The Dark Flower, by John Galsworthy

The dark flower of thwarted passion lies at the heart of John Galsworthy’s compelling masterpiece. The Dark Flower tells of thirty troubled years in the life and loves of Mark Lennan. It was first published in 1913, portraying a world unwittingly at the end of an era. The wider social and political upheavals of the early twentieth century are intertwined with Lennan’s personal travails. In the first dozen pages, Galsworthy establishes his mastery of narrative and draws the reader into a plot which takes on a momentum of its own. It is hard to think of another novelist who explores a lover’s heart so poignantly and sustainedly.

Review

"To the reader with a critical instinct, the first impression made by Mr. Galsworthy's new novel, The Dark Flower, is that of keen delight at the sheer technical skill of it, the beautiful symmetry of its structure and its symbolism. It is only after enjoying this feature to the utmost that such lovers of fine artistry will begin to enjoy the equally fine interpretation of an almost universal phase of human life." —The Bookman (December, 1913)

By Tamsin Knox
Galsworthy is a wonderful writer. I am rating this edition which appears to have been printed from a Kindle file. There is no publisher, the page numbers are on bottom left of each page, the binding is cheap, there is no table of contents. The cover is attractive in order to sell the book on-line but this is not a published book, merely a print-out of text. Avoid this.

Dark and Deliciously Mean
By A. Caporaso
I'm glad I found this book. The characters are flawed and unlikeable, but it is written in a way that you want to know what happens to them, whether they will get what they deserve. In a way, it read like a study for the Forsythe Saga. Similar character development.

excellent Galsworthy novel
By D. Wolitzer
An outstanding effort by Galsworthy. Quite different from the Forsyte series and other novels of his that I've read. A bit like Hardy's Well Beloved, but more realistic. The 3-episode format was very effective, with some sparkling moments in each part. The free Kindle edition is a good one.

Hampered by a lack of direction
By E. Ambrose
Sadly, like its predecessor The Stowaway, The Shadowmask read like fan fiction. However, where the Stowaway read like halfway decent fanfic that had ok plot and character cohesion with the exception of the brick wall ending... Well, I guess something broke when this reader crashed into the end of the first book. It picks up exactly where the last book left off, causing me to once again curse a blue streak over the terrible transitioning. My swearing swiftly morphed into multiple facepalms. To save the remnants of my sanity, I decided to treat it with all the respect I would give to a fan fiction story. Suffice to say, it did not fare well.

Most of the first third of book book felt like a romp of "how many characters from The Halfling's Gem can we string together at once?" There didn't seem to be much in the way of plot or character development aside from a few minor points. Those were swiftly drowned out by ten chapters of running amok with next to no plan. It was not particularly interesting to slog though, particularly since it began to chip at my suspension of disbelief in the characters.

The storyline is best described as "silly knees bent running about advancing behavior." I would have wished for the plot to even itself out at some point, but it never really did until the last eight chapters or so. By then, it was starting to resemble swiss cheese. Melted swiss cheese at that. Perhaps the original idea was to show exactly how big a role luck played in Maimun's life, but my patience with the character thinned more and more as the story progressed. Most of the plot felt haphazard, as if situations were thrown at the characters with the sole purpose to see what would happen and little regard for solving the problems the characters had. The framing story was just as silly as it was the first time around, providing a frame but little else of interest. Also, before I get lost in a mire of ranting, the book has the same "I ran into a brick wall" feeling that The Stowaway had. I am pretty sure that this should have been a two book series.

Quite a bit of my frustration stemmed from the first person narrative voice this book adheres to. Don't get me wrong, I love it when it is done well and I find character studies fascinating... assuming there is something interesting to them to begin with. The first book had enough contemplation and story logic that the inner voice wasn't annoying nor did it feel particularly limiting. However, with the Shadowmask the action seemed to crowd out most things character related. Then time spent alone with Maimun's thoughts frequently turned to blaming other people for his misfortunes and misconceptions. This would be ok if he snapped and asked someone in the know about what was going on once in a while (and maybe advance the plot progression past randomness), but he seemed stuck in this "I know everything" phase that began to grate on me. I started to look forwards to Robillard and Duedermont attempting to apply some semblance of common sense and discipline to Maimun. For someone spending a lot of time on a ship, the kid sure had a fuzzy concept of how ship discipline works. Asbeel was an absent menace most of the time and was not fleshed out further. Maimun was his own worst enemy.

The other thing that bothered me with this style of first person voice was the use of description. I'm used to it being extremely visceral, regardless of what age level the book is geared for. It felt dry and empty, lacking of any but the most intense of emotions and even those seemed flat. I started to long for perspectives from the other characters because Maimun just wasn't holding my attention the way that a first person narration should. everyone else was more interesting and more active than he was.

There were aspects of the book that I did like. Robillard made me happy every time he showed up. I was completely sympathetic with Duedermont's take on Maimun, since it so closely resembled my own. I was a bit happier through the last few chapters of the book because at that point something plot-like had begun to creep back from wherever it had wandered off to. It was frustrating to finally feel like the narrative was moving again only to have the book end.

There wasn't much to this book and it really didn't seem to advance the overall plot as well as it could have. Coupled with the issues I had with the narration and the ugly transitioning between this book and the last, I can't say that I hold out much hope for the final installment.

Better continuation
By Robert "Dimndbangr" Hicks
The Shadowmask is the second book in the Stone of Tymora trilogy by R.A. and Geno Salvatore. The first book is The Stowaway and the third is The Sentinels due out in September 2010.

The Shadowmask begins right were The Stowaway left off finishing the cliff hanger from that book. It also continues the plot of Maimun telling his tale to a pirate who has captured him and through continuing the telling of his tale is keeping him alive. Once Maimun's predicament is resolved at the beginning, he continues on his journey now to be rid of the stone he possesses. An unfortunate incident happens and he aligns himself once again with Captain Deudermont and the Sea Sprite crew to chase pirates and retrieves what he has lost. Yet again there are special appearances by Drizzt and company and the reader is given a clue as to the timeline of this story which takes place during and after events in The Halfling's Gem from The Icewind Dale Trilogy. A couple subplots spring up in this one with Maimun's infatuation with a certain girl, the ambitions of a pirate captain, a woman wearing a shadowmask who can turn into a raven, and the mystery of an island.

This story moves much better than the first. There was more mystery involved and so help my interest much more. There wasn't as much of a need for character introductions so the story moved along nicely. Once again, this one is a fast read with short chapters and large print. This makes it ideal for a younger audience to read. The character development is done very well. A couple of the characters grow in ways that make sense and continues to define their growth. There is even a special appearance from one of the past characters, but to refrain from spoilers I won't say who. I feel this is a good bridge novel and I am looking forward to continuing this story. Geno Salvatore is doing a wonderful job and I am impressed with the improvement of his writing. The details and depictions of battles are just about as good as his fathers. It flows wonderfully and the pacing keeps the reader turning the pages.

Some criticisms:

1. Like the fist book, this one is written in the first person POV. I have never been a fan of this POV, but have make exceptions in the past and have read some good books utilizing this style, however, for this series, I believe a third person POV would have made the story much better.

2. Maimun's constant blaming of others or circumstances gets old. Instead of learning more about some situations it just continues to be the blame game over and over.

3. As with the first book, this one also has a cliff hanger ending, albeit, this time at least there is more of an actual ending and the cliff hanger leads more into the next book. At least this time he didn't end the book in the middle of a battle.

Some positives:

1. To me, the writing was much better and the action sequences are fantastic. The wording is not over done for the young adult audience it is geared towards.

2. Also set up for a younger audience is the length of the short chapters. It helps to five the YA reader a feeling of accomplishment while enjoying a well told story.

3. There is more of a mystery set up with this one and the way it plays out is excellent. Though there are still some things left out, I still enjoyed the read. I hope more is explained in the final book.
Overall, I had a good time reading this one. It was far better paced than the first and once again, the characters used from his father's books only enhanced the adventure and were not a focal point. Mr. Salvatore did a good job of making his characters the main part of the book. I really am looking forward to the conclusion in The Sentinels.

Happy reading

I regret buying and reading this!! It is Aweful Offal!!!
By Michael McDonnell
I forced myself to read this book after struggling through the first one. I could not make it through the entire book. It is awful and the main character is a whiny punk. I have read all of the Drizzt books that RA Salvatore had to offer. I am extremely disappointed in this book. I understand that he was allowing his son to take the lead on this, I just wish that he would have guided him more. The main character is horrible and throws temper tantrums throughout the series. I cannot believe the non reaction that the main character received from the supporting characters that were on loan from RA Salvatore's other books. I wish that Drizzt and his friends were not involved in this trash!!

I was forced to buy this for class. Yes it is a book, and yes it tells you about Natural Hazards and Disasters but you can get the previous version online for a fraction of the cost and the only real difference i saw was page numbers and the homework questions.

Knowledge and Power: The Information Theory of Capitalism and How It Is Revolutionizing Our World, by George Gilder

Just when our economy desperately needs a new direction, Ronald Reagan's most quoted living author - George Gilder - is back with an all-new paradigm-shifting theory of capitalism that will upturn conventional wisdom.

America's struggling economy needs a better philosophy than the college student's lament,"I can't be out of money, I still have checks in my checkbook!" We've tried a government spending spree, and we've learned it doesn't work. Now is the time to rededicate our country to the pursuit of free-market capitalism, before we're buried under a mound of debt and unfunded entitlements. But how do we navigate between government spending that's too big to sustain and financial institutions that are "too big to fail?" In Knowledge and Power, George Gilder proposes a bold new theory on how capitalism produces wealth and how our economy can regain its vitality and growth.

Gilder breaks away from the supply-side model of economics to present a new economic paradigm: the epic conflict between the knowledge of entrepreneurs on one side, the blunt power of government on the other. The knowledge of entrepreneurs and their freedom to share and use that knowledge are the sparks that light up the economy and set its gears in motion. The power of government to regulate, stifle, manipulate, subsidize, or suppress knowledge and ideas is the inertia that slows those gears down or keeps them from turning at all.

One of the twentieth century's defining economic minds has returned with a new philosophy to carry us into the twenty-first. Knowledge and Power is a must-read for fiscal conservatives, business owners, CEOs, investors, and anyone interested in propelling America's economy to future success.

Game-changing but flawed
By William R. Wiltschko
As other viewers have remarked, an information theory-based foundation for polical economy explained by this book is a big new idea. Revolutionary, game-changing, etc., all true. I have recommended the book to several friends, and will continue to do so, but the book is also flawed. The least of these flaws is that the core collection of important new ideas could have been explained in a magazine article. The book is divided into 25 chapters and three parts. Eleven chapters are in part one and are must reading. There are six interesting chapters in part two. All of part three can be skipped except the last chapter.

Gilder has integrated free markets and limited government under an information theory umbrella that credibly shows both theoretically and anecdotally how entrepreneurs drive economic and social progress. This is huge. He showed how more parts of the political-economic world fit together that I had formerly thought disparate.

Besides the length, a flaw of the book is that much of it is a series of extended book reviews. In many cases, I failed to see a compelling link to his information theory of political economy. Another flaw is the intellectual fights he picks with some unlikely targets. One of these fights is an attempt to resurrect "supply side" as a useful term. I agree with him on the substance, but see this as a re-branding loser.

A notable fight is with Nicholas Taleb, author of "Black Swan" and more recently "Anti-Fragile". Gilder doesn't acknowledge until the last two pages of the Taleb chapter (#18) that Taleb is on his side. Taleb has railed for years against over-dependence on Gaussian dogma, which is perfectly consistent with the acknowledgement of "surprises" that entrepreneurs produce. Gilder also fails to acknowledge that macro events, such as currency collapses, render moot for a short time any insider knowledge an investor might have about a company or industry. In the last two pages of the Black Swan chapter, Gilder seems to take back everything he said earlier in the chapter. If so, why did he leave in the chapter???

I have tremendous respect for Gilder. I actually met him once when I was at Intel. I respect his digging and digging to understand the economic ramifications of technology. While I think this book is a blockbuster of ideas, it is marred with misguided tangents and padding.

Get to the point
By J Montoya
I read the first chapter before buying the book and I also read a review in the paper. The topic sounded interesting, information theory and economics. Halfway through the book the author keeps referring to entropy and in relation to economics, dropping terms familiar to anyone that knows of the subjects. I do not see a convincing argument or explanation of his claims in the cover. I am not saying I disagree with the topic or points, I just dont see sufficient structure to support the claims made throughout the book. Its rare I start skimming through the book rather than reading page by page.

Ed Gein is perhaps one of the weirdest "psychos" of the 20th century, and his dastardly doings are unparalleled as Robert Gollman does a fairly decent job of bringing Gein's attrocities to light. The book's title America's Most Bizarre Murderer, lives up to it's name as we find Gein dancing in the moonlight with a self exhumed corpse, and the various human-made furniture pieces ie., human skin lamp shade and chair seat, skull bed posts, and bones galore. Gein served as a future role model for film makers Alfred Hitchcock (Psycho), and Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). The book also focuses on the disappearance and murder(butchering) of local hardware store owner Bernice Worden. Ole Ed keeps busy alright! Gollman's writing is a little slow at times, but does the job of bringing the gruesome details we true crime fans crave. Coincidentally, he was also the judge who presided over Gein's case. This is one true crime to have in your collection, especially if you love the unusual, and I do mean UNUSUAL!

OUT OF AMERICA'S HEARTLAND...
By lawyeraau
This is a book about Edward Gein, the mild mannered, Midwestern psychopath from Plainfield, Wisconsin who, in the nineteen fifties, would shock the nation with his gruesome crimes. Edward Gein would become the basis for the best selling book by Robert Bloch, "Psycho", as well as for the Hitchcock film of the same name. Accounts of Edward Gein's heinous crimes would also enter the consciousness of a young Tobe Hooper who, as an adult, would write and direct the classic cult film, "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre".

The author, who was the judge who presided over Edward Gein's trial, writes a cogent, factual account of the last grisly crime perpetrated by of Edward Gein, that of hardware store owner Bernice Worden, who was a widow of fifty-eight at the time of her murder. He also touches upon Edward Gein's other grisly crimes and bizarre practices, all of which shocked the nation at the time of their discovery.

The book contains many police reports and court transcripts. It details Edward Gein's "confession" to the Bernice Worden murder, as well as the author's judicial review of that statement. Ms. Worden's autopsy report is included in the book, as is Edward Gein's personal and medical history, as well as his psychiatric evaluation. It is clear the Edward Gein had an abnormal attachment to his deceased mother. It was an attachment that would manifest itself in unimaginable ways. It is almost hard to believe that such a diminutive, seemingly inoffensive man could be such a madman, but who but a madman would do what he did? Edward Gein, it was discovered, had turned his small farmhouse into a gruesome charnel house, replete with furnishings adorned with human flesh and bones.

The book also includes a chapter on the judicial decision that determined Edward Gein was insane and caused him to be committed to a hospital for the insane for an indeterminate period. Ten years later, Edward Gein was determined to be fit to stand trial for the murder of Bernice Worden, and the author became the presiding judge. One of the most curious aspects of the trial was Gein's request that his assigned counsel be the attorney who had presided over his sanity hearing years earlier. That attorney, however, had since become an assistant district attorney on the case against Gein. Notwithstanding that, he promptly resigned from his position as a state prosecutor and became Edward Gein's defense attorney.

The book contains transcripts from the trial, which makes for somewhat dry reading. There is some hair-raising testimony, however, on what was found at Gein's home, as well as on some of the ghoulish practices in which Gein engaged. The trial, which took nearly a year from start to finish, resulted in Gein's return to the hospital for the insane. The book contains an interview with the forensic psychiatrist at the hospital, as well as the hospital superintendent, in order to include information on Ed Gein's years at the hospital to which he was confined. The book also includes a post trial, hospital interview with Edward Gein himself. Moreover, the book contains an appendix in which the forensic psychiatrist contributes what he labels as "Gein humor", which is typical of "community reactions to a horrifying event.", and he engages in a brief analysis of this phenomenon.

This book is a pretty straightforward, although at times tedious, hodge-podge account by the author, which focuses more on the crime for which Edward Gein stood trial, rather than any in-depth summary analysis of Gein himself or his actions. Aficionados of true crime will find this book of some interest, as it is an insider's account of "the case of the century" and provides a birds-eye view into one of the most horrifying and bizarre crimes ever to be committed.

The book promises "eight pages of blood-curdling police photographs", and this is an absolute understatement. I have never before seen such shocking photographs included in a true crime book. They are the stuff of nightmares and serve to provide the reader with a brief, visual glimpse into the life of Edward Gein, a man with a secret hobby so depraved that it would shock the entire nation when it came to light. Lovers of true crime accounts will find something of interest in this insider's comprehensive foray into a crime committed by a seemingly innocuous man from America's heartland who ended up being so deviant from the norm.

truly frightening
By Patricia R. Andersen
This book is not for the weak of stomach or heart. It is the true account of the man who inspired Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho"
_and_ Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre". The book is written by the judge of the trial and contains transcripts of the trial.
It is a well written book but it is extremely disturbing to realize this was a real person, a man who was regarded as "the quiet type" before his horrible crimes were discovered.
If you are interested in true, bizarre crimes, this is an excellent book. My advice is to make sure you have some lighter reading before your bedtime or you could very well have nightmares from this book. I know I _did_ and I don't consider myself as one who frightens easily. But the sheer catalog of atrocities, done by a real person on real people is truly disturbing.
