I found it very helpful. The principles of perspective have not changed, so the information is as accurate and applicable today as it was when the book was written.

200+ pages. Illustrations and diagrams are large when compared to the size of the pages. If I had my wish, the book would be a larger format... it is roughly 5.5 " x 8.5" which is an average paperback size, but for an art and instruction book I prefer a larger format.

This book is clear and easy to understand, great for the beginner and a nice refresher for those further along. I would consider it recommended reading for any artist. Lots of drawing books printed today have tiny sections on perspective, but I have found none as in-depth and informative as this book is. For a companion book, Figure Drawing For All It's Worth, by Andrew Loomis has a great section on drawing the human figure in perspective... and I would consider it another "must read" for artists. Does what it is supposed to, "perspective made easy"

Full disclaimer: I have not finished the book (I am about 40% through).

However, after having perspective "made easy" like the book advertised, I feel that it was appropriate to go ahead and review this book. As someone who is beginning to learn how to draw, this resource helped tremendously in understanding perspective. I really liked how he used certain tools and concepts to illustrate two-point perspective as well as how to draw the vanishing points a certain distance apart.

One thing I would have liked to see more is perhaps a bit more diagrams (especially to the homework-type assignments at the end of each section).

Cam Jansen, the girl with photographic memory!

My kindergartner has recently started reading chapter books, though she continues to read readers and these Cam Jansen readers are among her favorites. This book is a Level 2 book which is recommended for ages 5-8, Grades K-2. The story is divided into several chapters and is illustrated throughout which motivates young readers to develop an interest in the story.

Cam Jansen is an interesting character (personally I find her to be a refreshing character compared to the annoying Junie B. Jones character which my daughter likes). The reason for her nickname Cam is because she has an excellent memory like a camera (hence the shortened nickname "Cam"), and uses this talent to solve mysteries. Cam is usually accompanied by her good friends in solving mysteries relating to everyday things. Here, Cam and friends are happy to celebrate their class' 100 day of school, but when their pizza disappears, Cam resorts to her excellent memory to solve the mystery. The story is engaging and makes an excellent reader for young children.

fractured the suspension of disbelief

This story was a pretty good example of the Cam Jansen oeuvre, with a solid setup and denouement. The dialogue and attention to everyday details create a realistic tableau - however this workmanlike effort was marred by one inexplicable detail that renders the entire story somewhat unbelievable: why did the students cram three pizzas into one pizza box? Sent to retrieve three pizzas, who in their right minds would remove two of them from their boxes and stuff them all into the third box? This incongruous detail is rendered all the more jarring by the fact that it has no bearing on the plot - all it serves to do is fracture the suspension of disbelief.

Great book for young girls

My 5 year old daughter loves Cam Jansen! Cam is a smart girl who solves mysteries with her friend, Eric shelton. I like that the author has created a young, female character that is smart; such a good role model for a young female reader! These books are a little tedious to read aloud to your child, but the overall story is good. Got these to put in goody bags for my daughter's 5th birthday.

I Love It

This book was too cool. I am one of those people that work by picture. Read the instruction's later. And does this book have picture's. They are in color and magnified. It touches on almost all aspect's of sewing. The section I needed most was constructing a tailored notched collar. Thank You Singer! It was in this book. To go with this book I also bought The Vogue Sewing book. They work great together. Buy them both.

Grandma to the rescue!

I got a call one evening around the time of my grand daughter's 15th birthday. My son had gotten her a fancy Singer sewing machine and though they were reading the instruction manual, they stopped after threading the top of the machine, closed the book and he thought he was ready to sew. When it didn't work out, he called me and I choked back my chuckles and told him to open the manual back up and turn the page to thread the bobbin......he said, "The what????"
As I talked him through that part, I got on Amazon and searched for that trusty old Singer "How To Sew" book with the pen and ink illustrations that I had worn out in the 1960s when I was her age. I was delighted to find it is now this gorgeous photo illustrated guide. I ordered it fast and told them to just practice straight seams for 3 days and the mail would bring answers to all their questions. Does a grandma's heart good to be able to help so fast from a couple of hundred miles away! By the time I got there to visit in two weeks, she was already proficient enough for us to make her first complex garment! A dress with gathers, 6 darts several pleats, spaghetti straps and a cross over bodice!

Glad to Add it to My Library

I'm a self-taught/mom-taught sewist. The problem is that what I learned from Mom (no offense Mom) was one-off information about what I was sewing at the time.
Thanks to the Internet you can find all this information online but often only when you already know what you are looking for. This is what I'd expect to be required reading for a sewing class where you read the basics then do it in class on a project designed to accommodate the techniques you've learned.
The first night I got it and flipped through to find lots of new information I didn't know, some things I knew already and a handful of stuff I'll probably never need. I'm still quite glad to have this to reference when trying to wing a project an needing some technical advice! The photos feel very dated but the techniques have stood the test of time so there's no real complaining to do there!

Note: The book does not lay flat easily. Wish it did.

About the Author

Penelope J. E. Davies is Associate Professor at the University of Texas, Austin. She is a scholar of Greek and Roman art and architecture as well as a field archaeologist. She is author of Death and the Emperor: Roman Imperial Funerary Monuments from Augustus to Marcus Aurelius, winner of the Vasari Award.

Walter B. Denny is a Professor of Art History at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.� In addition to exhibition catalogues, his publications include books on Ottoman Turkish carpets, textiles, and ceramics, and articles on miniature painting, architecture and architectural decoration.

Frima Fox Hofrichter is Professor and former Chair of the History of Art and Design department at Pratt Institute.� She is author of Judith Leyster, A Dutch Artist in Holland’s Golden Age, which received CAA’s Millard Meiss Publication Fund Award.

Joseph Jacobs is an independent scholar, critic, and art historian of modern art in New York City.� He was the curator of modern art at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, Florida, director of the Oklahoma City Art Museum, and curator of American art at The Newark Museum, Newark, New Jersey.

Not to be mixed with bananas

This is the required book for my College Art History class. Well chosen pictures for each chapter. From what I can tell, there's very little difference between this and the 9th edition. WARNING: Do not leave a banana in your back pack with this book. I forgot I had one packed in there, and it got old and leaked moldy banana juice ALL over the bottom corner of this book. Completely killed the resale value. Now I feel sick every time I start to read it.

Excellent text w/ beautiful photos

I purchased this text for a History of Western Art class. It is well organized, containing significant information, lovely photos, chapter summaries, and a time-line chart for each chapter. It provides me exactly the information I was seeking and is written in a way I can easy absorb and retain the information presented.

On time, Great condition!

Very detailed book and useful for my art history class. Helped me understand the different art periods and had great pictures to go along with it. I mostly forgot everything now haha, but it was a very good book, great condition, and arrived on time!
